Not like us. The social marginalization and integration of minorities in the Czech borderlands while "building the new order" (1945-1960)
Spurný, Matěj ; Štaif, Jiří (advisor) ; Pavelčíková, Nina (referee) ; Brenner, Christiane (referee)
This work considers the changing attitudes of Czech society and its political élite towards minorities in the restored nation-state of Czechoslovakia after the Second World War and in the period of the coming to power of the Czechoslovak Communist Party and the stabilization of its dictatorship. To this end, it examines three very heterogeneous minority groups: the ethnic Germans remaining after the expulsions, the Gypsies (Roma), and the Volhynian Czechs. The Czech borderlands (former Sudetenland) were a distinctive space; the processes that took place there are analysed in detail in this work. The discourses and the strategies of legitimation, as well as conflicts and negotiations at the local level, are considered in particular. The aim of the work is to reveal the ideological starting points that the key political actors turned into concrete political aims and the influence that they had on specific events in the border areas, and also the influence that the thinking and notions of local actors had on the transformation of policy and even ideology. Consequently, the work presents a vivid picture of the often ambiguous attitudes amongst the individual components of the Party and State apparat (the senior leadership of the Communist Party, the individual ministries, and the regional and local...

Zimmerhaklová, Hana ; Štaif, Jiří (advisor) ; Pokorná, Magdaléna (referee) ; Blümlová, Dagmar (referee)
Resume The thesis deals with the Estates Theatre in Prague and its social context from 1798 to 1888. We can find the interaction (between theatre and society) in the theatre program obviously. Therefore, the research was primarily focused on analysis of the repertoire. These probes can help to understand the mentality of the viewer and its change during watched time. In order to solve this problem, it is necessary to work with the relevant theoretical concepts explaining the creation of interaction between stage and auditorium. This background was found in the field of sociology and cultural studies. The thesis is divided into four chapters. They are concerned to the specifying of influence on the program formation at first. A crucial role in this process was played by the directors who rented the theatre. Hence, the essential parts of work are concerned with the personalities of single directors (with their praxis, strategies etc.). Furthermore, other important parts of the thesis are repertoire analyzes of single periods. These sections highlight the various genres and their relationship to the society. In the first half of the 19th century, we meet with the cardinal phenomenon - a tragedy and comedy of middle-class (bourgeoisie) environment. These features involved the important elements illustrating the...
Outer factors influencing image creation of the USSR in Czechoslovakia between World Wars
Lomíček, Jan ; Jančík, Drahomír (referee) ; Štaif, Jiří (advisor)
There were several outer aspects influencing the image of Soviet Russia in Czechoslovakia between World Wars. On the one hand it was Soviet propaganda using all possible means at that time to create abroad a positive image of SSSR. On the other hand, there were various control mechanisms and institutions monitoring foreigners in the Soviet territory. It was VOKS (The All- Union Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries ) and the Soviet state travel agency Intourist, to name the most significant of them. The amount of places the visitors were able to visit was limited, just as the available information and that is why the reality shown in their literary works was distorted. The writers who tried to present an objective description of the situation in the Soviet Union were often dependent on theoretical information without the possibility to verify their theories in practice. A significant number of leftwing intelectuals considered the dictatorship of the proletariat to be a political vanguard. They sticked to these beliefs because they did not have any opportunity to discover the real consequences of Bolshevik government on the people in the Soviet Union.

The first chapter explains the political situation and demographical changes in Pardubice in the second half of the 19th century. The second chapter deals with the topic of communal elections. There have been eleven elections to the communal self-government during the tracked period. We have been able (thanks to the acquired results of the elections) to find that the electoral right has increased because of the pressure from minor political parties. Only 15% percent of inhabitants could vote the communal vestry in the prewar period because of the unfair election right. The majority of voters of the first congregation was represented by the members of the so called "honoration". The third chapter has shown the changes in the social structure of the self government of Pardubice. Comparatively stable and active component were the members of the artes liberales. The highest increase in the number of representatives was in the state bureaucracy. The fourth part focuses on the political development in the field of struggle for the directorial positions in the municipality. The fifth part deals with management of local self goverment of Pardubice and construction of the modern...
Social life of the Germans, Czechs and Jews in Podmokly (Bodenbach) 1848-1918
Z hlediska národnostního, náboženského i sociálního se zde vytvořila pestrá směs, jež se dynamicky vyvíjela až do osudového roku 1938. Pokusím se v hrubých obrysech načrtnout obraz Děčínska a historický vývoj Děčína, následně přiblížím historický a hospodářský vývoj Podmokel a poukáži na...
