A four-part song of modern man. Czech translations of Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself"

This thesis analyzes Czech translations of Walt Whitman's poetry, especially of his central poem, Song oj Myself. The main aim of the paper is to provide translation analyses of all four complete Czech translations. Some fragmentary translations are also mentioned, and a basic overview of Czech secondary literature on Whitman's work is provided. The main body of the thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter One describes Whitman's life and work in the context of his time, as portrayed in secondary literature. lt concentrates on features reflected in the text of Song oj Myself, including literary influences and censorship that influenced the work. It also sets out a hypothesis of possible censorship influences on the single translations. Chapter One continues with a detailed analysis of mam structural features of Whitman's poetry, as reflected in Song oj Myself. The features are contextualized with the main literary theories of the time and with Whitman's individua! aesthetics. The structural features are sorted according to linguistic levels they belong to. V roce 1983 se v kanadském Torontu při operním představení poprvé nad jevištěm objevily titulky s překladem zpívaného textu. Titulkování se ujalo a postupně rozšířilo do operních domů celého světa. Dnes si už bez nich divák návštěvu opery ani nedokáže představit. Spolu s novou technologií vznikl i nový typ překladatelské činnosti, velice vyhraněné a náročné. Snad vzhledem k relativní novosti tohoto jevu anebo proto, že k umění neodmyslitelně patří pluralita názorů a přístupů, je překlad operních titulků doposud disciplínou poměrně neustálenou, s řadou argumentů pro i proti, ale i odlišných přístupů k samotným překladatelským operacím. Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl zmapovat historický vývoj a současný stav operního titulkování v České republice i v zahraničí z hlediska uměleckého, společenského i technologického a nahlédnout překlad operních titulků jak prizmatem vědeckých oborů lingvistických a translatologických, tak z hlediska hudební vědy i konkrétní divadelní praxe. Commented translation: Learning to live together

The aim of this thesis is to provide a translation of a section from Philippe Legrain's lmmigrants: Your Country Needs Them and a commentary of the translation. The commentary contains four parts. The first part is a translation analysis, which consists of an analysis of extratextual and intratextual factors and describes the specific qualities of the source text. The second part provides a typology of translation problems, describing linguistic and cultural non-equivalence and defending the translator's solutions. The third part is a typology of shifts occuring in the translation. The commentary is concluded by the description of the translation method.
Interpersonal dynamics in dubbing of TV series: dominance, verbal and non-verbal action of characters

So far the filmic dialogue and its translation have been researched mainly from the perspective of the translator of the script, this approach being justified by the claim that the translator cannot manipulate any other but the verbal code. The nature of the audiovisual text, whether in its original or dubbed version, is, nevertheless, explicitly multimodal, and its complex meaning is coded on multiple level via diverse means. An important factor which makes audiovisual research complicated is the fact that the audiovisual text is essentially a teamwork determined by collaboration of many different people in different stages of its production. This thesis attempts to approach the audiovisual text of as a whole, that is, in the form it is presented to the audience. The opening part identifies the specifities of audiovisual text and its dubbing, including its multidimensionality, role and function of its dialogue, process of dubbing production and constraints of the contemporary Czech dubbing market. What follows is a contrastive analysis of an opening scene of The X-Files Pilot in its English and Czech dubbed versions with respect to the sequential build-up of the interpersonal dynamics in both versions. Sue Miller's novels in Czech translations

The thesis deals with existing Czech translations of Sue Miller' s novels and explores the non/transferability of their feature of having the potential to become a bestseller into Czech culture. It analyzes the translation of the novel The Good Mother by Ilona Kořánová and Marcela Haspeklová published in 1995, the translation of the chapter Four from the novel The Good Mother by Eva Věšínová published in the magazíne Iniciály in 1992 and the unpublished translation of the novel F amily Pic tur es by Vladimíra Žáková from 1996. Sue Miller's first novel The Good Mother, first published in 1986, was a great success with US readers, and also her following novels Family Pictures, For Love and While I Was Gone became bestsellers in the USA. However, Sue Miller is almost unknown among Czech readers. The chapter Two briefly describes Sue Miller's life and works, and in the chapter Three, Sue Miller's works are set into the social and cultural context ofthe USA in the second half of the twentieth century. Oscar Wilde's fairy tales in three Czech translations

This thesis analyzes three Czech translations of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales from the critical perspective of a contemporary reader, focusing on translations currently available on the Czech market. It compares the 1981 translation by Jiří Zdeněk Novák (published in 2007 as an audiobook), the 1985 translation by Radoslav Nenadál (republished in 2006) and the latest, 1994 translation by Markéta Cukrová (newly published in 2007). The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part sets the targets of the dissertation and provides an important background for the second part: it briefly summarizes relevant research carried out to date, introduces Oscar Wilde's life and literary career and considers the fairy tale genre in general, before discussing in more detail Wilde's own fairy tales, setting them in the context of the fairy-tale work of other Victorian writers and pointing out the characteristic feature and function of fairy stories in that period - social criticism. The world of Harry Potter translated into Czech and Slovak

This study provides a description of the translation techniques applied to the translation of culturally significant phenomena in the Harry Potter series into Czech and Slovak. The analysis extends to the first three boo ks of the Harry Potter series by British author J. K. Rowling and their translations into Czech and Slovak. The theoretical framework is derived from the views of Finnish scholar R. Oittinen (2000) on the translation of children's literature; the translation techniques used to analyze the translations are taken from Molina&Albir (2002). Chapter 1 discusses Harry Potter from the point of view of literary theory. It reviews the different traditions (Anglo-American, Czech, Slovak) in defining and describing fantasy literature and fantasy for children. In the Czech and Slovak literary contexts, there is a tendency to view works similar to Harry Potter as fairy tales with fantastic elements. Translation criticism in Czech periodicals 1960-2006 with focus on prose and poetry translated

The thesis looks into the status of Czech translation criticism in the period from the 1960s until the year 2005. Research is based on articles evaluating pro se and poetry translations from English that appeared in Czech literary journals in the period under discussion. In addition, the thesis gathers together relevant findings of Czech and Slovak translation studies, and particular contributions to translation 'meta-criticism' (i.e. criticisms of trans lati on criticism). Throughout the period under examination, critiques of prose and poetry translations from English appeared in around twenty literary joumals. In chapter 2, these periodicals are described in terms of their interest in translation issues and translation criticism in particular. Chapter 3 gives an account of the development of translation criticism with focus on the relevant critiques and shows the changes that the frequency and style of translation criticism underwent. For this purpose, critical articles are divided into four categories according to the length and profundity of the analyses employed.
