Mags in Dresses Playing Strategies of Female Players Confronted with Hegemonic Masculinity in MMORPG
Bareš, Pavel ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Pospíšilová, Marie (referee)
This paper explores the manifestations of the hegemonic masculinity and gender hierarchy discourse in the environment of MMORPGs and the playing strategies used by female players to react to these manifestations. The main goal of the research was to identify these strategies and analyse them using the hegemonic masculinity theory. For this purpose a series of qualitative interviews with experienced female MMORPGs players have been conducted and by analysing these, 4 strategies have been identified: resistance (challenging the discourse), fulfilling (fortifying the discourse on purpose), resignation (giving in to the discourse) and avoiding (using the game mechanics to escape the female role and related influences of the discourse). This paper therefore introduces 4 hypothetical patterns of behaviour of MMORPG female players who are confronted with manifestations of hegemonic masculinity and shows that the theoretical background of this theory is suitable for tackling the topic of gender inequality within videogame worlds.
Immigration to Facebook Virtual Community and the Impact on Prague Offline Relationships
Bakalářová, Jana ; Máchová, Eva (advisor) ; Švelch, Jaroslav (referee)
These days old-fashioned ways of developing and maintaining relationships suffer from the fast-growing CMC communication. Following this does this evolution of computer-mediated communication have an influence on social relationships, friendships and user behavior? This thesis examines how strongly can social media influence people, their cultural identity and online/offline bonds. The thesis is mainly focused on Facebook social network, which currently brings together more than a billion people. My work is based on three hypotheses and my aim is to confirm or disprove whether people consciously dissemble and show better me than fact, whether our behaviour online has an affect on offline relationships in terms of weakening ties, and whether the Facebook relationships have weaker ties than traditional offline relationships. This thesis will be based on a survey of at least 400 people from Prague regarding their use of Facebook to form and maintain relationships. The questionnaire survey is based on the theories of CMC created by theorist Christian Fuchs in his publication Internet and Society: Social Theory in the Information Age published in 2008.
Slow journalism and its Czech manifestations on the example of the Reporter magazine
Burian, Jakub ; Hájek, Roman (advisor) ; Švelch, Jaroslav (referee)
Slow journalism is a trend that stands against the current forms of journalism. It doesn't need to get the stunning and sensational news first. Instead, it puts information into perspective, offers deeper insight into the aspects of journalism and carefully crafts the contents of each issue. The concept of slow journalism is attracting more followers still and all the new press emerging especially abroad can be considered a proof of this trend. This bachelor thesis first offers a short insight into the history of journalism and analyzes the current media environment which is influenced mainly by advances in technology. Subsequently, this thesis introduces the concept of slow journalism as a trend that diverges from the current fragmentary and abbreviating journalism and returns to the roots of the traditional journalism itself. In the next part of this thesis its main characteristics are introduced as well as the most important representatives of slow journalism abroad. The last part of the thesis describes the origins and business operations of the Czech magazine Reporter which has been established in 2014 by the former editor in chief of MF DNES Robert Čásenský, with whom also a few of his former colleagues joined the magazine. The aim of this thesis is to show the aspects of slow journalism...
Death in the media discourse: the case of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane
Brezík, František ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Hladík, Radim (referee)
The diploma thesis "Death in media discourse: the case of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane" inquires into the case of the disappeared flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The flight has been mapped in Czech press as well as online newspapers from the perspective of death based on a subjectively composed qualitative method of grounded theory and discourse analysis. In the unprecedented tragical event, death is being constructed in a specific way in the context of media discourse. Hence, the allegoric character of epistemology and constructivist paradigm plays an important role here. The theoretic reflection describes the context of the relation between media and the topic of death. The abundance of topics in media associated with death is considered a symptom of a particular demand from society. The media increase the general tolerance towards images of death and violence, thus impacting character of such displays. In the reflection of the mental background, the character of perceiving death in a secularised society is denoted as metaphorical. In the research part of the thesis, discursive patterns are introduced. From them, we may understand what values associated with death are socially important and in what way does death appear and construct itself in the media. What is important here...
New media gathering users data and the attitude of users towards internet security: qualitative study
Laube, David ; Švelch, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Karaščáková, Zuzana (referee)
The theoretical part of the thesis analyzes the topic of new media and how it works with the privacy of its users. On the examples of applications such as Facebook, or Google services, I refer to the intensive and extensive kind of private information, that are stored on the provider's servers. All these data are not just gathered, but also analyzed and evaluated. Private companies use data of its users in such extension like never before. New media and their activities raises new questions about possible misuse of such data. In this thesis I mention a few examples that are somehow related to the topic of privacy and personal data protection. In the practical part I use the tools of qualitative research to explore how the issue of online privacy and data security is perceived by different user groups and how they explain their behavior. I examined whether the privacy issue is an important one and if their online activity in this context is somehow particularly regulated or restricted. For research I chose two groups of respondents - younger users up to 37 years of age and older aged 55 +. I get information from the respondents in the form of semi-structured interview. These were analyzed and I created new conclusions from it.
