Zionist without Zeal: Imagination and Performance of Transnational Belonging
Pokorná, Anna ; Ezzeddine, Petra (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee) ; Szaló, Csaba (referee)
This dissertation based on a fieldwork conducted among Czech Jewish youth during a ten-days educational touristic program Taglit-Birthright explores production of transnational space of mutual belonging. The transnational belonging to Jewish collective is produced through particular physical space of Israel through practice of tourism in collective constructed by the programme as a collective of common origin based on "blood ties". I examine participants' tourist bodily experience, performances, emotions and attitudes as a site of production and reproduction of transnational space using a concept of embodiment as ways in which the individual grasps the world around him/her and makes sense of it in ways that engage both body and mind. Transnational space created throughout the programme becomes socially constructed emotional category of "ahavat Israel", "love for Israel" that might conceal its political implications. Keywords: Transnationalism, diaspora, tourism, embodiment, Jewish youth, Taglit-Birthright, Czech Republic, Israel
Bizarre food? Is good to think.
Matušínská, Radka ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Slavková, Markéta (referee)
The following thesis discusses how bizarre food is conceptualized within the anthropology of food and how it connects to symbolic anthropology. Through the complex description of the individual experience during the process of eating bizarre foods, the perception of the experience and the various motivations behind it will be explained. From an anthropological point of view it will be examined whether bizarre foods are the carriers of cultural significance and how this is further demonstrated within the culture. Through analysis of some specific foods I will also try to reveal their symbolic meaning.
Non - European Cultures in the Mirror of Selected Eighteenth Century Opera Libretti. An Attempt to Typology
Pšenička, Jan ; Ondo Grečenková, Martina (advisor) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
English abstract The master's thesis deals with different representations of non-European cultures and their inhabitants in musical dramas (operas and related genres) of the eighteenth century. Firstly it gives some typical characteristics of these musical artworks in historical context (focusing on Italian and French examples especially) than it concentrates on the topic of so-called exoticism in general. The final part of the thesis which is based on three case studies formulates some typical approaches to the problem of representation of non- european cultures by analyzing musical settings, stage representations and especially librettoes of three important operatic works by Vivaldi (Motezuma), Graun (Montezuma) and Rameau (Les Indes Galantes). The topic of exoticism in Handel 's selected operas is mentioned in a short survey. Keywords: 18th century, music history, opera history, Italian opera, French opera, exoticism, inrercultural relationships, comparative studies
The Traditional Role and Perspective of the Bazaar
Hanzlíčková, Helena ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Petrášek, Michal (referee) ; Halbich, Marek (referee)
ENGLISH ABSTRACT This thesis deals with the specification of bazaars and the bazaar economy. Bazaar [bāzār] is a Persian word for marketplace, also used in Turkish- çarşi [čarši]. Like the Arabic term souk وسق [súq], bazaar is both the concrete trading place, where many people meet and interact but like the English word market or the French le marché is also understood as a more abstract notion of buying and selling in the sense of demand and supply and it involves small shopping stalls, modern shopping and business avenues and shopping malls as well. Bazaar can refer to a single shopping unit or a street in the frame of the marketplace or outside its boundaries or to the whole business complex. The marketplace has symbolic and social importance indicative of its urban centrality. The souk is seen as one of the quintessential oriental spaces. Clifford Geertz and his own studies of Moroccan and Indonesian rural markets inspired many economic anthropologists to examine the structure of marketplaces in the developing world as products of informational scarcity. The bazaar economy was defined in Clifford Geertz' extremly influential anthropological study on the bazaar economy in Sefrou (1978), a quite small town in Morocco with about 600 shops. Geertz was the first to emphasise the important difference...

Anglický název: Ethnography of bus tour: the tour leader's role in the formation of tourist experiences
Meliashkevich, Illia ; Halbich, Marek (advisor) ; Kábová, Adriana (referee)
The master's thesis deals with long bus tours and role of tour leader. The theoretical core is interdisciplinary definition of tourism as a specific assemblage of practices with a relationship to people, objects, practices of others and self. The concept of the third space makes it possible to overcome the established definition of tourist within the traditional dichotomy (self - Other, home - away etc.). Therefore, the tourist is regarded as a metaphor of both these opposites simultaneously. The tourist experiences are concerned here as psychological phenomenon consists of expectations, perception of tourist events and tourist memory. The main objective of this paper is to explore formation of tourist experiences during specific conditions of long bus tours from Belarus to EU countries, and to reveal the importance of tour leader within this process. Keywords: bus tour, tour leader, tourism, tourist experiences, anthropology of tourism
