Organic Farming through the eyes of farmers
Zagata, Lukáš ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Lošťák, Michal (referee)
Current popularity of organic farming is partly based on idealized picture about farming practices and its (organic) products. The goal of this thesis is to find out how the participating farmers look at their own practices, and by this to offer a comparison to what extent the subjective viewpoints of farmers correspond with notions and positive expectation of official policy actors and public. Empirical study uses a less known research tool called Q methodology, which is focused on identification of ideal-type approaches of engaged actors. Data was gathered with the use of semistandardized interviews with Czech organic farmers. Analysis pointed out three factors, which were interpreted as three existing perspectives among organic farmers. The content of each one formed a basis for their names - organic farming (1) as a way of life, (2) as a livelihood and (3) as a production of food of alternative quality. Each viewpoint puts emphasis on different elements and in a specific way forms (constructs) basic aim of organic farming. The identified classification contributes to a theoretical discussion about a nature of current organic agriculture and its position in contemporary modern society. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Community forms of ecologically-friendly life in individualized society
Losenický, Jan ; Tuček, Milan (advisor) ; Kabele, Jiří (referee)
The thesis "Community forms of ecologically-friendly life in individualized society" deals with contemporary intentional eco-communities that are, mostly as ecovillages and cohousings, connected with the reneissance of the community movement in Western society in the nineties of the 20th century. Utilizing G. Simmel's concept of quantitative and qualitative individualism, it investigates to what extent is the existence and form of intentional eco-communities influenced by the process of individualization. The motivations of initiators and of the members of eco-communities, the question of privacy and the engagement in neighbourhood relationships and into public life are investigated in more detail. Third part of the work offers a description of examples of intentional eco-communities in Czech Republic and it also describes community projects that are related to this topic.
Discoursive re/production of inequalities in decision making: The case of Pankrácká pláň
Šamánek, Jan ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Kabele, Jiří (referee)
The diploma thesis links theoretical presumptions about new inequalities that are typical for late capitalist societies and occur between groups defined by different priority of accumulation of economic capital, to an analysis of particular social environment. The author adopts radical democratic standpoint and uses the approach of critical discoursive analysis to debunk instruments of reproduction of these inequalities that are present in mass media discourse concerned with decision making about public spaces. The particular area of interest is massmedial discourse concerned with the case of development of Pankrácká pláň in Prague. The analysis shows that typical discoursive phenomena are present in analyzed articles. These phenomena help to discoursively limit the recognition of identities of groups that are not primarily oriented towards accumulation of economic capital and to advantage primarily economically oriented groups in decision making within given legal community. The author uses results of the analysis to illustrate the contrariety between the hegemony of economic reductionist discourse and requirements of society based on radical democratic deliberative principles.
Membership in the Communist Party in the 21th Century
Struha, Michal ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
In this paper I tried to explain the relation of the basic organization of the Czech and Moravian Communist Party (KSCM) in the town Dubí to its party and to define the member identification on the ground of the heuristic research method and of the position analysis of the KSCM in the Czech political system both in the level of Czech Parliament and in the level of the local government. The idea and program identification with its party, interests and intents to govern their town, and existence of informal social relations in the local party framed the path on the way o f exploration why the current members still remain in the KSCM party although this party is constantly stigmatized. I even attempt to explain the evolution changes of the KSCM party according to its member basis change and its possible results in the next years. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
IN ATTENDANCE OF PUBLIC..analysis of public discussion about the transport policy of city district Prague 6
Ptáčková, Kateřina ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Illner, Michal (referee)
Using the instruments of discourse analysis these master theses intend to explore, what is the core of the transport policy discussion in Prague, what are the main sources and discourses forming it. The discussion on the transport policy in one of the Prague city district's is used not only for the analysis of the transport base of the discussion but also as the illustration of forming the public discussion in general. The analysis focuses on the roles of two main groups of collective actors of public decision-making - elected politicians (local authority) and NGOs. Discourse is in analysis understood in the Foucault's view as the practices which form the objects of which they speak and do not speak. With reference to Fairclough it concentrates also on the specific role of individual actors. The analysis indicates that the main sources of the good transport solution are their suitable transport funcioning, evironmental assets and public support. First two sources are discussed in the first part of the thesis. The public support source is discused in the second part of analysis, dealing with the democratic discourse. The democratic discourse is identified as the framing discourse of the public discussion in general. Public participation and deliberation are considered both by politicians and NGOs to be...

