Křivohlávek, Michal ; Uherek, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Pospíšilová, Jana (referee) ; Illner, Michal (referee)
Today the world population has reached its historical maximum and continues to rise. Billions of people travel in everyday life either to work and school or for community services. The daily practice of commuting substantially contributes to the perception of space of everyday life and to the image of city landscape. Nevertheless the means of everyday transit was not so far investigated as ways how to perceive the environment and method to create life-space. How is the city landscape specifically seen by commuters in different means of transport? What specific places and surroundings people encounter on the different ways of their everyday trips? This paper starts by presentation of different methods of investigation of space in ethnology and anthropology. On the example of Prague presents a broader overview to cultural context of daily space mobility. The third part of paper gives a result of concrete field study, how differently people commuting by diverse means of transportation describe the space and place around them.

Hanák, Martin ; Illner, Michal (advisor) ; Kandert, Josef (referee)
The aim of the work is to explore lifestyles, let us to say everyday activities in time and space as they are reflected in lifestyle, spending, leisure and professed values as a part of lifestyle of residents in next block of flats in a part of central city (Prague 5, Smíchov) which is in a direct neighbourhood of a core city. The intention is to find out as well if the concrete lifestyle of residents led to the fact that they decide to live in the area although most of them dispose of sufficient resources and can choose their place of living in all of Prague. That is why is the aim also to compare everyday activities in time and space of residents of central city with activities of residents of suburb. We could discover in the explored population living in central city 8 main types of lifestyles: lifestyle centred on family, on the care of the body and spirit, centred against partnership, active lifestyle, ambitious and longing for prestige, life without constraints, taking a back seat (conventional) and lifestyle of professionals centred on culture. When one of the dimensions of lifestyle (everyday activities) was compared between explored residents in area of central city and in area of suburb was found out the differences in shopping, traffic, time spent in a job and in leisure. Hastrmanová, Šárka ; Illner, Michal (advisor) ; Duffková, Jana (referee)
The social inequality is one of the most discussed problem in today's world. Inequality among different socioeconomic classes are also reflected in the character of today's cities. Residential segregation is a spatial form of social inequality in the area of towns. Spatial differentiation is the process which caused spatial segregation of different groups of inhabitants. The spatial differentiation has not only negative effects on the condition of towns and population, but also the experience with segregated poor ghettoes and deprivated neighborhoods in American cities shows how important this urban phenomena could be if we do not pay enough attention to it. The thesis in theoretical part outlines the context, causes, typology and possible consequences of the residential segregation in cities, there are also described policy preventive precautions. The paper is inspired by the American school of urban sociology, together with comparison of the environment of European and American cities. The second part is dedicated to the methodological discussion about the most useful tools to measure and identify segregation. The case study of the city Prague, which is the key part of this paper, display the situation of 22 administrative districts using the secondary analysis of census data in four dimensions (the...
Together for a Better City
Sládek, Jan ; Illner, Michal (advisor) ; Kostelecký, Tomáš (referee) ; Bernard, Josef (referee)
The goal of this text is to provide understanding of the role that locally organized citizens have in changing general political behavior of Czech people after 1989. The text combines knowledge of urban sociology, political and urban transformation, and citizen/political participation in post-1989 Czech Republic. Theoretically, the text is based in critical reception of urban sociology showing its rather low rate of understanding when analyzing the role of citizens in urban change. The text works with the concept of transaction activism, using it to analytically evaluate the forms of examined collective local action of citizens. Last but not least, attention is paid to the role of ICTs, notably the Internet, in forms of local citizen engagement. To provide the necessary context, the text reflects on main events in political participation on state level as well as it reflects on main urban changes after 1989. Methodologically, the work is based on data from two representative questionnaire surveys and fifteen interviews with representatives of citizen organizations. The main theses are following: (1) low direct experience with political issues leads to predominance of "the politics" as portrayed by mass media, yet it is rather easily unmasked by direct political experience; (2) Although the public opinion...
The Images of a City: the Resident's View of the Town of Nymburk
Malá, Michaela ; Sládek, Jan (advisor) ; Illner, Michal (referee)
The diploma thesis The Images of a City: the Resident's View of the Town of Nymburk deals with the issue of why people behave differently. The thesis is inspired by the approach of behavioral geography, which is represented by Kevin Lynch's work. Lynch has proposed the concept of the image of the city, the people's vision about the surroundings of a place where they live. The image of the city consists of its visible features evoking a strong impression and having an effect on people's sensory perception. Moreover, the direct influence of the city represented by architectural-urbanistic determinism and environmental psychology is also taken into account. I have found out during the research that both of theoretical approaches are important for identifying the relation between the town and his residents which relates to the behavior in the town. The aim of the diploma thesis is to find out which images of the town of Nymburk its inhabitants have, which components create their images and what is the composition of these components. The thesis focuses both on universal image of Nymburk and on images of the town with regard to the current lifecycle stage and respondents' sex. The research is made by the qualitative method using the mental maps and the semi-structured interview with sixteen respondents...
