Commented translation: Guide de manoeuvre (Éric Tabarly, Luçon: Éditions Le Télégramme, 2008)

The thesis consists of two main parts- translation and its commentary. It is a translation of 3 chapters of a French yachtsmen guide Guide de manoeuvre (Wharf mooring or double moor to another boat, Anchoring and Man overboard maneuver). In my translation, I tried to preserve the major function of the original text - to inform and instruct the reader. The second part of the work is a commentary of the translation which is focused on translation analysis of the original text, typology of translation problems and the methods of the translation. In the translation analysis I describe the original text with the factors affecting the text. Then I focus on the translation problems I dealt with and how they were solved. In the conclusion, I describe the translations methods I used.

The work consists of two parts, translation and its commentary. It is a translation of a French breeders guide Bien vivre avec son chat - the chapter about feeding and the first part of the chapter about cats hygiene and care. I preserved the main function of the original text in the translation - to provide information to the recipient, to give them useful knowledge and advice. In the second part of the work, I reflect the problems of the translating process. First, I characterise in detail the original text, regarding both extratextual and intratextual factors. Then I focus on individual translation problems and create the typology of the problems. At the end of the work I summarize the methods used in the translation.

Changes in translations of Maupassant's Bel-Ami in 20th century

The present thesis analyses and compares three Czech translations of Maupassant's Bel-Ami - that of Jindřich Hořejší (1919, 1933), Břetislav Štorm (1956, 1958, 1959, 1967, 1968, 1972) and Dana Melanová (1999, 2004). The introduction looks in brief at the writer's life and work and its reception in the Czech context. It subsequently analyses the novel both in terms of its themes and language, such an analysis being a prerequisite for evaluation of the individual translation solutions. The second, core part focuses on the translations themselves. It studies their various aspects and compares the approaches and strategies adopted by the translators. Every chapter is concluded by a summary of partial findings and conclusions, from which the overall approach of all the three translators is later deduced. The comparison of the translations opens with an analysis of sentence structures, the original being very concise, making translation of the book a difficult task. The next chapter covers Maupassant's poetic imagery in the translations, attention given particularly to the clarity and accuracy of images. Georges Feydeau: The lady from Maxim's. A comparative analysis and review of translations into Czech

In its theoretical part the present thesis treated the theatrical genre of French farce and described its position and rank in the structure of the Theatre of the Boulevard at the end of the 19t h century. Apart from a short introduction to its history, main dramatists and their key plays are presented, as well as some crucial dramatic techniques and their evolution during the 20t h century. Considering the fact that the main object of the study was a work of one of the most important farce representatives, the thesis focused on the conditions of creating plays and on their reception during the famous Belle Epoque. Another aim was to define first translations and adaptations of vaudevillian farces into Czech with reference to the actual development of the language and the situation on stages at the end of the 19t h and at the beginning of the 20t h century. Besides portraying the background and conditions of the audience's warm reception, the work also briefly introduced the Czech theatres in which this genre was staged, and marked its place among other theatrical genres, taking also into consideration the period in which the Czech translations were made. French children's literature - the problems of translation.R. Goscinny: Little Nicolas

The main aim of this thesis is an introduction to reception of the youth and childrens literature (YCL) and a practical probe targeted on the readers reception of Little Nicolas by R. Goscinny and J.-J. Sempé in contemporary Czech environment. Today, fifty years after the issue of the first book of the series, Little Nicholas is already a classical work of not only the French YCL, but the worlds YCL in general. We were trying to establish how this general popularity of the book shows in an individual reading experience of one young recipient. In the first, theoretical part of the thesis (parts II to V), a brief historical overview of the YCL is introduced, particularly with regard to the Czech and French cultural areas. The present state and the tendencies of the theoretical research in the area of YCL are summarised, as well as some of the basic characteristics of its form and subject matter. Finally, the conclusion of the theoretical part of the thesis tackles the question of the reception itself. We look at it at first from a universal perspective, later we centre on some specifics of literary communication of the child recipient, in particular some approaches causing concretization of the literary text in the childs consciousness. French poetry and its Czech translations of the 1960's

This thesis, subtitled Boundaries of Poetry - Boundaries of Translation, examines the French poets who published their works in the post World War Two era. One of the aims has been to find out if these poets have been translated into Czech. The situation of the era seems to be a very special one: in the 1960's, more than 2000 poets published their poems in France; looking at Czech translation of French poetry, one may, however, get the impression that this was the era of only one French poet: Jacques Prévert. The term modern 101 poetry itself also need clarification, as it is very often associated with poets of the 19th century (e.g. Charles Baudelaire, Stéphane Mallarmé). The focus of this thesis lies on the 1960's, for several reasons: in terms of time, the decade lies quite close to present day; and yet, it still has the much desired distance, which allows for a more objective examination. The era is also special in terms of politics: the end of World War Two, the 1948 Communist Coup in Czechoslovakia, French colonial policy in Africa, and the socio-cultural upheaval and changes brought about by it, especially in 1968. Czech translations of the Stranger by A. Camus

The purpose of this paper is to carry out a detailed analysis of two existing translations into Czech of Camus's novel l'Etranger (The Stranger). The first translation by Svatopluk Kadlec was published in 1947, the newer one, by Miloslav Žilina, was first published in 1966. The position of Albert Camus among French authors is not easy to define. Although he was a recognized author, he never ceased to be a stranger among them, as he was of Algerian origin and clearly preferred his native country to France. At the same time, he could never see himself as a genuine Algerian because he was a part of the French minority having power over Algeria at the time. Camus's life is full of such contradictions. For instance, he was said to be a follower of the philosophy of existentialism, embodied by Jean-Paul Sartre, although he was rather trying to oppose this labelling. He thought of himself as an advocate of left-wing ideals he had defended by participating in the Anti-Nazi resistance but refused to accept the revolutionary principle promoted by Sartre. Many of the left-wing intellectuals were also surprised by his equivocal attitude to the Algerian war. Commented translation: Portuguese art and architecture

The work Commented Translation: Portuguese Art and Architecture consists of two main parts: the first part being a Czech translation of a part of a French travel guide about Portugal, Madeira and Azores (Brabis, D. Bosqus, N. et al. Portugal, Madre et les Açores. Paris: Michelin, 2004. p. 86 - 97), the second part being a commentary of the Czech translation and the translation process. The first part is preceded by an introduction that aims to characterize the original and to explain the reasons for choosing the text, and by a translation analysis of the original characterizing the text (and the whole book in general, too) from the exterior point of view (i.e. time and space, the recipient of the text, the functions the text may have). The different recipient, function and some other characteristics of the French original and the Czech translation are being discussed as well. This is followed by an analysis from the interior point of view (i.a. the languages occurring in the original, the kind of language used in general, the style of the text or the language functions of the text). The work Commented translation: Lace wars. Uniforms and equipment of the Household of the French King and infantry soldiers under Louis XV. and Louis XVI., and of the British and Prussian infantry in the years of 1700-1800 consists of two parts: A Czech translation of the first part of the above mentioned publication, and a commentary on this translation. The commentary concentrated on the differences between the two languages (French and Czech) and on the translating strategies ensuing from these. It describes the structure of the text (the book as well as the chosen part) and gives information on the authors and the editor. As to translation, special attention has been paid to grammatical, lexicological, terminological, stylistic and factual aspects of the translated text, cohesion and coherence as well as mistakes and unclarities. The motives for choosing the text are listed, together with reasons of the importance of its translation. A brief conclusion and bibliografy follow.
