Raymond Queneau and his novel Blue Flowers. Translation of one type of French experimental prose
Sauerová, Klaudia ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee)
Raymond Queneau's novel s ha ve been translated in to Czech since the 60's of the 20th century. This work focuses on two of hi s novels, typical of their experimentalism: Zazie in the Metro and The Blue Flowers. A stylistic analysis of the original text showed different aspects of Queneau's poetics and also difficulties faced by a translator. Unusually rich means of expression, such as puns and neologisms at the lexical level, changing of stylistic layers or new French - handwriting created by the author to draw nearer spoken and written language, intertextuality and mathematical structures incorporated into the composition of the novel s are typ i cal features of Queneau' s work. We examined possibilities of Czech while translating Queneau's language experiments by comparing translations of two Queneau's novels, do ne by two different translators. Our work concentrates mainly on problems with translating puns, neologisms, phraseology, and new French. Jiri Pelikan 's trans lati on of the novel The Blue Flowers proved that in spite of some divergences between the original and the target text (archaization of verba dicendi, compensation), it is, on the whole, possible to keep to the author' s complex poetics, and to create, within the given scope, a work of translation that can compare with the original. French-Arab literature in the Czech translations
Ondrušková, Marie ; Belisová, Šárka (referee) ; Šotolová, Jovanka (advisor)
The to pic i s divided in to two parts: the theoretical part comprises characteristics of Arabic francophone authors and the cultural background that they come from. The thesis constitutes an elementary database of the most important Arabic authors and their works, giving considerable attention to the controversial issue of works written by Maghrebian women authors, as well as to current problems of the Islamic world. Among the most important authors, who enrich the literature of the world and contribute also to the literary science, we could mention Assia Djebar (specialized in the comparative literature, teaches at the University of New York), Tahar Ben Jelloun, who writes about blending of cultures and necessity of peaceful coexistence, etc. The French cultural policy creates optimum conditions for Arabic francophone authors, who thus never fail to bring profit to their publishers.
Comparison of two Czech translations of Rousseou's "Les Rêveries du promeneur solitaire"
Šaušová, Eva ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee) ; Králová, Jana (advisor)
The dissertation aims at comparing the two existing translations of Jean-Jacques Rousseau' s Les Reveries du promeneur solitaire - translation by Karel Šafář in the edition of 1962 and that by Eva Berková of 2002. The theoretical part looks at historical context within which the translations were created and briefly compares the first edition of 1913 with the edition issued in 1962. The comparison itself opens with a thorough analysis of means of expression which verbalize feelings the author experienced on his walks and offer a doser look at his state of mind at the point when he was writing his work. The analysis served as a basis for comparison of excerpts taken from both translations, the emphasis being laid on accuracy in translation, particularly that of key words, translation of figurative expressions and important semantic fields, degree of closeness to the sentence structures and grammatical categories of the original as well as on delivery of the rhythm and euphonic means, omissions, and cases whereby the meaning shifted. The strategy applied to translation of historical facts and context i s also mentioned.
Germinie Lacerteux in Czech translations
Kinská, Jana ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee) ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor)
The aim of this thesis has been to create a comparative critical analysis of the two Czech translations of the French novel called Germinie Lacerteux by the Goncourt brothers, written in 1865. The first part of the thesis contains detailed information on the life and works of Edmond (1822 - 1896) and Jules de Goncourt (1830 - 1870) as well as an outline on a wider historical and literary context of their works, with a remark on their activities in other fields, such as art, literary criticism or history, as well as their legacy of the Goncourt Academy. Particular attention has been paid to their journal, Journal : mémoires de la vie littéraire, which, embracing 45 years (1851 - 1896), comprises their experience in the literary and art circles as well as other observations, and represents a valuable source illustrating their period. A position of the unique couple of writers in French realism is defined here and a particular stress is put on their pioneer role in the emerging naturalism. This movement was associated with specific methods of creations, mainly based on the collection of documents and notes from different social environments. This chapter is followed by a part dedicated to the reception of the novel analyzed in France, where its argot and depiction of the lowest classes met, on the one hand,...
