Political communication and marketing - Elections 2010
Krajíčková, Zuzana ; Šebesta, Karel (advisor) ; Adam, Robert (referee)
My thesis deals with political advertising and the means used in the pre-election campaign to The Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic in 2010. It specially focuses on the five political parties that gained mandates in this election (i.e.Social Democratic Party of the Czech Republic, Civic Democratic Party, TOP 09, The Communist Party of the Czech Republic,VV). As the theoretical background I tried to define the strategies of political marketing and the means of political advertising used in the campaign. The thesis further mainly focuses on the practical application of the theoretical part on the advertising of individual political parties. The thesis is based on the analysis of the theoretical sources that specialise in political marketing and advertising. The linguistic and visual aspects of advertising are also taken into tonsideration which issue is dealt with on the basis of several secondary texts focused on this area. Internet (photograph databases of billboards on Facebook, web pages of individual political parties) and printed material used by the political parties during the pre-election campaign (advertising in newspapers), all served as useful and important sources for my thesis.
Perception of verbal irony in Czech
Pospíšilová, Dominika ; Šebesta, Karel (advisor) ; Vaňková, Irena (referee)
This paper explores perception of discourse irony in Czech - how can irony affect Czech adults and teenagers, their definition of it and what are the differences between irony in Czech and in English. The inspiration for my paper was a cross-cultural study of comprehension of sarcasm in Czech and Canadian children in which I was concerned and which revealed that Czech children understand sarcasm somehow sooner than Canadian children. My paper focuses on two experiments I did with Czech adults for purposes of the cross-cultural study, in which adults were just the control group, and on following experiment with Czech teenagers, who weren't included in the study at all. The first experiment (the preliminary stage of the cross-cultural study) showed the approach of Czech adults to the forms of irony used in the cross-cultural study and what the term irony means to them. The second experiment confirmed appreciable differences in perception of social-communicative aspects of irony (pleasantness, unpleasantness, wittiness) between Czech and Canadian adults - the Czechs feel irony much more negative than the Canadians do. The third experiment was with fifteen-year-old Czech students and it pointed out that although their language skills are in principle comparable with those of adults, in the case of irony...

Czech language at Deutsche Schule Prag
Kubů, Helena ; Šebesta, Karel (advisor) ; Uličný, Oldřich (referee)
I have analysed the education conception of the subject Czech as a foreign language at the elementary school Deutsche Schule Prag (German School in Prague) and subsequently I have researched character of usage and interference deformations of Czech language in written communication by German speaking pupils. The complex illustration of teaching, its aims, contents and methods can serve other pedagogues as a source of inspiration and simultaneously the methodical instruction, how to teach foreign languages. The conception of Deutsche Schule Prag is highly valued for several aspects. At first, the school respects a natural cognitive progress of pupils in their education model, therefore selects adequate teaching methods, aims, contents and types of exercises in consideration of the pupil' s age and its cognitive ski11s. Primarily poses c1aims corresponding with children's possibilities and also with norms of Common European Pramework: Learning, Teaching, Assessment (CEF). Secondly emphasises often neglected communication character of language in the c1asswork. Pupils do not leam language components apart and without context. On the contrary they acquire complex conversation situations and phrases of foreign language in order to be able to communicate verbally and in writing at the soonest. Thirdly, in the...

Kadlecová, Kateřina ; Šebesta, Karel (advisor) ; Vaňková, Irena (referee)
This study deals with language and ideology in girls' magazines BravoGIRL!, COSMOgirl!, Dívka (Girl) and Top dívky (Top Girls). It describes the position ofthese three monthlies and one semi-monthly on the Czech media market and then it focuses at the content and specific genres ofthese magazines (namely, photostories). The linguistic analysis ofthe used language and style follows; the expressivity and emotionality of the so called genderlect and especially of the girls' speech (and a speech meant for girls) and the tendenci es towards enriching the lexicon of these magazines with anglicisms, neologisms, occasionalisms and slang are exemplified. It is also explained why intertextuality becomes so rare in the texts. In addition, I offer results of a questionnaire (50 enquirees), which uses both qualitative and quantitative (evaluated by the SPSS software) methods. It reveals how much the girls, potential inforrnants of the media messages, perceive the language of those magazines which is made to be and pretends to be their own sociolect. The ability to understand the text is questioned here, and so are the acceptation of profane language and so-called smileys, interest in topics offered and subjective evaluating of the gir1s' magazines with both rejecting and supporting the reasons for reading them. The last...
