Memory and memories of World War II in Czech lands. The war memoirs of the Czechoslovak soldiers from second external resistance

The author of this master thesis tries to capture severa! moments of life stories of Czechoslovak soldiers and their so called war memoires (e.g. private war diaries and written memoirs, novels, poetry, interviews) bom during and after the Second World War. In the first part of dissertation is conceming e.g. these key questions: Why did the soldiers give testimony? How they did it? In what kind of written form they made it? Why those days seemed so cruel to them? How these testimonies were used by media and historians and how did they play a role in the process of fromning collective memory in Czech Lands. Examining these sources, author tried to answer for these questions. Important goal of dissertation is to demonstrate, how memoirs was perceived throughout centuries, since the ancient ages to the present and what forms were continiously developed. In the second part, us ing transformed concept of "realms of memory" (P. Nora) and "memory frames" (M. Halbwachs), author tries to demonstrate how these sources yould be used in reserahc of memory and every day life of Czechoslovak soldiers in qualitative way. A nation lives as long as its cultural monuments

The Nazi occupation of the territory of Bohemia and Moravia, the creation of Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia and subsequent events are without any doubt one of the fundamental themes of the Czech historiography. In last decades the Czech historiography brought near and analyzed the basic principles of the ocupation politics, position of the Protectorare of Bohemia and Moravia within the Grossgerman Empire, clarified the social and economic relations, integration to mechanism of the Nazi economy, outlined the principles of collaboration, restistance, racial and political persecution, the proportion of individuals and groups on this crimes. On the other hand, it very rarely touched the research of methods of spoliation of cultural assets on the territory of Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia. This Doctoral Thesis retlects the need to clarify methods, technical, personal and legislative framework of spoliations of moveable art assets of the enemies of National Socialist Regime in Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia, bring closer in a certain chronological and factual order and capture of spoliation methods. Czech refugees in Kralupy nad Vltavou after Munich agreement (1938)

V poslední době se rozšířily příspěvky k problému uprchlíků, kteří v důsledku Mnichovské dohody a mnoha dalších důvodů, ať už politických, rasových, či ekonomických opustili své domovy na území zabraném Německem, Polskem a Maďarskem. Stalo se tak pravděpodobně i v souvislosti s tlakem sudetoněmeckých krajanských sdružení na odškodnění za zabavený majetek po 2. světové válce. Pozornost není upřena jen na ně, ale i na české přestěhovalce ze Slovenska. Obecně mě k tomuto tématu inspirovaly články Miroslava Šišky v sobotním Právu a snaha poznat situaci v mém městě, které leželo na cestě uprchlíků z pohraničí do hlavního města. Důvodem byla také snaha vidět téma s konkrétními aktéry - osobami, které dosavadní obecná literatura, vzhledem ke své podstatě, může velmi těžce zachytit. I proto jsem se rozhodl, směřovat jádro této práce k osvětlení situace v Kralupech nad Vltavou -okresním městě ve středních Čechách, které se muselo ze dne na den vypořádat s přílivem stovek uprchlíků. (Uprchlíkem je pro mě každý, kdo splňoval definici tohoto označení uvedenou v Jednacím řádu Ústavu pro péči o uprchlíky. Se stejným významem používám i další označení hraničáři, či utečenci.) Karel Horký and his Fronta weekly (Rises and falls of Czech journalist and writer)

Publicista a spisovatel Karel Horký patřil po desetiletí k neprávem opomíjeným osobnostem české politické a kulturní scény první poloviny 20. století. Přitom ve své době byl vnímán jako nepřehlédnutelný a velmi zdatný fejetonista, který se dokázal bystře, obratně a mnohdy bez ohledu na následky vyjadřovat k různým společenským jevům. Byl autorem jak laskavých vzpomínkových fejetonů, tak i vášnivých výpadů a politických pamfletů. Nikdy nezůstal lhostejný, pokud zpozoroval, že se někomu děje křivda. Pro svůj cit pro spravedlnost byl mnohými obdivován a nazýván "rytířem fejetonu", "rytířem ulice" či "tribunem spravedlnosti". Jinými byl zatracován za nepochopitelný přechod od levice k pravici, a zvláště za nesmiřitelný boj proti dvěma hlavním představitelům a symbolům zahraničního protirakouského odboje a první republiky, Tomáši Garriguovi Masarykovi a Edvardu Benešovi. Tento Horkého boj, jenž začal již v době jeho účasti na zahraničním odboji, byl náplní téměř dvou desetiletí jeho života. Do povědomí svých současníků se K. Horký zapsal také jako zakladatel a vydavatel několika časopisů. Největší politický dopad z nich měl týdeník Fronta, vydávaný ve 30. letech 20. století. Socialism is work. The life of Rudolf Bechyně 1881-1948

The present thesis discusses the life of Rudolf Bechyně, the eminent Czech Social-Democratic politician of the first half of the twentieth century. The author studies in a practically chronological order the life's path of the poli tician, start ing in Moravia (sti ll dur ing the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), over the period of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia, until his exile to London during the Second Wor ld War when Bechyně, a s the Chairman of the Council of State, became together wi th the President Edvard Beneš the main leader of the Czech resistance movement abroad. Wi th respect to extant archival materials, the thesi s focuses more systematically on the description of Bechyně' s work at the Ministry of Public Supply, as well as on the last decade of his life when the politician was forced to revalue most of hi s atti tudes and principles. Al though the author tends to follow the traditional biographical pattern, through the fate of Rudolf Bechyně he furthermore depicts the fate of the Czech Social Democratic Party.
