Lomíček, Jan ; Štaif, Jiří (advisor) ; Jančík, Drahomír (referee) ; Křesťan, Jiří (referee)
Jan Lomíček Doctoral thesis External and internal factors of Soviet Union image creation in interwar Czechoslovakia Abstract The doctoral thesis uses both Czechoslovak and foreign archival sources and period sovietica to analyse the most relevant inner and outer factors influencing the creation of a positive image of the Soviet Union in the eyes of interwar Czechoslovak public. On one hand, there were various mechanisms used by the Soviet propaganda. Here we can mention propagandist image of the USSR which was created according to Czechoslovak sympathizers' needs - pictorial periodicals, foreign broadcasting meeting listeners' demands etc. At the same time, the Czechoslovak public adopted the identical categories that were used by the Soviet side to describe the reality, such as work - education - equality - emancipation - freedom - new versus old - civilization - development - growth. Besides common propagandist means the USSR used also the foreigners' visits to confirm its idealized image. The approach to Czechoslovak citizens was improved after the Soviet travel agency Inturist had been launched. This agency should take care of the foreign visitors. However, the interwar travels to the USSR were not too common and frequent, which was caused both by the Soviet byrocracy and costs of such trips. The...
The Genealogy of the Plzeň Revolt on June 1, 1953: An Analysis of Public Collective Protests of the Plzeň City Population in the Years 1948-1953
Šlouf, Jakub ; Randák, Jan (advisor) ; Kopeček, Michal (referee) ; Křesťan, Jiří (referee)
The presented dissertation thesis analyzes one of the largest protests of the Czechoslovak Stalinism-era - the Plze revolt against the currency reform in June 1953. From a conceptual perspective, the work draws on the theory of the so-called new social movements. Therefore it sets the well-known Plze incident into the context of previous protest actions that occurred in the Plze region in the course of the years 1948-1953. This method enables the author to chart the development of several varied protest cultures which had been employed in particular parts of society in Western Bohemia on a long term basis and which inspired the inception and the course of the Plze revolt in the year 1953. This way the work offers not only a considerably more precise critical description of the June protests but also their cultural genealogy. By the means of this genealogy the author reveals the structure of the main social movements that took part in the revolt and an associated complex of social conflicts that caused the protests. There were in particular the following three: a socially-motivated strike movement of industrial blue-collars, a pro-western movement of both student and blue-collar youth and a latent tension within the communist party which was becoming evident through a passive resistance of its rank...

Especially membership in the Gymnastic Union Sokol, whose branch was also active in Benešov, was very prestigious. Along with sport and support of national idea it looked after an education of their members and contributed to a cultural life of the town; it set up its own library and a theatre department as well as it ran a cinema in the local Sokol house. The same supraregional overlap had the Municipal volunteer fire brigade in Benešov. Its creation and functioning were led by practical reasons, but its sphere of activity wasn't limited only on fire extinguishing in the town and its neighbourhood. The fire fighters regularly cooperated with other fire squads in the republic, took part in various celebrations and meetings as well as in cultural life in Benešov, though, in this...
