Bulvarization of Bussiness Weaklies
Jannová, Martina ; Řehořová, Irena (advisor) ; Poštulka, Filip (referee)
Today's audience tends to focus increasingly on popular media and on sensational and entertaining ways of media communication. Many authors describe present media culture as popular. There is a significant merge of information and entertainment known as infotainment: the entertaining news. Television practices model this trend, permeating widely into other media. Simultaneously, there is a slump in printed media caused by the quick entrance and fast spread of electronic media, especially the Internet and television. Both these circumstances are integrated in this thesis as well as in real world of periodical publishers. By making their titles more popular, the publishers of print media are trying to fight against sales decreases affecting the majority of reputable newspapers, weeklies and monthlies by making their titles more popular. The key sign of this popularization is a constant effort to increase both the semantic and the visual attractiveness of the periodicals. Consequently, it also causes higher uniformity of printed titles and a homogenization across this entire field: the printed media increasingly submit to its audience. The way of selecting and processing the information is almost identical, with the repetitive usage of well-tried and popular type of news.

The diploma thesis The Intermediality of Signs in Electronic Communication: the Use of Emoticon as New Means of Expression provides the medial and semiotic view of electronic communication as non-verbal means of expression. In addition to that, it also tries to reveal its specific features. The diploma thesis presents emoticon not only as a feature of the Internet but it also refers to its intermedial dimension which is apparent in printed media. The purpose of the research is firstly set into the broader thematic context to familiarize the reader with the character of the Internet setting. Furthermore, he/she gets a summary of medial and sign conceptions. In the practical part the knowledge is applied when analyzing individual extracts which prove the intermediality of emoticon. The sign is presented in a magazine, comic, book and commercial where the unifying and different tendencies in its function are discovered on the basis of the medial opposition the Internet - press. The extracts reveal an emotional sign as original means of expression. On the other hand, they repeatedly present it as a stereotypically used myth. On the basis of this thesis the reader learns more about this communication phenomenon. Besides, it is easier for him/her to form an idea on cardinal principles of the signs' function in media.

Vilém Flusser and Marshall McLuhan both developed original and specific models of the history of the culture. Vilém Flusser has formed the history according to the most popular communication code in the period. Marshall McLuhan has formed periods of the history according to the technology, which was dominant in the period. We will describe all important arguments and the starting points from which both authors result in creating their phasing of the history of the media. Consequently we will compare both models of the history of the media and we will show to the meeting and disagreeing points in their theories. We are going to analyze the hypothesis, that even if authors departure from different starting points, they find in their theories meeting points. Both theories of the history of the media describe new problems, which are occuring in the present and authors are suggesting the possibilities how to approach them and how to manage them.
