Russian Migration Policy Development. Immigration from the South Caucasian States to Russia (1992-2002)
Zajícová, Helena ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Litera, Bohuslav (referee)
The Master Thesis Russian Migration Policy Development: Immigrationfrom the South Caucasian States to Russia (1992-2002) seeks to analyze the development of the Russian migration policy since the disintegration of the USSR and demonstrate its impact on immigration processes from the South Caucasian States (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan) to Russia. It is argued that the Post-Soviet experience in the field of migration could significantly enrich the debate on international migration Most importantly, it clearly shows the false dichotomy between forced and voluntary migration. When forming the migration regime, Russia established a position against ethnic Russians living outside of the Russian Federation as well as former Soviet citizens in an effort to distinguish them from other international migrants. As a result, Russia formed the migration regime on the forced-voluntary model but described all migrations in the Post-Soviet region as forced and presented the above mentioned group with a special forced migration status applicable only to migrants with Russian citizenship. This model violated the principle of international standards by introducing a dichotomy between forced migrants with or without the status of Russian citizenship. This policy was intended to help ethnic Russians to resettle in...

The main part of this thesis represents an analysis of urbanistic and architectural aspects of both of them. Those changes are founded by the agreements that regularized the division of Těšín. Special emphasis is put on the analysis of the house building in Český Těšín that lost the majority of buildings necessary for town structure and town existence. Several questions should be answered in the end of this B.A. thesis. How the both towns changed during the interwar period, if the division of the town Těšín was settled successfully to satisfy both sides and if the town Český Těšín took the advantage of this occasion that offered the possibility to build a modern town in accordance to the interwar principles of urbanism and architecture.
Conceptualizing Eastern Europe: Past and Present
Mačkinis, Vilius ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Kolenovská, Daniela (referee) ; Gordy, Eric (referee)
The ideas presented in the dissertation are based on the premise that the concept of Eastern Europe is a construction, which received its meaning(s) trough events and shifts, which also shaped the idea of Europe. To analyze these influences several labels and aspects of history, which constructed the concept of Eastern Europe can be recognized. The author argues that there can be five important aspects, forming the concept and providing meanings, discerned and considered: (1) geography associated with the Eastern border of the European continent and its flexibility; (2) cultural trends, mainly provided by the ideas of the Enlightenment, which present the eastern part as wild, barbaric and uncivilized; (3) political formations, which by military and political means conquered or lost the region, alienating it with the West or making it a 'buffer zone'; (4) Economic aspects of backwardness and the constant try to catch-up with the West; and (5) the discourse about the region itself, historiography depicting the formations and ascribing labels to discourse. Operation "VISTULA": Its presentation in the People's Republic of Polanď s propaganda and contemporary interpretation
Veselý, Luboš ; Vykoukal, Jiří (advisor) ; Zilynskyj, Bohdan (referee)
This thesis deals with expulsions of (ethnic) Ukrainians from their homeland in post- war Poland in 1944-1947 and the presentation of these in communist Poland's propaganda. It also analyses different interpretations of these events after the political changes in Central and Eastern Europe at the end of the 1980s. Post-war changes of Poland's eastern boarder, where the Soviet Union could keep the territories it had occupied in 1939, led to a situation where only 0,5 to 0,7 million Ukrainians out of a pre-war population of 5 million remained in their original homeland in Poland's south-eastern region. After the end of World War II, the Ukrainian insurgent army (UPA) continued fighting for Ukrainian independence against the governments on both sides of the new border, which they felt transected Ukrainian territory. The Polish pro-soviet communist government, which had only very little support in Polish society, made use of extreme nationalism, anti-German and also anti- Ukrainian sentiments in order to gain legitimacy. The Polish and Ukrainian societies regarded each other as enemies since pre-war times and especially after WW II, when around 20 thousand Ukrainians and more than 90 thousand Poles were murdered in mutual killings. After the war, Ukrainians became the target of Polish revenge. Based on an...
