Culture and interpreting cultural factors in interpreting into the mother tongue and into a foreign active language
Court Interpreting for Children and Minors
Vorlická, Kateřina ; Čeňková, Ivana (advisor) ; Ďoubalová, Jana (referee)
The masterʼs thesis, divided into theoretical and empirical parts, deals with court interpreting for children and minors. After a short introduction to history, it describes the characteristic of court interpreting with the emphasis on children and minors involved in judicial proceedings. Following chapters focus on court interpreting in the Czech republic, expanding on its description, the related legal framework, required qualification and training of court interpreters. Subsequently, the thesis draws a comparison with training and education of other professionals taking part in proceedings with minors. Furthermore, the state of the art in the Czech republic is also compared to the situation in Belgium where the project CO-Minor-IN/ QUEST was launched and carried out. To our knowledge, it is the first international project on cooperation among major professionals involved in interpreted criminal proceedings with minor participants. The thesis presents a summary of findings concerning communication with children and minors, laying stress on particular patterns of behaviour and conduct that are likely to occur in little and school-age children. The information provided is considered in the context of court interpreting. The thesis puts emphasis on the most significant differences between court...
Annotated translation: Du trek à l'expé. Bien préparer son séjour en altitude (DAIGLE, Emmanuel. Du trek à l'expé. Bien préparer son séjour en altitude. Grenoble : Ed. Glénat, 2017.)
Kozáková, Eliška ; Šotolová, Jovanka (advisor) ; Ďoubalová, Jana (referee)
This bachelor's thesis consists of an annotated translation of a french mountaineering handbook Du trek à l'expé. Bien préparer son séjour en altitude. It includes two parts: the translation itself of two chapters, about training and equipement, and the annotation. The aim of the annotation is the analysis of the source text, the designation of the translation method, the analysis of the translation problems and the description of the translation procedures and shifts. The paper is based on the text analysis model by Ch. Nord, on the J. Levý's theory and on the E. Janovcová's typlogy of translation procedures. It also draws information from R. Jakobson's theory of language functions and A. Popovič's theory. Key words translation, translation analysis, translation procedures, translation shifts, language functions, mountaineering, high altitude expedition, physical training, outdoor equipement
Quality and Strategic Decision Making in Simultaneous Interpreting - Directionality and Strategies in Conference Interpreting of Legal Speeches
Ďoubalová, Jana ; Čeňková, Ivana (advisor) ; Mraček, David (referee) ; Müglová, Daniela (referee)
The dissertation provides a comprehensive analysis of the issue of quality in simultaneous interpreting. The theoretical part explores general questions related to quality in interpreting, namely the inherent difficulties encountered in defining quality, the issue of subjectivity in the assessment of quality, the different perspectives on quality and the issues surrounding the various quality criteria as suggested by different authors. The work focuses on the cognitive processes involved in simultaneous interpreting; concepts of working memory and cognitive load are discussed as well as their connection to the concept of interpreting as a decision-making process and a strategic behaviour. Quality is therefore understood as the capacity to efficiently and effectively manage available cognitive resources and to choose appropriate strategies to solve a particular problem in a specific interpreting situation, while taking into account the overall working conditions and the individual predispositions of the interpreter. The empirical part includes an analysis of actual interpreting of technical (legal) speeches. The technical nature of the speeches and the resulting linguistic and conceptual difficulties of the input material is considered to be a factor that increases cognitive load. The aim is to...

Theoretical predictions of the impact of a noisy channel on interpreters' performance in simultaneous interpretation and their empirical verification
Volenová, Eva ; Čeňková, Ivana (advisor) ; Ďoubalová, Jana (referee)
This thesis explores the issue of noise in the simultaneous interpreting process, using the concept of noise as defined in information theory and the model of communication developed by Claude Shannon. The theoretical section of this thesis first offers a brief explanation of the basic concepts involved in information theory, followed by a description of Shannon's model. Selected models of interpreting are then introduced based on this model of communication. A list of potential types of noise is then presented based on the literature examined that may have an impact on the interpreter during simultaneous interpreting. The empirical section of this thesis consists of a questionnaire and an experiment. The questionnaire determines to what extent interpreters find the potential types of noise from the list created in the theoretical section disruptive in their work. The list of types of noise is also expanded based on respondents' answers. The questionnaire also determines what strategies respondents employ to overcome adverse factors. The new types of noise and strategies employed are described in this thesis using open-ended answers from the respondents. The experiment tests the impact of a burst-noise channel on simultaneous interpreting. A total of 13 respondents took part in the experiment,...
