Audiovisual Translation: the Role of the Translator in the Creation of Czech Dubbing

The aim of the master thesis is to explore in detail a specific field of translation: translation for dubbing. The thesis focuses on the role and position of the dubbing translator on the contemporary Czech audiovisual market and it also examines the economic background of the profession. The empirical part is based on a quantitative questionnaire survey and qualitative interviews with translators. To analyse the results of the research, the descriptive analysis was used. Thanks to the interviews, the thesis also compares the theoretical requirements of translation for dubbing with the current practice of translation for dubbing in the Czech Republic. This publication was written in 2019 by Marie Marquis et al. at the University of Montreal. The thesis also includes a commentary on the overall translation process and everything that a translator must pay attention to during their work. Therefore, in addition to the translation itself, the thesis also includes the analysis of the source text, the translation method and fictional assignment, selected translation problems and their solution through translation techniques and shifts.
Terminology management in the institutional settings and the creation of terms for the IATE database

This thesis deals with the management of terminology in a multilingual institutional environment, with an emphasis on the organisation of terminology work in the institutions of the European Union, and includes a contribution to the project of Terminology Coordination Unit of the European Parliament Terminology without Borders. The theoretical part first describes the role of terminology in a multilingual institutional environment, defines the basic concepts of terminology work, and introduces the main international terminology standards. It then discusses the topic of terminology management in the institutions of the EU, in UN, and NATO, and inter-institutional cooperation in this area. Based on the gathered information, a professional profile of terminology staff in the institutional environment is drawn up. The European Union's terminology database IATE is also thoroughly discussed. The empirical part of the thesis focuses on the workflow for the preparation of terminological entries in the field of complementary and alternative medicine for the Terminology without Borders project, which serves as an illustration of the process of preparing terms for the IATE database.

This bachelor thesis consists of two parts. The first part contains a Czech translation of chapters 8, 9 and part of chapter 10 from the popular science book Le grand roman des maths: de la préhistoire à nos jours by the French author Mickaël Launay. The book deals with the history of mathematics and the selected chapters named "La force des triangles", "Vers l'inconnue" and "À la suite" focus on trigonometry, equations and number sequences respectively. The second part of this thesis consists of a translation commentary, which includes a detailed translation analysis of the source text, a description of the translation method and a reflection on selected translation problems and their solutions.

The role and status of court interpreters in France

This theoretical-empirical diploma thesis addresses the role and position of court interpreters in France and is divided into two parts. The theoretical part consists of two sections. The first focuses on professional literature on court interpreting and, marginally, court translation. The second section deals with court interpreting and translation in France, comparing selected aspects to the situation in the Czech Republic. The topic is introduced by way of a short outline of the history of court translation and interpreting in France. The empirical part is presented as a complementary quantitative study. Participants in the survey were court interpreters cooperating with courts of appeal in France whose working languages are Czech and French. The aim of the empirical part was to specify certain vague regulations that define the conditions for the appointment of court interpreters, proving of professional experience that the interpreter has gained over a three-year trial period, the number and form of training courses that the interpreter must attend. Quality of amateur and professional translation of film subtitles

(in English): The aim of this thesis is to discuss the issue of quality of audio-visual translation in amateur and professional environments and to examine the impact of the quality of subtitle translation on the viewer's understanding and overall impressions of the film. As a part of our empirical research, we conducted a translatological analysis of Czech subtitles for the French comedy Le sens de la fête (C'est la vie!, 2017) and the social drama Les misérables (2019). Subsequently, using the focus group method (group interviews), we organized an experiment with 6-7 participants, during which we showed a part of the film with professional subtitles to one group of viewers and with amateur subtitles to another group, and then we tried to verify their impressions and overall understanding of the film as well as their perception of the quality of the subtitles. The results obtained from each group were compared with each other and then with the findings from our translatological analysis. Among other findings, the study shows that quality had an impact on the overall impressions and understanding of the film, especially for the first film, which was based on long dialogues, jokes and wordplays, and where the difference in quality between the professional and amateur versions was more marked.