Negative humanism of Michel Houellebecq
Villiers de l'Isle-Adam: Cruel tales in Czech translations
Folberová, Jana ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee) ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor)
The aim of this diploma thesis has been to analyse four existing Czech translations of Cruel Tales by Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, a French writer from the latter half of the nineteenth century, while also putting this author into a cultural and historical context, and so characterise his work. The thesis has been divided into three chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the writer's personality, his work and the complex historical period during which he lived and wrote. The reverberations of his work, including Cruel Tales, both in his local and the Czech environment are also dealt with in this chapter. The second chapter closely examines Villiers' most important collection of short stories - Cruel Tales. We start by determining its themes, storylines and characters, then we continue to analyze Villiers' specific style in the selected excerpts. We finish with the conclusion that the author has a style similar to Charles Baudelaire or Guy de Maupassant, however, Villiers never knew such success and glory, nor received the acclaim of his peers, something we hope that our thesis will be a contribution towards in helping to raise new interest in this exceptional French writer.
Translation of the biblical exegesis based on the home standards
Křivohlavá, Kateřina ; Šotolová, Jovanka (referee) ; Belisová, Šárka (advisor)
The original text of the bible is at any time the starting point of a translation of any biblical passage in the contemporary living language. A science called exegesis tries to discover the meaning of this original text. The results of this exegesis are afterwards the basic material of a translation in any language. They are really international. There is a long history of the translation of the exegetic meanings in a language. So is it as well in the czech language. These tranlations have built a codified version using a terminology influenced not only by the exegetic meaning but as well by the biblical theology and concepts living at the time of the translation. They are the results of the translational tradition and have ties to the given national language and culture. /;· The second fact that has to be respected by any modern traslation (the traditional versions) makes any attempt of a new translation of a biblical text difficult. The respect to the cannonical version and the already established biblical terminology influence the work of any translator. Thanks to it biases have to be overcommed born in the disagreements between the deeper exegesitic understanding and the already used and established biblical version. The knowledge both of the intettextuality of the original meaning exegetically...
French Drama in Czech Translation after 1989
Šimpachová, Iveta ; Šotolová, Jovanka (advisor) ; Brunel, Aude (referee)
The Master's thesis provides an analytic overview of translated dramatic texts from French to Czech after 1989. It focuses on the proportional representation of contemporary plays as well as on translators' work. The first part of the thesis gives a brief idea of contemporary French dramatic art and points out different expectations of French theatre spectators and readers in comparaison with the Czech ones. Subsequently, the specificity of drama translation and the role of translator in drama translation process is clarified according to existing theories. The main part focuses on analysis of list of the Czech translations created between 1990 and 2015 that are available to the public. As expected, drama publishing shows marginal and decreasing tendency and the majority of published authors are represented by classics. In general, contemporary texts prevail among theatre agency translations, most of which are represented by comedy plays. However individual efforts and projects help to broaden the image of French contemporary drama. Individual interviews with translators and publishers enrich the analysis with experience from professional practice. Key words: contemporary French drama, drama translation, dramatic text, role of translator, sociology of translation, translation production, drama...
Czech perception of Claudel's Break of Noon
Dvořáková, Tereza ; Šotolová, Jovanka (advisor) ; Belisová, Šárka (referee)
The master's thesis focuses on a translatological analysis of the original text and two available translations of the Break of Noon, a play written by a significant French playwright and diplomat Paul Claudel. Miloš Marten was the first to translate the play into Czech in 1910. The second translation was done by Vladimír Mikeš and was published in 2012. Given the time span of more than a hundred years between the translations, it is not only interesting to compare them linguistically but also to make a comparison of their reception. Therefore, the thesis deals with the reception of the texts and its development over time. The thesis defines Paul Claudel's place in French culture in the past and today and how its play is perceived in the Czech context. The thesis studies the position of the first translation in the time of its publishing and right after it. The thesis seeks to determine the reasons for the second translation to be commissioned and assess the position of the new text in the target culture. To determine the position of the translations in the Czech context and their potential effect on the culture, the thesis uses the polysystem theory which seems to be the most convenient tool as it studies to what extent translation literature affects domestic literature.
