Monitoring of alkali-silica reaction
Doležal, Martin ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
Due to the alkali-silica reaction (ASR), concrete structures are damaged, which can lead to the loss of their useful properties. For the reaction to take place, the presence of alkalis is required. During the work, the release of alkalis into the pore solution was monitored. During hydration pore solutions were taken, on the basis of calorimetric curves. In pore solutions the K+ a Na+ content was analyzed by ICP-OES. The result is graphs of the development of alkali content and their relationship to cement hydration. The danger of the alkali in tested samples for the course of the reaction is described here. The description of the alkali content and its development is important for understanding the course of ASR and proposing a viable solution to protect against this problem.
Preparation and Properties of Roman Cement
Opravil, Tomáš ; Palou, Martin (referee) ; Škvára, František (referee) ; Havlica, Jaromír (advisor)
The Ph.D. thesis deals with the preparation of highly hydraulic binders based on roman cement. Roman cement (natural cement) is recently not available on the market due to uneconomic production of such a specific binder. On the other hand there is a big lack of information on this hydraulic binder. These results in failure in meeting the basic principle of modern approaches to restoration of historical buildings or monuments made of such kind of materials, which is such, that the materials used for restoration should be compatible with original material. Recognition of the processes of roman cement preparation based on progressive methods of study can provide substantial information for more efficient raw material selection or even for nontraditional utilization, for example for artworks. This work hence is aimed at studying and selection of traditional natural as well as nontraditional raw materials such as clay. This work also studies the preparation of highly hydraulic binders based on roman cement and the kinetics of burning and hydration processes
Study of synthetic sandstones preparation possibilities
Solik, Jaroslav ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
This thesis explores the possibility of developing synthetic sandstones based on alkaline-activated (geopolymer) binders. The goal is to design an appropriate connective system of optimal concentration, so that the prepared material (artificial stone) showed similar characteristics as natural. The experimental section summarizes the experiments that explore several different alkali connective systems. The aim is to compare the properties of binders prepared from methakaolin (Mefisto K-05 and L-05) alkali-activated by sodium or potassium water glass. For comparison with these connective systems were also prepared samples of commercially supplied geopolymer binder called Baucis
The influence of barium oxide on the formation and properties of portland clinker
Zezulová, Anežka ; Šoukal, František (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
Portland clinker is thanks to its large-scale production a continuously studied topic. Clinker, or Portland cement, is used for construction purposes, or for insulation and special applications. One of these special applications could be shielding of different types of radiation by making use of the content of barium ions. The present master’s thesis examines the influence of barium oxide on the formation and properties of Portland clinker, which could be, by incorporation of barium ions into the system, used as a binder for buildings resistant to various types of radiation. Barium sulfate and barium carbonate were added to the raw meal in order to prepare clinkers with different content of barium oxide. The effect of barium on the formation of clinker phases was studied (by XRD – Rietveld analysis and by the microscopic point integration), as well as the effects on the variations of temperature of the phase formation (TG-DTA) and the rate of alite formation under isothermal conditions. Furthermore, the ability of barium to become a part of clinker minerals was studied by SEM with EDS, and the solubility of barium phases by ICP-OES. The hydration of clinker minerals containing barium was studied by isothermal calorimetry.
The possibilities of use of sludges from limestone wash
Švec, Jiří ; Šoukal, František (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
In modern point of view of waste management is desirable to effectively process the grates possible amount of wastes. Sediments from cleaning of mined lime stones contains a lot of clay components, but there is also indispensable share of soft calcite. This composition makes these sediments a promising material for preparation of hydraulic binders. Production of common hydraulic binders, especially Portland cement, is very energy-intensive plus loads environment with considerable amount of combustion gases, therefore it is necessary to explore possibilities of alternative low - energy binders production and usage.
Possibilities of enhancement of kaolin whiteness
Krahulová, Veronika ; Bartoníčková, Eva (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
This thesis focuses on problematics of increasing the kaolin whiteness index. The aim of the thesis is to verify possibilities and efficiency of the mechanical method of increasing whiteness of kaolin using sand of a defined fraction. This method cannot be considered as a whitening operation of kaolin but as a pre-treatment of the raw material or as one of the steps in increasing the whiteness. There have been tested diverse proportions of added sand with which the batch of kaolin material was intensively mixed for various times. Moreover, there has been tested influence of water and total batch volume. To characterize prepared samples there have been used several methods; XRF and XRD analysis was used to determine the elemental and phase composition of raw kaolin before and after mechanical sand action. The UV - VIS method with reflectance was used to assess the achieved whiteness.
The composites materials based on the solid residues of fluidized combustion
Kalina, Martin ; Koplík, Jan (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with a study of possible preparation of composite materials based on the solid residues of fluidized bed combustion. It focuses mainly on the strength properties of prepared materials and the phase composition of incurred hydration products. A powder X-ray diffraction analysis was used to determine the phase composition of prepared stiffened samples. Based on analysis of raw materials (fluid ash), various ingredients and additives were added to the mixtures in order to modify the composition or rheological properties of the fresh mixtures. After 28 days of maturation, the phase composition of prepared samples and the development of compressive and tensile strength in bending were monitored.
Possibilities of using recycled brick in binders systems with p-clinker content
Tušla, Václav ; Ptáček, Petr (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
This diploma thesis deals with the preparation binder systems based on Portland clinker and recycled brick. Recycled brick is considered a waste material from construction or production of brick products. This thesis uses finely grounded brick recycled and brick dust, which is produced during final processing of burnt bricks. By incorporating brick dust in alternative system based on Portland clinker could bring ecological and economic benefits. This diploma thesis deals with option using brick dust as pozzolan admixture to Portland clinker, with the aim to prepare and test Portland cement, which is defined in v ČSN EN 197-1. This thesis also deals with possibility preparation of alternative binders based on p-clinker, but those not defined by ČSN EN 197-1. Specifically these are ternary binders with fluid bed ash and binders based on hybrid cements containing sodium sulfate.
Possibilities of the utilization of the waste sand from the water glass production in building industry
Bílek, Vlastimil ; Kalina, Lukáš (referee) ; Opravil, Tomáš (advisor)
Nowadays, the waste sands from the water glass production have no utilization and due to high alkali content are considered as a dangerous waste. So the aim of this thesis is to find and study some possibilities of their utilization in the building industry. First of all, some necessary analysis of these sands were performed and then some advantages and disadvantages of their application for production of materials based on portland cement and alkali activated materials were studied. Characteristics of fresh and hardened pastes, mortars and concretes containing these waste sands were determined. The most tested properties were their workability and their compressive and flexural strength. Close attention for the risks of alkali-silica reaction and for options of its suppressing by the mineral admixtures was paid.
Modern Inorganic Building Materials Free of Portland Cement
Sadílek, Jakub ; Opravil, Tomáš (referee) ; Zmrzlý, Martin (advisor)
This bachelor’s thesis is focused on properties of modern construction inorganic ma-terials – geopolymeric concretes. In introductional part of work it is described basic theoretical background, as properties of binders, principles of setting and hardening. For preparation of geopolymer matrix was used secondary or waste materials of energetic and metallurgical industry – fly ashes and slags. In laboratory were prepared four com-positions of geopolymeric concretes combined from geopolymeric matrix with constant compostition and variable composition of aggregates. As aggregates these materials were used: three fractions of quartz sand, steel furnace slag and in one composition also crystals of mineral wollastonit. It was discovered that the use of steel furnace slag as aggregate in geopolymeric concrete has positive influence mainly to compressive strength, but the addition of wollastonite mineral do not evocate expectable increase of mechanical properties of samples.
