Comparing commemorations of semicentennial and centennial anniversary of Easter rising

The aim of this work is to compare the two most important commemorations (semicentennial and centennial) organized to commemorate the Easter Rising. The first chapter introduces the concept of collective memory as well as some interpretations of this concept by various authors. The concept of collective memory and memory of space is crucial for this work, because commemorations are analyzed using these two concepts. This chapter also introduces research criteria that are later used to compare commemorations. These categories include the identity of the organizers, the geopolitical situation of the Republic of Ireland prior to commemoration, and the building of memorials and memory sites in connection with the Easter Rising. The following two chapters analyze specific commemorations and compare similarities and differences according to predetermined research criteria. Although there are some similarities between the two commemorations and there are many, these commemorations are totally different from each other, especially because of the consequences. The analysis of framing as part of the EU's actorness: Case of Poland's climate politics

The main topic of this bachelor thesis is actorness of the European Union in climate politics. Concept of EU actorness is quite popular in social sciences since 1970s. That is because EU is not a typical political entity a therefore her conceptualization became challenging for some. The result of this long lasting dispute was recognizing the EU as a unique entity of its own, the so called entity sui generis. This paper is therefore based on a theoretical model developed by Petr Kratochvíl (2013) in his book The EU as a political actor. The analysis of four dimensions of EU's actorness. In the book, Kratochvíl introduces four dimensions by which we can measure the scale of EU's actorness in chosen area. Those are: recognition, attractiveness, internal legitimacy and framing. For the purpose of this paper, the dimension of framing was chosen, as it enables us to analysis EU's ability to frame the internal debate in its member states. For the EU to be a successful framing actor, the member state has to 1) consider the EU as a main actor in the given area, 2) discuss the same topics and 3) consider the same solutions as the EU. Attitudes of the European "Five" Towards the First British Application to the European Economic Community

This thesis deals with the period from British application to the European Economic Community until its dismissal by French veto while it aims on all member states of European communities excluding France. The aim of this thesis is to determine whether there was an opinion homogeneity inside European Economic Community during negotiating the British application, to which extent were the states in their advancements in accord and more whether their steps had some real effect on the given situation. This thesis is summarizing study, which uses comparative analysis. The first part introduces the period of 60s in the European integration. The second part deals with introduction of individual states, their interests and undergone steps. The third part comes to answering the research question and concludes ascertained facts. On the basis of discovered facts this thesis comes to the conclusion that the opinion homogeneity was not omnipresent but it showed only in elemental questions, underneath these opinions differed. Some states made some effort to remedy the French veto, however in consequences it had no chance to success because it was blocked by person of Konrad Adenauer.

Limits of Europeanisation in Turkey: The Potential Relation between Economic Policy and Foreign Policy towards the EU

This diploma thesis deals with the Europeanisation of the third states and its limits. The thesis is a one-case study focusing on Turkey and Europeanisation of its foreign policy. Foreign Policy Analysis has been chosen as the research method. The method focuses on economic relations between Turkey and the EU and other subjects and searches for potential correlation with foreign policy making process. At first, the thesis researches the historical context of the relations of the EU and Turkey, describes the governing party AKP and analyses the changes in foreign policy. Economic relations are presented by Turkish exports and imports and inward and outward foreign direct investments. At the beginning of its government, the AKP party put a lot of effort to Europeanisation of the country in matter of reforms which brought better legislation and increase of FDI, but also mutual trade with the EU. During the years, fluctuations in mutual relations appeared but these did not have any significant influence on the political relations. As well as deterioration in political relations did not influence mutual trade. The EU is still the most important trade partner of Turkey despite the fluctuations. If a turn away the EU should have come, the motives would come most probably from internal politics...

