The present thesis deals with the media image of women's everyday life in the socialist era. It focuses on the period of time between 1970 and 1975, i.e. on the so called early normalization. Niklová, Olga ; Dudová, Radka (advisor) ; Mlynář, Jakub (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine racial socialization strategies and practices of white Czech mothers raising biracial black and white children. The research question is theoretically framed by critical race theory perspective. Data were obtained based on an exploratory approach through semi-structured interviews with ten mothers of underage children. Thematic analysis revealed some of the strategies, practices and concepts described in the Western societies. Also, distinct themes in the Czech context emerged, mainly due to the racial homogeneity of the Czech society. The main findings indicate an identification of specific racial socialization strategy connected to hypervisibility of the children, barriers mothers face in developing race related competencies and the absence of preparation for bias.
The Economic Situation of Single Mothers
Kalačová, Michaela ; Vlček, Josef (advisor) ; Dudová, Radka (referee)
Approximately 250 thousand single-parent families, mostly mothers as principal breadwinners, are currently living in the Czech Republic. The insufficient financial security means an important limitation of these families, partly caused by the worsened situation of single mothers at the job market. The aim of this bachelor's thesis was to find out what the financial situation of single-parent families in the Czech Republic was in 2018. I took advantage the official statistics of the Czech Statistical Office and the Czech Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, which enabled me to carry out a secondary data analysis and find out what the economic situation was in single-mother families in 2018 and how it evolved since 2008. I compared the data with the data on nuclear family, which made me more comprehensive picture about the economic situation of single-mother families, which has improved over the years 2008 - 2018. Keywords: economic situation, single-parent families, single-mother, incomes, expenses, the Czech Republic
Gender inequalities on the labour market of the Czech Republic
Škorvagová, Nikola ; Mudd, Dana (advisor) ; Dudová, Radka (referee)
My work focuses on gender inequalities appearing in the Police of the Czech Republic, specifically police job positions requiring administrative work and field work which is primarily considered a masculine domain. I use an analysis of in-depth interviews with police officers who work in those places and I try to map how these women perceive and interpret gender inequalities in their jobs. how they deal with them and what role gender inequalities play in their decision whether to work in a masculine profession like this. The work uses the theory of gender perspectives, which builds on the argument that the labor market produces unequal conditions and unequal treatment for individuals who move here. The results of my work show that police officers are aware of the occurrence of gender inequalities appearing in various spheres in these positions. Respondents problematize some of the exposed gender inequalities respondents and indicate their possible solutions, some they perceive as natural and completely adapt to them. Keywords: gender, inequality, labour market, police
Impact of divorce on their children's education
Kostelecká, Veronika ; Hamplová, Dana (advisor) ; Dudová, Radka (referee)
This thesis focuses on the impact of parental divorce on children's educational attainment. Education level is considered to be an important predictor for life trajectories. Divorce, on the other hand, impairs the stability of the former family unit and worsens the situation of households and their members. Children are negatively emotionally and mentally affected by these changes. They show externalizing behavioural problems, and their future romantic relationship are more likely to end up in divorce. We use data from the Czech Household Panel Survey to analyse the impact of divorce on children's education. Our results from multiple linear regression show that divorce negatively affects the years of education attained by men and women. Moreover, results from binary logistic regression show that the odds ratio to obtain a university degree of men and women who have experienced parental divorce is lower in comparison to children from intact families. We argue that parental divorce has a negative impact on educational attainment of their children. Key words: Family, education, divorce, inequalities
