The Use of History in the Power Struggles in the Late Middle Ages
Jauernig, Jakub ; Nejedlý, Martin (advisor) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee) ; Drška, Václav (referee)
4 Abstract This paper focuses on using narratives about the origins of princely power among late medieval rulers to justify their legitimacy. Its principal aim is to reveal the intercon- nectedness of widespread narrative sources such as chronicles and romances, on the one hand, with still understudied sources such as armorials, heraldic miscellanies and genea- logical scrolls, on the other. The latter type of source has recently begun to attract more medievalists, but it isn't easy to work with them for several reasons. Little is known about the practical use of materials such as genealogical scrolls, which can be more than five metres long. Another reason is that this type of source combines several different aspects. It combines textual, pictorial and diagrammatic parts, which form an integral unit that cannot be dissected and examined separately. This type of source was fully charged with historical, prophetic and symbolic content and was probably intended to serve not only representational but also propagandistic purposes for the rulers. In this thesis, I trace the use of historical narratives on the figure of Brutus of Troy, the eponymous founder of the Insular Kingdom of Britain in late medieval England and Wales. The thesis focuses on his- toriographical sources that introduce the figure of Brutus...

The Manuscripts of the oldest Czech Hours of the Virgin
Neufus, Zuzana ; Holá, Mlada (advisor) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee)
EN The master thesis focuses on the study of the oldest surviving manuscripts in the Czech language called Hours of the Virgin Mary, which became a bestseller in its time. The manuscript of the Hours of the Queen of Bohemia with the signature KNM V H 36, deposited in the National Library Klementinum in Prague, is the centerpiece. The manuscript is attributed to one of the royal wives of the family of King Wenceslas IV. A variant is the Empress Dowager Elizabeth of Pomerania or Queen Sophie of Bavaria or Princess Anne of Luxembourg, later married as Queen Anne of Bohemia. The commissioner or owner of the manuscript has not been precisely identified to this day. The thesis presents a group of codices from the medieval period with signatures and possibly digital references. The main topic is the catalogue The Manuscripts of the oldest Czech Hours of the Virgin containing a description of the manuscript, its decoration, illuminations and iconographic description. The thesis concludes with a summary of the study, a pictorial appendix, lists of cited manuscripts and literature, and in addition a link to online access to the digitized Czech studies manuscripts. The thesis tries to give a simple insight into the medieval manuscripts of the Virgin's Hours Mary and their iconography. The thesis could...
Swivel seal fob
Maličký, Pavel ; Bláhová, Marie (advisor) ; Županič, Jan (referee)
F Abstract The main goal of this diploma thesis is a presentation of the phenomenon of the calotte rotary seal, a type of a personal sealing tool allowing the user to seal with three identities. Their development can be traced from the last quarter of the 17th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The importance of the calotte seals can be seen on more levels: they witness the end of the era of sealing under a paper cover, symbolize the transformation of the sealing tool into a device indicating its owner's status and turn the seal into a piece of jewelry in a short time. Since these were personal items, the frequency of their occurrence in collections is minimal and references in the expert literature are almost not to be found. As late as in 1970, a brief mention of their existence was made in the basic work of European sfragistics by E. Kittel: "Siegel". It is clear from this that a familiarization with this seal type has offered an attractive subject for the diploma thesis, divided into a general and a special part. The general part presents the two-hundred-year development of sealing tools' construction, describing it and introducing terminology, richly documented by pen-and-ink drawings of their individual components. Special attention is dedicated to the calottes, classified according to the...
The phenomenon of the Franciscan monastery in the medieval society.
Svobodová, Jana ; Bláhová, Marie (advisor) ; Hlaváček, Petr (referee) ; Blechová, Lenka (referee)
The dissertation presents an edition of the medieval Latin chronicle of Eberhard Ablauff de Rheno. It is a previously unprocessed source. The chronicle is part of the Cheb Codex from the provenance of the Franciscans of the Bohemian-Moravian-Silesian vicariate. Today it is stored in the National Library. The Ablauff Chronicle records events concerning the Franciscans from 1451 to 1528, when Ablauff probably died. The chronicle is set in the broader context of late medieval Franciscan historiography produced in the Central European geographical area. The dissertation includes a codicological and paleographical analysis of the chronicle. On the basis of the editorially accessible text of the Ablauff Chronicle, it has been possible to discuss in a separate chapter the figure of the chronicler Eberhard Ablauff de Rheno, whose life can be imagined from inscriptions in his copied and written texts or from notes in the books he read. The edition of the Chronicle is supplemented by an overview of the Franciscan friars mentioned in the so-called Registrum fratrum. The edited chronicle can serve as a basic source for the religious and ecclesiastical history of our territory. Ablauff captured the continuity of the development of the Bohemian-Moravian-Silesian vicariate, where provincial chapters were...
