TITLE: The personality of the individual in the process of attaining social status - from social reproduction to identification of the sources for intergenerational upward social mobility. AUTHOR: Tereza Bariekzahyová DEPARTMENT: Department of Psychology SUPERVISOR: Doc. PhDr. Karel Hnilica, CSc. ABSTRACT: The thesis, in which the view through the sociological prism is enhanced by the lens of psychology, theoretically and empirically examines non-cognitive personality traits and characteristics ('Big Five', Self-esteem, Locus of Control, Willpower), within the context of the social and psychological aspects of attaining social status (influences by one's family, peers and teachers, and others), with a specific focus on intergenerational upward mobility and the identification of its sources. Personality traits, socialization agents in family of origin and stratification process: Self-esteem and parenting styles
Šafr, Jiří ; Bariekzahyová, Tereza
The paper focuses on personality traits, socialization in family and stratification process. Using data from the survey "Distinction and Values" (2008) which surveyed cohorts ages 30–34 along with their parents, first we identify parenting styles among families from different social classes. Second we analyze determinants of self-esteem: the strongest positive factor is parental self-esteem and democratic/authoritative parenting style, reading books during childhood and participation in extracurricular activities; while permissive/laissez-faire parenting style and poor intra-family relations limit self-esteem. Also white collars witness higher level self-confidence. What’s more, self-esteem – apart from dominant effect of parental educational aspiration and active "firm hand" parenting style – independently affects (at least in case of women) intergenerational upward mobility from working class origin.
Characteristics of the Personality and Social Mobility
Bariekzahyová, Tereza ; Šafr, Jiří
We assess differences in personality traits (extroversion, neuroticism and conscientiousness), self-esteem and locus of control among distinct types of intergenerational mobility trajectories and effect of volition at the elementary school (net of socioeconomic status and cultural capital of the family of origin) on status and specific mobility trajectories: reproduction (staying at the bottom) vs. upward mobility from working class. Datasets from representative surveys are analysed: ISSP 2009 (age 18–87) and Distinction and Values 2008 (age cohort 30–34).
