Press Act no. 81/1966 and its influence on the events of the Prague Spring
Henychová, Eliška ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
Thesis deals with the Press Act no. 81/1966 Coll., on periodical press and other mass media and its influence on the events of the Prague Spring reform in 1968. I wanted to highlight how important role the press act and its legalization of censorship of the press and other mass media played in the process of democratization of the communist regime. Institutionalized censorship became the impetus for sharpening criticism of the ruling Communist Party. After many years when censorship interventions were carried out illegally, it was possible to lawfully defend against this tool of communist managing, controlling and restricting freedom of expression and to demand its abolition. Very strongly the demand for abolition censorship came after IV. congress of the Union of Czechoslovak Writers. Part of the reform-minded senior officials of the Communist Party which supported the democratization of the system, advocated the attainment of freedom of expression, because they knew that a free media can most effectively contribute to the reform ideas with which they identify. Achieving abolition of censorship then really brought into media content quite open criticism of the existing socio situation in the country and also an appeal that it is necessary to reform it. Media created political pressure and acted as...
Richard Hoggert's personality and work
Koutná, Lucie ; Jirák, Jan (advisor) ; Köpplová, Barbara (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive view on the person and work of Richard Hoggart, with emphasis on his contribution to media studies. It should at least partially fill the gap in Czech environment, because until this point only minimum attention had been paid to Hoggart. This paper interprets Hoggart's view of the influence of media on society, outlines the changes in society caused by the influence of mass media, examines mass and popular culture and the differences between them. Special attention is devoted to television broadcasting, from its beginnings in the UK, the debates over its meaning, to its importance and the influence of television production on the late twentieth century society, all primarily with regards to Hoggart's thoughts. This thesis provides an excursion into the working class of the first quarter of the twentieth century and into Hoggart's childhood, through his probably most important work, The Uses of Literacy (1957). It also briefly investigates Hoggart's participation in the Pilkington Committee and assesses his role of a defence witness in the trial concerning the book Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Firstly, the historical development of the magazine is introduced. Moreover, the situation of the mass media in the country during this time period is evaluated. Furthermore, the emphasis is put on the two core personalities of the magazine Ferdinand Peroutka and Milena Jesenska. Secondly, crucial articles of the magazine are analysed. For the purposes of this thesis articles from the periods of 'Second Republic' and 'Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia' were used. The thesis reflects the work of 'Pritomnost' until its suspension. In its analyses of the articles this thesis evaluates the main focus of the magazine, views of the editorial board and the atmosphere of the time. Quotations of these articles have been contextualised to accurately represent the historical events and options given to the editors by the censorship. Social and political role of the revue parliament (1921-1936) and its position on the media market during the first republic in Czechoslovakia
Bajerová, Markéta ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Sekera, Martin (referee)
The Diploma Thesis named Social and Political Role of the Revue Parliament (1921-1936) and its Position on the Media Market during the First Republic in Czechoslovakia describes the role of the revue Parliament on the media market in the First Republic in Czechoslovakia. It introduces the period of the First Republic as time of alignment and stabilization of the new country based on democratic principles which were mirrored also in the then media creation. That was characterized by extensive diversity although having been subject to a censorship - in which numerous journals with various specializations and ideological values were finding their place. The Parliament, which I focused on, was significant by being published in the homonymous institution and specialized primarily in sociopolitical topics. It is obvious from its content that it set itself the task to defend an independent position of the republic and to introduce the public to its law and political culture. Whereas the lack of materials about the journal I decided to define it completely. Primarily I used the journal itself and archival materials of the National Archives. I focused on figures who were creating this journal, on the frequence of its publishing, organization and financial matters and especially on the analysis of its...

Marešová, Veronika ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Knapík, Jiří (referee)
This diploma thesis, Osvobozený Našinec from 1945 to 1948, aims to analyze the aforementioned daily newspaper in the selected period. Osvobozený Našinec was a regional catholic daily newspaper published in Olomouc with a tradition of over 80 years. Despite the fact that this newspaper had in its lifetime many unpleasant influences, the communist takeover in February 1948 meant the definitive end of this newspaper. Osvobozený Našinec served mostly as a source of local information about life in Olomouc and until now hasn't been a subject of any deeper analysis. Firstly, the work deals with the development of newspaper from its establishment up until 1941 when publishing was stopped during the war. Osvobozený Našinec was published under the Czechoslovakian Popular Party after the Second World War and that is why part of the second chapter is devoted to this party and its development. The following chapter describes the situation in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War and the changes it brought in all aspects of life with regard to the press, the Olomouc region and the Czechoslovakian Popular Party. The fourth chapter deals with Osvobozený Našinec itself. Alongside general characteristics of the newspaper there is a focus on the influence of Czechoslovakian Popular Party on the newspaper, on its...

Reindlová, Nikola ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Krejcar, Robert (referee)
The main aim of my diploma thesis is to capture the social atmosphere on the pages of periodicals in the Liberec region over the last few months before the secession of the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia in the Munich Agreement. It was a predominantly German populated region and I wonder how local Czech minority recognize tense period in 1938. For this reason I chose the only Czech written newspapers in Liberec at this period - North-Bohemian Daily. Start of the work is devoted to a brief recapitulation of the historical development of Liberec. And next charter deals with Czech-German relations because this topic is not only a question of the First Republic but it is a coexistence lasting few centuries and we could classify the events of 1938 in the correct context. In the next part I have devoted Nort-Bohemian Daily, its publishers, printers, graphic form, editorial and content characteristics. This is followed by a quantitative content analysis in the last stage of existence of newspapers, ie from January to October 1938. I was interested what topics editorial gave space, who created the texts as they were long and to which columns they were sorted. I also examined by genres newspaper formed and whether journalists engaged in regional, national or international events . At the conclusion chapter...