Violation of Human Rights on the West Bank and Its Reflection in the European Union

This thesis deals with foreign policy of European Union towards Israel considering the violation of human rights on the West Bank territory. Israel, while occupying this territory, violates some parts of international humanitarian law, namely Geneva Conventions. Eventhough European Union declares respect for human rights and claim to be its distributor, EU cooperate with Israel on many different levels. This thesis works with concept Normative power by Ian Manners and Legitimizing power by Anders Persson to analyze how European Union deals with Israeli violation of human rights and how did it project it into their relation between 2005 and 2015.

Human rights dialogue between regional organisations: case study EU-ASEAN

This bachelor thesis deals with human rights dialogue between European Union and Association of South East Asian Nations. It approaches the subject in the context of interregionalism and it aims to answer the question of whether a different membership concept in these regional organisations presents an obstacle to mutual human rights dialogue. While the values of human rights and democracy are a prerequisite for membership in the EU and also a part of its identity, ASEAN does not require any such conditions from its members. There is also a difference in the concept of national sovereignty or the process of socialisation of member states in these organisations. By describing specific examples of East Timor and Myanmar, the paper shows different reactions of EU and ASEAN to human rights violations in these countries. Furthermore, by analysing joint documents from the ASEAN-EU ministerial meetings, the thesis recapitulates the course of human rights dialogue between the organisations from the 1990s to the present day and shows the disagreements that have occurred during this period. The thesis then concludes that the human rights dialogue did not make a significant progress during this period also due to a fundamentally different membership concept in these regional organisations.

Comparison of the opinions of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic on the concept of multi-speed EU and its development until the Rome Summit 2017

This bachelor thesis deals with the concept of multi-speed European Union, meaning different integration of each member state, as a possible scenario of the future structure of the EU. I focus on the attitude of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic to the differentiated integration into the EU. Germany was keen on the vision of the united European system at the beginning but developed an alternative stance of potential participation on differentiation later. Eastern states (mainly Poland) were advancing equal partnership above all because of the fear of deepening the differences and getting aside of mainstream of interests. The Czech Republic, on contrary, inclined to the division - the Eurosceptic embraced the idea of being out of the centre of the EU. However, this concept was not finished and faced many obstacles. Nevertheless, the consequences of some recent affairs might have changed the public opinion and the idea of establishing multi-speed European Union might be renewed. Germany is in the middle of negotiation with some European countries in order to deepen the cooperation within the full concentration on keeping the function of the EU. Copyright in the European Union: Influence of Interest Groups during the Creation of the Collective Rights Management Directive

The master's thesis focuses on the influence of interest groups during the creation of the 2012 Proposal for a Directive on collective rights management. In particular, the thesis deals with the pre-legislative phase of the legislative process, which began in April 2004. The theoretical framework includes conceptualization of interest groups, lobbying and influence. The mechanisms of influence are analysed using two theories - rational choice theory and rational choice institutionalism. The thesis utilizes process tracing - theory testing as a main methodological approach. Empirical evidence is investigated by analysing primary sources. The main subjects of the analysis are the most relevant documents from the European Commission concerning the pre-legislative phase. Four semi-structured interviews with selected relevant actors were also conducted. The thesis concludes by confirming/ disproving of the main hypothesis: Specific interest groups succeeded in influencing the text of the proposal for a directive on the collective management of copyright.

ESA - A Hindrance for Further Supranationalization?

The aim of this masters thesis is to assess the relation between two organizations with competences towards the European space policy that happen to be in dispute over these competences - the European Union (EU) and the European Space Agency (ESA). The main research question asks whether the ESA hinders further supranationalization of the space matters within the EU framework and the research uses the lenses of the theory of the rational design which highlights the importance of the Member States as the decisive actors in this question who have to incline one way or the other. This thesis examines relevant documents issued by the EU and the ESA, as well as at the positions of the Member States of the European Space Agency with regard to this dispute, and concludes that the ESA indeed hinders further supranationalization of the space matters within the EU framework because it goes against the positions and interests of the Member States. The hindrance reaches the level that the only thing the Member States are willing to do is to adjust the financial procedures in respect to the programmes run by ESA and funded by the EU to ensure their efficient implementation complying with EU rules.
