How matching grants and their size affect behaviour and where
Caisl, Jakub ; Štika, Pavel (referee) ; Bauer, Michal (advisor)
In this work we focus on a large scale randomized field experiment described in Karlan & List(2007). Using direct mail solicitations to more than 50000 prior donors of a large U.S. non-profit organization, they examine the effects of matching grants on behaviour. They describe the effects of the matching grants in general, for the whole population, and find that matching grant size has no impact on behaviour. We use a different approach, dividing the population into subgroups by income and education and then measuring the effects of matching grant size on donating behaviour in these subgroups. We find significant heterogenity in the effects of grant size on behaviour. Also we try to apply the theory of social identity when interpreting the effects of matching grants.
The Determinants of Private Savings in the EU: The Case of the Group of Eight Entrant Countries
Amponsah, Cornelius ; Bauer, Michal (advisor) ; Holub, Tomáš (referee)
Private saving in the CEE countries can be described as having stabilised over the period of reform. Among the transition variables employed in the study, price liberalisation stands out as the most potent correlate of private saving. This is seen as a direct consequence the gradual removal of the soft budget constraint under the command system and by extension the elimination of involuntary saving. Another remarkable outcome from the GMM model is the positive response of the first lag of private saving which demonstrates persistence of savings in the CEE over the transition period. Tied to this is the strong response of private saving to sound macroeconomic discipline in the CEE countries. This is evidenced in the positive response to key variables like GDP growth and improvements in the terms of trade. Most importantly, the aged dependency ratio is seen as the most consistently strong influence on private saving. This brings to the fore the role of pension reforms in these countries and its impact on public and private funds. Effects of parental background on other-regarding preferences in children
Bauer, Michal ; Chytilová, J. ; Pertold-Gebicka, Barbara
Other-regarding preferences are central for the ability to solve collective action problems and thus for society’s welfare. We study how the formation of other-regarding preferences during childhood is related to parental background. Using binary-choice dictator games to classify subjects into other-regarding types, we find that children of less educated parents are less altruistic and more spiteful. This link is robust to controlling for a range of child, family, and peer characteristics, and is attenuated for smarter children. The results suggest that less educated parents are either less efficient to instill social norms or their children less able to acquire them.
