Analysis of technical efficiency of the Slovak public healthcare system since its reform in 2004
Pastva, Richard ; Babin, Jan (advisor) ; Klesla, Arnošt (referee)
The subject of this thesis is an assessment of effectiveness of the Slovak healthcare system. On basis of data provided by the OECD and using an input-oriented DEA model, it analyses the rate of technical efficiency achieved across four periods, while two of them are "before reform" and the other two are after-reform periods. This approach, besides determining the efficiency rates, helps to provide information on how the most influential healthcare reform in the era of independent Slovakia influenced the healthcare efficiency. The results of the analysis reveal above-average efficiency scores for the two pre-reform periods on one hand and some significantly below-average scores for the post-reform years on the other. Based on these results, we can judge the influence of the reform on the technical efficiency of healthcare as negative. Moreover, the attempt to verify the hypothesis of a positive influence of healthcare expenditures growth on efficiency scores was also unsuccessful. Another outcome of the analysis is the fact, that current (2011) health outcomes in Slovakia could be produced with a significantly lower volume of inputs. In conclusion, the analysis provides some of the input-minimizing suggestions, which could be made in order to increase the overall efficiency of healthcare.
The effectiveness of monetary policy during the crisis
Vávra, Stanislav ; Babin, Jan (advisor) ; Rod, Aleš (referee)
This thesis aims to empirically verify and analyze the effectiveness of monetary policy during the crisis, with a focus on inflation. It also shows the evolution of inflation and the volume of loans to non-financial corporations and households in the Czech Republic and Germany in each year. Empirical testing is set on the basis of correlation analysis. It explores the dependence between principal central bank interest rates, inflation and volume of loans to non-financial corporations and households in the Czech Republic and Germany. The results of the testing are much different in each of the countries. While in the Czech Republic, there was some effectiveness of monetary policy detected, it wasn't confirmed at all in case of Germany.
Economic processes in the virtual World of Warcraft
Varša, Marcel ; Chytilová, Helena (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis deals with analyzing of economic environment in virtual World of Warcraft. With usage of experimental method with regards to study of Stjernholm and Bedauin (2008), I am observing the hypothesis about validity of purchasing power parity, according to which I assume price equality on markets with the same conditions. In second part of my thesis, I am validating the hypothesis about possibility of individual to affect the market price in environment very similar to perfect competition, where the product is homogeneous and there is no option of substitution. In contrast with study of Dekutosky, Hopkins and Sirotek (2008) which was my pattern in this experiment, I decided to increase market price. Results of my experiments are pointing at nonenforcement of law of one price and so nullity of hypothesis about price equality and also at at confirmation of significant impact of individual on market price with usage of different approach and items as was used in previous studies on realms with the biggest representation of players from Czech Republic and Slovakia. According to results of the experiments, impossibility of individual to affect market price seems to be key factor for setting out the assumption of purchasing power parity.
Analysis of the influence of energy prices on stove saleability as an alternative source of heating
Bohumínský, Roman ; Chytilová, Helena (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
Since it is possible to observe quite stable rise in prices of energies, the question whether households are reacting by substituting the sources of energies arises. In this aspect, households can reduce their costs mainly on heating. That is why this thesis analyses the link between prices of coal, electricity, natural gas, wood (in exchange and supplier forms -- these being the independent variables) and sales of stoves which are used as dependent variable and are viewed as an alternative source of heating leading to possible cost reduction. We also calculate with the average wage, unemployment and temperature. The data source consists of time series following years 2011 and 2012 which were collected on daily basis in Czech Republic. To quantify this link, we introduce 8 different OLS estimates differing in price and properties of the stoves. We managed to verify the link between energy prices, unemployment, average wage and sales of stoves. We have found out that there is negative relation between wood and even coal prices, which are accounted as complements to stoves. Positive significant relation is present for prices of natural gas and also for the average wage. When we divided the dataset according to average price of stoves, we acquired different magnitudes of response for data obtained from stock exchange and suppliers of energies. By this division, we detected positive effect of unemployment (unfortunately slightly nonsignificant) with cheaper stoves and negative effect with more expensive ones.
Analysis of the attendance of the Czech national football team´s home matches
Strnad, Ondřej ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
This thesis investigates the effect of selected variables on the attendance of the Czech national football team's home matches in 2001--2013. The attendance in this thesis is meant as percentage fullness of the stadium. The data obtained were subjected to an econometric analysis, and the linear regression model showed determinant factors effecting match attendances. Even with the limited amount of observation and some problems which the models have, the results prove the assumption that ticket prices do not significantly effect the national team's match attendances. On the other hand, the type of match was proved to be an important determinant, with qualifying matches increasing the attendances by 13.62 %. The speculation about the significance of the opponent's attractiveness was not proved. Another variable with a significant influence on match attendances is the place where the match is played. If a match was played elsewhere than in Prague, the attendance increased by 16.92 %.
