The aim of this thesis is to translate a chapter from the book Immigrant Experiences: Personal Narrative and Psychological Analysis and to carry out a translation analysis of this translation. The commentary on the translation is divided into four parts. The first part deals with the translation analysis focused on the extratextual and intratextual factors of the source text. The second part contains a typology of translation problems at the grammatical, syntactic, lexical, stylistic and cultural levels. The third part concentrates on the shifts that occurred in the translation and the forth part on the translation method used in the work.

Comparison of students' performance at the beginning and upon completion of their simultaneous interpretation training course

The main aim of the thesis is to determine,~ whether there may be a relationship between the capacity of working memor)Lfc,and the skill of interpreting features of modality in a text. Based on this aim, the basic concepts determining the approach to the above question are outlined (working memory, modality). An experiment is conducted on a population of nine subjects. The experiment investigates the development of working memory capacity (memory span test), and the skill to interpret features of modality during the course of interpretation studies (simultaneous interpretation of and English text with high occurrence of features of modality). Based on an analysis, evaluation, and statistical processing of the experimental results, the thesis determines that working memory capacity, and the ability to interpret features of modality may be related.

Sight translation - double transfer

In this thesis we addressed the subject of sight translation. This special type of interpreting is often not given adequate academic attention even though it can be considered one of the most difficult exercises due to its dichotomic character. Sight translation is not mere transfer from one language to another, it is also transfer from written mode to oral mode. The most important characteristics, as well as the largest area of differentiation, of written and oral texts is syntax. Therefore, we centred our research on this issue. Our research is qualitative, with no hypothesis. We merely describe the situation in sight translation from English into Czech. We chose non-participant observation as the method of our research, thus decreasing the number of variables. The observation took place from January 2006 to September 2007 during State Final Exams at the Department of Translation Studies of the Charles University in Prague. All students specialized in interpreting. The empirical material consists of 13 original texts, 13 interpreters' renditions and 4 official translations that were available on official websites of the relevant institutions. This thesis attempts to explore the role of the translator's gender in the two translations of D. H. Lawrence's novel Lacfy Chatterlry's Lover. Within the limited context of an M.A. thesis, the writer submits the following: 1. A biography of D. H. Lawrence and a short overv1ew and periodization of his extensive work. 2. An exploration of the position of D.H. Lawrence among his contemporaries together with an attempt to determine his position in the context of the modernist movement and other literary streams and of his life and of the previous epoch. 3. A short overview of D. H. Lawrence's individual philosophy, his attitude to and understanding of women and men women relationships and the reflection of these views in Lawrence's work. An exploration of Lawrence's fiction of women and his fiction woman's experience of physical love is included. 4. An overview of the genesis of D. H. Lawrence's novel Lacfy Chatteriry'J Lover, including a factual appraisal of previous versions and an account of its content. Commented translation: Learning to live together

The aim of this thesis is to provide a translation of a section from Philippe Legrain's lmmigrants: Your Country Needs Them and a commentary of the translation. The commentary contains four parts. The first part is a translation analysis, which consists of an analysis of extratextual and intratextual factors and describes the specific qualities of the source text. The second part provides a typology of translation problems, describing linguistic and cultural non-equivalence and defending the translator's solutions. The third part is a typology of shifts occuring in the translation. The commentary is concluded by the description of the translation method.

Pragmatic motivation of cliché from the point of view of an interpreter

This thesis offers a comparison of the research of clichés in three languages: English, Czech and Russian. Clichés are just one possible manifestation of how speech can be automatized and syntactic structures that can be reproduced and identified are created. This complex phenomenon must be studied through the prism of lexicology, stylistics and pragmatics. Understanding and interpretation of this phenomenon differs depending on linguistic schools and single authors, some linguists hold a negative opinion of clichés, some believe that in certain types of discourse clichés are necessary. There is no unified definition of a cliché either. This thesis is focused on clichés in political discourse where the pragmatic dimension of clichés and their functions in relation to users, both politicians and their listeners, is studied. Clichés are a prominent stylistic element which may have a significant impact on the work of an interpreter. This is why the empirical part is aimed at clichés from the interpreter's perspective. An experiment involving 14 professional intepreters is set up in order to study their attitude towards clichés.

Connection between notation and quality of consecutive interpretation

The topic of notation, an important tool used in the process of consecutive interpretation, is discussed primarily in prescriptive works. Claiming that notes are a significant back-up for the interpreter's memory, the works suggest several principles that interpreters should observe in order to produce an optimal piece of notation. Nevertheless, detailed studies analyzing the influence of notes on the interpreter's performance are scarce. Many specialists have an unfavourable opinion of the possibility of an objective evaluation of interpretation quality; on the other hand, the interpreters' performance is subjected to day-by-day assessment by the market. In this area of research, it is difficult to carry out experiments and evaluation because of the small size of samples, unauthentic laboratory conditions and the individua! nature of both the notation and performance.

Simultaneous interpreting using a paper copy of the speech with a focus on "paper copy of the speech" and "subjectivity" as the two major variables

This theoretical-empirical work is focused on the dependence between the variables "paper copy of the speech" and "subjectivity" in simultaneous interpreting. In the theoretical part of this thesis, the hitherto research in this field has been covered and the explored questions ha ve been categorized within the paradigm of translation studies. Within the framework of the translational model by Heidemarie Salevsky, an attempt was made to identify and confine the major variables that occur in simultaneous interpreting with a paper copy ofthe speech. Then, based on past research on this subject, a detailed description was made ofthe factors paper and subjectivity. In addition, a categorization ofthe types of subjectivity was made for the analysis of the individua! papers. In the empirical part of this work, based on the available knowledge of the main factors and on the analysis of all speeches, a hypothesis was formulated on the dependence between the factors paper and subjectivity for the individua! speeches and for all speeches jointly.
