The old house - Ruin or Home?
Hořejší, Anna ; Haluzík, Radovan (advisor) ; Beseda, Jan (referee)
The main topic of this diploma thesis is the reconstruction of an old house. This is concepted in the perspective of "material culture studies", where the material object (a house) works as a starting point for the understanding of the human values, relationships, feelings and attitudes. These characteristics were studied in the qualitative research (the fieldwork), in the area near Prague. The dynamics of this area corresponds to the context of my work which is based on the background of the relationship between "the Old and/ versus the New" and the relationship between "Town and/versus Country". The work starts with the theoretical part, which is orientated on the actual phenomenons of "suburbanization" and "dream about the family house" and on the contrast of an old and a new house. Then a study of the "ruin" (and its social signals and contexts) follows. The "core" of the work can be found in the practical part. It describes the stories of the concrete reconstructions and with the analyses of the meanings that have emerged on the surface. We observe a specific "transformation of the ruin in the home", a mutual "taming" between the man and the old house and the inner dynamics of this process. There is not only an adaptation of the building, but also the changes of its occupants - overcoming of...

Beseda, Jan ; Ezzeddine, Petra (advisor) ; Jakoubek, Marek (referee)
All in one sack: a media anthropology of the Roma This dissertation brings a new view to Czech media sciences on the subject of ethnic minority. The purposes of this work is to demonstrate: how the Roma perceive representations of themselves in printed media, how they are perceived, and how the image of the Roma is constructed in print media. From an anthropologist's standpoint, the topic of this research paper is being analyzed from an emic point of view, meaning from the participant's perspective. The disciplinary framework falls under the umbrella of cultural studies and media anthropology. The dissertation concerns itself mainly with the self-definition of the Roma: a Rom being someone who defines her/himself as a Rom. The work examines data taken from eleven in-person interviews with Romani participants and ten interviews with persons from the ethnic majority. The main theme of these interviews is the subject's response to nine articles sourced from Czech and Roma newspapers. Additional analysis is focused on a discourse of Roma magazines. The dissertation is crowned by analysis of observation of the life of Roma redaction. The work shows how the Romani people's perceptions of themselves stem from the everyday. The Roma feel that they have a mostly negative public image, especially in the...
Media Activities of People with Disabilty: Anthropological view
Vejvoda, Martin ; Beseda, Jan (advisor) ; Pinc, Zdeněk (referee)
This diploma thesis in the field of media anthropology observes the reception and production of media messages from the viewpoint of people who move with the assistance of electrical or mechanical wheelchair. One of the main concepts discussed is the identity ambivalence or else the discrepancy between social and individual aspect of the disabled people's identity. Disabled people perceive themselves as fully-fledged members of society. However, they must often face the opposite attitude on the part of the majority. This is apparent also in the mass media which depict disabled people according to the members of this category in a stereotypical way. The media image of disabled people has according to them mainly two forms: on one hand, they are depicted as dependent persons; on the other hand, they are applauded for achievements they themselves see as trivial. It is possible to grasp the production of media stereotypes with respect to the concept of the journalistic field developed by Pierre Bourdieu. It features hurriedness, dependence on the market, plebiscite and in consequence symbolic violence. From this viewpoint the commercial media strive to satisfy everyone. Hence journalists select themes which occupy space where something else should be told. The disabled people's organizations are aware of this...
VOYAGER MESSAGE
Čápová, Klára Anna ; Egorova, Julia (advisor) ; Beseda, Jan (referee)
The theme of this work is the Voyager message that the U.S. National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) sent to the universe in 1977 on interstellar probes Voyager I and Voyager II. Voyager message consists of a phonograph record - called Golden Record - that carries a message for extraterrestrial civilization. The work provides the basic overview of scientific search for extraterrestrial life and describes the NASA Voyager program. Except for the basic overview of the message contents, the work offers an analysis of both visual and audio parts of the Voyager Message compilation. It employs the anthropology of science as an essential theoretical framework for examining the message contents. The work explores the reflections of scientific viewpoint and supposes science as the fundamental concept that shaped the composition of the Golden Record and considers mathematics as an universal tool of interstellar communication efforts.