It deals the analysis of questions of the terrorism itself as well as the anti-terrorist measures and their impacts on the democracy, human rights and freedoms. In the first part, the problems and questions of the terrorism itself is handled and its contemporary images and interpretations of the origins are discussed. Later, the risks connected with the terrorism are mentioned with the stress of its societal fear. The analysis of the anti-terrorist measures follows the line in the inhabitants security. In the second part of the thesis, there is the presentation of the results of the survey. The research with the university students in the Czech Republic focuses the legitimacy of the implemented programs and the reflections of evens connected with the problems of the terrorist threats. The author finds the result, that the legitimacy depends on the type of a particular anti-terrorist program. The university students tend to accept the "pasive" measures (like the control and camera in the underground, phone monitoring) and the programs of the "democracy export". On the contrary, the students...
Everyday police: Norms in the turmoil of police practice
Tošovský, Michal ; Hájek, Martin (advisor) ; Kabele, Jiří (referee)
Everyday police: norms in the turmoil o f police practice Based on the interviews with police officers from the local police stations of one of the Czech police's districts the author discusses their ability to handle their everyday practice. It is viewed under two sets of effects. The first set consists of three levels of written legal obligations - the constitutional laws defining the basic values of social structure and state system, laws which govern police functions and objectives and internal norms of the police organization specifying their operation. The use of legal norms is penetrated by five sociological dimensions - the ethical and moral values expressed within the written norms (how the police mean their practice); the exact terms of the written norms (how the police should do their practice); the police officers' performance requirements (how the police must do it); the police officers' experience based best practice (how the police would like to do it) and the ability to meet all those requirements (how the police really do it). After framing the analysis, the current knowledge about police is discussed. In the foreign literature we can find two basic fashions of the police performance. The first one sees police practice as reactive, based on crime control and crime-fighting police...
The case of weirs: Media discourse analysis
Vaňhalová, Adéla ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Vodáková, Alena (referee)
The author was concerned with the media discourse of the theme of weirs on the river Labe in newspapers MF Dnes and Ústecký deník during the period of ten years. The used methods were quantitative and qualitative content analyses. Emphasis was placed on the types of arguments used in the discourse and also on the means of argumentation [Schopenhauer 1991, Weston 2001]. Analysis discovered two basic kinds of discourse: expert and emotional. To both of these discourses were linked special kinds of means of argumentation. The expert discourse was constructed as a pure and fair argument. The emotional discourse was constructed as an insidious argument. The main conclusion derived from the analysis was about the game frames [Goffman 1999] of two sides in discourse: advocates and opponents of the weirs. To the advocates was ascribed expert economic discourse which created their dominant game frame. The advocates persuade the public about their truth through economic discourse. The opponents were first constructed as dominant in the game frame of expert ecological discourse. During time their ecological game frame was redefined by the advocates and lost its persuading power. The opponents found new game frame: "petition" political discourse. "Petition" political discourse is till now the dominant game frame of the...
Whom does the European ombudsman help?
Kuberová, Lucie ; Kabele, Jiří (advisor) ; Balon, Jan (referee)
The European Ombudsman works as one of the institutionalized mechanisms of complaining within the EU. The thesis deals with certain aspects of an inherent duality of this institution in three different levels. First, the throughout narrative motive of ombudsman as a "potent patron of weak individuals" is being analysed. The element of an intense protection seems to be in contrast with throughout limited means ombudsman usualy dispones of. Second, we might view an assertion of ombudsmen into the continental legal system as kind of a comeback of a long past system of equity - "natural equity" so that we see it as a meet of certain element of an Anglo-Saxon legal system with the continental one. The formal system of codified law comes to its limits with the dynamic development of western societies; the ombudsman should serve as kind of "safety-fuse" against its imperfections. Last but not least, the institution of the European Ombudsman was proposed to approximate the european administration to the citizens of Europe. The interference of such a "promotional" role with the "control" one works in favor of a potential role-conflict, which has to be ward off by ombudsman day by day. In the last section we show how the institution deals with such conditions. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
