The Hidden Avant-Garde. Czech Avant-Garde Fiction between Individualism and Collectivism

in English This work focuses on the Czech afterwar avant-garde and its fiction in the wider European context. The main goal of our writing was diversifying literary historical field by integrating genre of short story and its authors into the interpretive frame of the prepoetistic avant-garde. We could intrude a canonic picture of the Czech avant-garde by enriching the interpretive frame of the new genre (short story) and new, often hardly known or forgotten, writers. Last but not least by doing so we were able to questioned and problematized basic oppositions such as expressionism × avant-garde, and mainly individualism × collectivism. We introduce the principal opposition individualism × collectivism, which in our opinion, organizes afterwar literary discourse, as a main connecting line between Czech avant-garde art and European art (collective and one of its manifestation - crowd, as one of the main themes of modernism and avant-garde). We interpretate beyond this scope the fictions of French unanimism as the main inspiration of the Czech afterwar avan-garde and its (collective) fiction as well.

PhDr. Alena Míšková, Ph.D. ABSTRACT: This dissertation describes the organisation and the influence of censorship in the theater during the time of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, and is based on the political, administrative and cultural history of the given period. The purpose of the work isn't only to describe the structure of censorship in the theater, but also to relate its significance to the world of theater and its repertoire using concrete examples of Czech theater in Prague. As a result of interpreting censored theater scripts performed during the protectorate period of Prague, the work contains detailed characteristic and thematic categorization of the most frequent expurgations. Through the use of theater memoirs and police records, the work shows the censorship's influence on the everyday history of Prague theater. The procedure of censorship used at this time reveals the main tendency of cultural policy, the categorization of expurgations reflects the everyday history of the protectorate. Lars von Trier in Czech Theatres: stage adaptations and their cinematographic prototypes

This thesis concentrates on the phenomenon of theatre adaptation of films in context of czech contemporary theatre. It's goal is - on examples of theatre transcriptions of Lars von Trier's films - to capture and describe difficult process of adaptation, which is wageing during the transformation of films and film texts into their theatre versions. During the process of analyses, we will try to trace not only the concrete transfigurations, but to name possible approaches and techniques revelating during the act of adaptation.

Plays by Václav Vlček

This diploma thesis deals with Václav Vlček, a Czech prominent author of the second half of the 19th century (1839-1908), and his dramatic production. The introduction contains the information concerning the author himself, his social status, and Czech cultural life of that time. The attention is paid to two most interesting art disputes he was in with the forthcoming young modernist generation. Then we will primarily focus on his dramatic production, his historical tragedies, comedies and psychological plays. We will try to analyse common features in his drama, focusing mainly on his heroines modelled on the basis of Romantic heroines, and the characters of rulers who are depicted as saints and therefore lose all their dramatic nature due to their faultlessness. Next chapter is devoted to a partial reconstruction of the form of Vlček's plays performed in the Prozatímní divadlo (The Prague Provisional Theatre) and the National Theatre. Rare extant material, especially the two stage books and a prompt book, will be used. The chapter also describes criticism of that time, mainly the two most significant critics, Jan Neruda and Josef Durdík. Karel Krejčí's Comparative Approaches in his Understanding of Czech and Polish Literature

The thesis documents and interprets the conflict between the literary discourses of the time on the one hand, and the specific approach of Karel Krejčí (1904-1979), comparatist, Slavist and Czech studies scholar, on the other hand. Based on the Krejčí's studies on literary history and comparative literature, as well as his participation in the methodological debates of his time, the thesis analyses the impact of this conflict on the author's literary theory method, and his work of a literary historian and comparatist in general. The analysis is based on the ambiguous reception of Krejčí's scientific work: while he is recognised as a great personality in the field of Slavic studies, he is considered an outsider in the general context of Czech literary science. The thesis describes how the author, with his methodological approach, was in opposition to the prevailing trend. As a Slavic studies scholar he criticised the 'influence science' and positivist methods employed in the field. In the period between the two world wars he inclined towards the sociology of literature, although this discipline did not become popular. Use of Autobiographical Motifs in Works of Edgar Dutka, Eliška Vlasáková and Antonín Bajaja

The work confronts prosaic pieces with noticeable autobiographical features. It deals namely with works of Edgar Dutka, Eliška Vlasáková and Antonín Bajaja. It was not a coincidence to choose right these three Czech authors. They have quite a few features in common. They all belong to the same generation. They are born in the 40's of the 20th century, so they have spent an essential part of their lives (childhood, adolescence and substantial part of their working age) in the second half of the 20th century - in the time of political convulsions and social changes. A childhood spent during this period has become their common literary theme. They all make their memories a literary piece. Each of them does it in a different way and with a different amount of accuracy. Their inspiration comes from their real life, from their memories. The next common feature of these three authors is that they all wrote some of their texts without a vision to make them public. They wrote them for themselves. Book editions were carried out after the year 2000. Last but not least mutual fact is that all of these three authors have been nominated for a prestigious literary price. Detective stories in the sixties in Czech literature

Sixties was a special period in the history of Czech literature, because during these years popular literature (especially the detective stories) was written as an artistic literature. During the sixties a lot of detective novels with artistic value were written. In the past (especially during the fifties), vacation literature was considered bad. In the first half of the sixties mainly socialist detective stories were written. There were important political opinions of the author. Socialist authors celebrated police work. In the late sixties detective stories under the Anglo-Saxon tradition were written. For authors, it was important to respect the rules of writing crime fiction. They thought that crime novels people read just for fun. At the end of the sixties detective stories have never had such a good position in the literature. The Mašín Myth. Ideologies in Czech Literature and Culture since the Second Half of the 20th century until the Present Day

This dissertation analyses narratives of the Mašín brothers and their father, Josef Mašín senior. The Mašín brothers established what they called 'a resistance group' against the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, which between 1951 and 1952 killed three people. The brothers, alongside the other member of the group, Milan Paumer, escaped from the country in 1953, heading for the Western sectors of Berlin. Despite more than 20,000 East German and Soviet troops hunting them, the group reached West Berlin safely. Later, the brothers went to the USA where they joined the U.S. army. The dissertation analyzes a whole range of discourses including newspaper articles, historical papers, books, detective stories, novels, memoirs and also one episode of the Czechoslovak television series, Třicet případů majora Zemana ('Major Zeman's Thirty Cases'), entitled Strach ('Fear'), from 1975. The dissertation is conceptually embedded in cultural studies and critical theory. Drawing on Roland Barthesʼs work on mythologies, Hayden Whiteʼs theory of history and Slavoj Žižekʼs theory of ideology, the dissertation considers the relationship of the Mašín brothersʼ narrative representations with respect to the dominant ideology of the time.