Effectivness of Legislative Novel on Procurement Contracts in Prague
Mrázek, Martin ; Babin, Jan (advisor) ; Svoboda, Miroslav (referee)
This paper is focused on impact of amendment to the Act on public procurement contracts of April 1, 2012 in Prague. Assumption that this legislative change will reduce prices of these contracts was not confirmed, at least in the first year of its application. Regression analysis shows that use of more transparent procedures included in the amendment to the Act would lead to 4 % price decline. But contracts affected by this legal change almost disappeared, probably due to manipulation with tenders. Also number of bidders has significant impact on price.
Fiscal policy of USA in current economic recession
Šiška, Martin ; Babin, Jan (advisor) ; Potužák, Pavel (referee)
Economies all around the world are currently in phase of recession and economic loss. For my study I chose United States, because here we can find beginnings of nowadays recession and also their government decided for biggest financial incentives for recovering the economy. Goal of this study is to determine the state of fiscal policy of country, which has the most advanced economy in the world and offer suggestions for their stabilization. After a brief description of the current economic situation and analysis of government spending to the growth of macroeconomic indicators in the historical context, I want to prove, if economic growth is accompanied by the serenity of fiscal policy, or has long-term instability. Object of interest is also current and extensive government spending on programs to revive the economy. Subsequent analysis of public debt and its financing, the possible consequences of debt and deficits should create a good picture of fiscal policy in the U.S. Understanding of current situation will help me to propose solutions, according to the economic theories, for stabilizing fiscal policy in case, if U.S. want to maintain world's leading economic position.
How to detect favoritism at dance competitions
Silvarová, Lenka ; Svoboda, Miroslav (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
The thesis deals with the motivation of jurors privileging some of the participants in dance competitions. It gives an overview of the dance sport and its rules, analyzes the factors that have an impact on privileging. Based on regression analysis it determines particular jurors who are not able to dismiss a connection to specific couples. Supporting analysis determines twenty-seven jurors who have different views, or prefer some couples and therefore can be suspected of favouritism. The thesis reveals that jurors, who are from the same club as couples, have a tendency to evaluate better and deviate from the average of the jurors by 0.3 to 0.4 point. It shows the significance of the "average marks of all jurors -- 2.5" and "lap of contest" variables.
Impact of alcohol consumption on academic performance of university students
Tyburcová, Iva ; Stroukal, Dominik (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the impact of alcohol consumption on academic performance of university students. This impact was examined on students studying economics at University of Economics, Prague. Dataset was obtained from students by questionnaire survey and was subsequently supplemented by official data from the university's database. Based on the theoretical model an econometric model which examines the relationship was build. The results showed that intensity of consumption of alcohol has at the 5% significance level effect on the academic results. From the research can be concluded, that the negative effects of alcohol consumption like nausea, fatigue, and headache slightly dominate. However, it is apparent that more visits to restaurant for consumption of alcohol can lower this negative effect.
To what extent does excise tax lower alcohol consumption?
Fischerová, Veronika ; Lahvička, Jiří (advisor) ; Babin, Jan (referee)
This work considers the influence of excise tax on alcohol and the consumption of various kinds of alcoholic beverages. The focus is an area of the European Union between the years 1990-2009. The analysis uses fixed effects and first differencing. The results show that the growth in tax on spirits of 36 euros from the minimum (3 euros) to the maximum rate (39 euros) leads to a decrease in consumption of spirits by 24% and consumption of ethyl alcohol by 10%. If the intermediate products tax of 5 euros grows from the minimum rate (0 euro) to the maximum rate (5 euros), the consumption of ethyl alcohol will decrease by 12% and consumption of spirits by 21%. The growth in tax on wine of 5 euros from a minimum rate (0 euro) to the maximum rate (5 euros) leads to a decline in consumption of wine by 8.4%. The growth in tax on beer of 3 euros from a minimum rate (0 euro) to the maximum rate (3 euros) leads to an increase in consumption of spirits by 6.8% and consumption of wine by 86%, which means that spirits and beer and wine and beer are substitutes. The growth in real GDP per capita of 4100 euros leads to increased consumption of different types of alcoholic beverages by 3,7-9%.
