Space Reinhabited: Conception of Space in Martin Heidegger's Work and His Influence on the Theory of Architecture in the 2nd Half of the 20th Century
Holeček, Josef ; Švec, Ondřej (advisor) ; Petříček, Miroslav (referee)
5 Abstract This bachelor's thesis attempts to compare and explain the different concepts of spatiality in Martin Heidegger's work. Following Heidegger's 1969 seminar in Le Thor, this thesis builds on his retrospective division of his work, centred around being. First, he askes about the meaning, then about the truth and finally about the place of being. In this thesis, the comparison of different approaches to spatiality in different periods of Heidegger's life is emphasized as well as his rejection of the previous Newtonian, Galilean and Cartesian approaches. This rejection is gradually taking place since Being and Time and it is clear that Heidegger's concept of spatiality is fairly consistent, despite the changing terminology. It is also pointed out that his phenomenological approach is ground-breaking in some respects, mainly because of the expressions and terms he uses in his language. This means that his approach is almost unparalleled as far western physics and metaphysics are concerned, making Heidegger more influential even outside the field of philosophy, as is demonstrated by the architectural theory in which his concept of spatiality is still visible today. Keywords: Heidegger, world, space, spatiality, being-in-the-world, place, fourfold, region, Ortschaft, topology, language, architecture,...
Roman imports in South Asia
Holeček, Jiří ; Stančo, Ladislav (advisor) ; Bouzek, Jan (referee)
- Jiri Holecek - Roman imports in South Asia Diploma thesis sums up the development of the maritime trade between the Mediterranean, especially Rome, and South Asia, especially India, in the time period between the first century BC and the fourth century CE. Emphasis is put mostly on the archeological proof of the trade in the both directions, such as coins or traded goods, and their relevance and conclusiveness. Furthermore, the works of ancient historians are used to obtain more precise context in the terms of geography and economy. Thesis will compare the development of the maritime trade and the trade using the overland routes, especially so-called Silk Road. In conclussion, the thesis summarizes relevant proofs, and with their help defines the extent of the influence of the Mediterranean in South Asia and compare it with the influence of the overland routes, and finally describes the reasons of this economical development.
Silk road: contacts between China and western world
Holeček, Jiří ; Stančo, Ladislav (advisor) ; Bouzek, Jan (referee)
This work will attempt to sum up developement of the trade relations between China and western world, especially Rome, in period between 3. century BC and 3. century AD, with accent on the archaeological finds documenting types of traded commodities and luxurious wares on so-called Silk Road and role of merchant middlemen (Parthians, Kushans). Historical sources will be used to support relevancy of the material, especially in the case of trade-political relations between Rome and China. Term "Silk Road", established by Ferdinand von Richthofen, will in this work stand for transcontinental overland network of the larger amount of trade routes, enabling exchange of commodities between Mediterranean and Far East. Relevancy of this term will be summed up in conclusion based on historical and material evidence.
Late Carboniferous silicified wood from the western part of the Kladno-Rakovnik Basin
Holeček, Jakub ; Sakala, Jakub (advisor) ; Pšenička, Josef (referee)
Kladno-Rakovník Basin and especially its western part is well known for its abundant silicified wood, so-called as "araukarity". The occurrence of these fossils is described since the 19th century, however, modern systematic classification is lacking. Araukarity, linked mainly to the Týnec and Líně Formations, are found almost exclusively on the fields, therefore it was difficult to implement any detailed sedimentological conclusions. The Master Thesis is focused on the western part of the Kladno-Rakovník Basin, where large amount of material was discovered. After a detailed xylotomical study of thin sections and polished cross sections, two different types of wood were discerned. First related to the coniferous and cordaite wood, attributable to the of the morphogenus Araucarioxylon and the second one, rather rare and unknown in the western part of the Kladno-Rakovník Basin represents a calamite wood and it is assigned to the morphogenus Arthropitys. I was able to partially confirm Skoček's (1970) theory, that so-called black araukarity are linked to the grey (Kladno and Slaný) formations.
