Jeffrey Hatcher: Possibilities of Dramatization and Adaptation
Zamazalová, Kateřina ; Christov, Petr (advisor) ; Pšenička, Martin (referee)
Despite the fame Ohio native Jeffrey Hatcher has gained on the American continent, he is fairly unknown to the Czech audience. Out of his extensive work only three texts found their way to the Czech domestic stages. Including: A Picasso, Compleat Female Stage Beauty and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. It can be noted that all the works mentioned above are adaptations in a certain sense of the word. However, it is necessary to admit that the dramas A Picasso and Compleat Female Stage Beauty are only loosely inspired by historical events that served the author's own artistic purposes. Nevertheless, Hatcher's Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde can be considered a real adaptation. The fact that this text is connected to the work of another author, in this case a novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, is not unusual within the work of the discussed playwright. Adaptations (or dramatizations) play a fundamental role in it. For this reason, in my diploma thesis I intend to reflect on the way in which the playwright approaches the text of the original and how he transforms it. I plan to focus more closely on the following texts: A Confederacy of Dunces (based on a novel of a same name by John Kennedy Toole), Compleat Female Stage Beauty (the author's own text which he adapted for a movie screen), Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (based on the...

The thesis discuss opera presenting in a netraditional space of revolving theatre in Český Krumlov in the most controversial period of its existence - it means after the reconstruction in 1989. The author mapped the case in the chapter Reconstruction - the State after the Velvet Revolution. There is shown in which situation the inscenations came. The first part of the thesis is about the history of this theatre in the castle garden - it is called Rediscovery of the Castle Garden in Český Krumlov for the Theatre Production. In the next chapter The History of Opera in front of the Revolving Theatre the author focussed on the progress of opera in the castle garden in Český Krumlov. She solves staging and dramaturgical limits of the space. She deals with the influence of the space on the form of inscenations on the base of analysis of three different inscenations of Verdi's Rigoletto in the chapter Three Rigoletts in Český Krumlov. The inscenations she set into the general historical context of this theatre and she brang forth the picture at the specialist public in the chapter The Picture at the Specialist Public in 1995 - 2013. Dionisis Fotopoulos
Ihyane, Marcela ; Stehlíková, Eva (advisor) ; Christov, Petr (referee)
This master thesis deals with theatre work of Dionisis Fotopoulos, the most popular, worldwide famous, and award-winning Greek scene designer. The thesis is probably the first malysis ofFotopoulos' scene design while, so far, there is no other research essay written on :his topic either in Greece, or in some other country. I try to show Fotopoulos' creative periods and style s on his work on ancient Greek lrama. Dionisis Fotopoulos is considered to be one of the few Greek scene designers who )rought strong Greek tradition of staging ancient tragedies and comedies abroad. Ris masks md costumes draw on the tradition which tinctures the Greek theatre, as well as they are :onsidered to be experimental and visually very effective. The other reason why we focus on mcient Greek drama is that it is also believed to be a part of European, not only Greek ;ultural heritage. The first chapters contain basic information about history of a modem Greek theatre in ~Oth century, about a history of staging ancient Greek drama in modem Greece and few notes _bout living Greek theatre tradition which try to explain its basic phenomenon to Czech eaders. The following chapters contain short Fotopoulos' biography and analysis ofhis theatre vork. I have chosen the important performances of each style and period and I tried to...
Lagronová feat. Nebeský
Jahn, Jakub ; Christov, Petr (advisor) ; Pšenička, Martin (referee)
The presented MA thesis examines the relationship of the staging of Jan Nebeský with its source, the drama Terezka from Lenka Lagronová. It is dividend into two sections; in the mst part we are dealing with the sources of the drama, mostly with the biographical notes of Saint Therese of Lisieux. Nowadays, these are published under the title The Story oj a Sou/. Subsequently we throughoutly analyze the drama. The analysis implies that the drama is conceived to mediate The Little Way, the teaching of Saint Theresa from Lisieux, to the reader. In the second section we analyze the staging Terezka, directed by Jan Nebeský, which had opening night in Divadlo Komedie on March 3, 1997. We mostly try to refer to the distinct directorial-dramaturgic arrangements, which essentially altered the semantic character of drama. In the conclusion we summanze the semantic drift cause by the "translation of drama into the theatricallanguage".
The writings of Bernard-Marie Koltès: problems of the translation from the original French to Czech and consequences in the Czech cultural environment
Balajová, Kristýna ; Šotolová, Jovanka (advisor) ; Christov, Petr (referee)
The aim of this thesis has been to create a comparative critical analysis of the originals and the Czech translations of mature writings of Bernard-Marie Kolts, as well as to assess the reception of his work in the Czech culture. The first part of the paper shortly introduces the author's life and the main features of his work. It is followed by the key chapter of the thesis, the critical analysis of the Czech translations. The purpose of this part is to find out whether these texts can be classified "adequate translations", a normative model that we take from the Czech theories of translation (Jiří Levý, Karel Hausenblas and others). We are looking closely at four out of eight Kolts' plays considered as "mature" (Dans la solitude des champs de coton, Quai ouest, Roberto Zucco and Le Combat de ngre et de chiens). This sample has been chosen on the grounds of the following criterions: it reperesents the work of all the five translators that have translated the Kolts' writings to Czech and at the same time it involves all the distinct literary proceedings of the author. The analysis is focusing first of all on the Czech versions of the four plays that were published in the anthology of Kolts' mature texts released in 2006. However, these translations are examined and evaluated in confrontation with other...
The Alfred Jarry Pantomime
Plicková, Karolina ; Christov, Petr (advisor) ; Pšenička, Martin (referee)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to employ a theatrological approach to the work of one of the most original and influential Czech pantomime troupes of all time, entitled Pantomima Alfreda Jarryho (the Alfred Jarry Pantomime, AJP). The company was established in 1966 in Prague by two young mime artists Boris Hybner and Ctibor Turba and existed as late as the political liquidation of the troupe in 1972 that came due to the process of the so-called normalization period in the former Czechoslovakia. The thesis consists of four major parts that are divided into several subsections. The first part deals with the historical contexts of the art of mime, both international and domestic. The AJP troupe represents the second generation of Czech pantomime that refused the style of the so-called modern pantomime expressed in the international context by Marcel Marceau and in the Czech context by Ladislav Fialka at the Theatre Na zábradlí (Theatre on the Balustrade). Since there is no monograph strictly based on this theatre, although it played a major role among the newly established small theatres in the sixties (and had an important influence on the poetics of the AJP troupe), we briefly introduce the poetics of both the pantomime company led by Fialka and the drama company led by the director Jan Grossman,...