The Bible of Zamoyski and Czech Translation of the Bible to the First Half of the 15th Century
Šteflová, Květa ; Holá, Mlada (advisor) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee)
This Bachelor thesis is divided into two main parts. The first deals with czech translations of liturgical texts and especially of the Bible until the first half of the 15th century, trying to map their beginnings as well as their development. Then the first three so-called redactions of the czech translation of the Bible are analyzed, which make an imaginary bridge to the second part of this thesis, which deals with the Bible of Zamoyski. At first the Bible of Zamoyski is put into the historical context, which is connected with the problem of its dating. The analysis then includes the arrangement and content of the biblical books, corrections and notes and finally iluminations. At theend there is an attempt,at least briefly, todescribe possible fate of the manuscript, which is based on the signatures preserved in it.
The problem of succession in norman and Angevin England(1066-1216) in narrative sources of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century
Malý, Jan ; Drška, Václav (advisor) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee) ; Zelenka, Jan (referee)
The dissertation is focused on the problem of succession to the royal throne of England in the period from the accession of William the Conqueror in 1066 to the death of King John in 1216. This topic is studied from the point of view of narrative sources written mostly in the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century. The goal of this thesis is to follow the making of the image of succession in England and to find some tendencies of development regarding the approach to the accession to the throne in these narrative sources through its analysis and comparison. The core of this work is made by the analysis of Angevin narrative sources, contextualized by the study of other works which influenced the emergence of Angevin texts and the forming of their authors' opinions and views.
Bohemian manuscripts in the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library.
Hadaš, Jiří ; Holá, Mlada (advisor) ; Bláhová, Marie (referee)
The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library has a collection of rare manuscripts, some of which have a direct connection to Bohemian environment, either because they originated here or were part of medieval institutions and their libraries. The institution of The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library in relation to medieval and early modern manuscripts of Bohemian provenance has not yet been studied. The research of Bohemians stored in foreign institutions has a long tradition in codicological research, as numerous foreign collections contain a large number of manuscripts of Bohemian provenance. In the course of the study, monuments were found that had been forgotten. Perhaps they do not have such importance and are not so rare compared to other collections of Bohemians, but it is still worth recalling those writings and processing them with a closer study. At the same time, it should be mentioned that one of the documented manuscripts is the so- called Voynich manuscript, which is considered the rarest manuscript in the collections and at the same time one of the most mysterious books in the world. This increased research attention is being paid to the monument itself. Elaboration of the topic is not only beneficial for the knowledge of the history of manuscripts, but also for the institution of the...
PPCP in water and their influence on water ecosystems
Bláhová, Marie ; Fuksa, Josef (advisor) ; Matoušková, Milada (referee)
The aim of the bachelor thesis is to identify the main representatives of a wide group of Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCP for short) and to explain the reasons why they pose an increasing risk to aquatic ecosystems. In the theoretical part, the work is devoted to defining the concept of PPCP and explaining the main reasons why their concentration in the aquatic environment has been growing steadily in recent decades. It also deals with the division into the main groups of preparations found in the aquatic environment, their characteristics, documented impacts on aquatic organisms and currently detected concentrations in the world's rivers. In the following chapters, the thesis addresses the issue of the effectiveness of the removal of these substances and the mechanisms by which they can be improved. The work briefly summarizes the effects on the organisms caused by both bioaccumulation and endocrine disruption and at the end of the theoretical part deals with the properties of ten selected drugs, which are regularly detected in Czech rivers. The practical part evaluates the volume of sales of ten drugs in the Czech Republic during 2019, their detected concentrations in the rivers Vltava, Elbe, Morava and Dyje and processing these data to assess the risk of concentrations found for...
