Journalistic autonomy as a part of the professional identity of journalists

The master's thesis deals with journalistic autonomy as one of the principles of free press and as a key component of the professional identity of journalists. On an ideological level, the journalistic autonomy should ensure the free publication of information without political, economic, owner or any other kind of pressure. The main goal of the thesis is to verify how journalists themselves perceive their autonomy. In addition to developing basic theoretical concepts, the work builds on already implemented Czech and international empirical studies investigating journalistic autonomy. At the same time, it relies on some statements of media experts who criticize the current state of journalism and talk about the gradual weakening of journalistic autonomy in liberal-democratic systems, which results in fragmentation of the journalistic field, the profession declain and the growth of distrust in democratic media. The thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with journalists working at the Economia publishing house showed how they currently perceive their professional autonomy and what factors most influence them in the performance of their profession. Medial reflex of the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in the annual years in the Czechoslovak and Czech daily press

The bachelor thesis deals with the historical event that changed the course of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 and the subsequent occupation of the country. Specifically, it focuses on the contemporary press and how it covered the intervention of Warsaw Pact troops on the anniversary days of the invasion. The period under study is as delineated on the individual anniversary days of the entry of Warsaw Pact troops into Czechoslovakia. It is therefore 21 August 1969, 21 August 1970 and so on, up to 21 August 2000. The periodicals analysed are Rudé právo and Právo, Mladá fronta and Mladá fronta Dnes, Svobodné slovo, Lidové noviny and Nová svoboda. The main part of the thesis is the analysis of selected periodicals from which texts are selected that directly or indirectly mention the occupation. In this way, the thesis shows how the way of reporting on the events of August 1968 has changed over the years.

"Katolická akce" as a tool of communist propaganda for christians in Czechoslovakia in 1949-1951

The aim of this thesis is to show the specific elements of propaganda that the communist regime used to speak to Christians in Czechoslovakia in the years 1949- 1951 using the so-called Catholic Action. This movement was a tool of the communist regime that wanted to subjugate the Catholic Church and use it for its own purposes. Catholic Action was artificially maintained for almost two years and used in the press primarily as a supposed mouthpiece for all Catholics. Eventually, it disappeared from the pages of the newspapers. This thesis describes selected elements of propaganda using specific examples from periodicals of the time. The results can help us to gain insight into the mindset of the former communist regime.

Medial portrayal of Mikuláš Minář

The topic of this thesis is the presentation of the media image of Mikuláš Minář in two periods. The first period is during demonstrations on Letenská plain in June and November 2019. The second period is Mikuláš Minář's beginning in politics with his new political party Lidé PRO in 2021. This work has three goals: to present the media image of Mikuláš Minář in the first and second periods and then compare how these images differ and in what ways. To answer these questions, I chose a quantitative content analysis of selected media contents. The specific form of this method and the method of sample selection is described in the "Methodology" section. At the beginning of the diploma thesis, I focused on theory. In this section, the concept of "mass media" is described. This is followed by a section that focuses on the influence of the mass media and specifically the presentation of the media image as a theoretical concept.

Media as a topic of history classes

Mediální výchova jako téma hodin dějepisu - Abstract Bc. Martina Leciánová This work deals with the topic of media education as a topic in history classes. Its aim was to find out whether the Framework Education Program (FEP) deals with this issue and, on the basis of it, to find out to what extent it appears in the literature itself. The work consisted of a quantitative analysis of the mentioned documents falling under the Ministry of Education and Culture and history textbooks for the 9th grade. Part of the output was also the proposal of a methodological tool for facilitating the teaching of media education in the history class, which was created on the basis of interviews with history teachers. The results show that the RVP does not officially recognize this possibility of teaching, but media education as such appears in textbooks in limited quantities, and even the interviewed teachers stated that they perceive media education as part of history education. The proposed methodical tool is a database that would contain sources and resources that can be used in class to save time for teachers in preparation. The database could work through the mutual cooperation of individual teachers. So-called "from them for them".

Analysis of media coverage of the Ondřej Kúdela and Glen Kamara case

The bachelor thesis focuses on the media coverage of the Ondřej Kúdela and Glen Kamara case in selected Czech media. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on various aspects of the relationship between sports, media and racism. It describes the interconnections and issues of these three variables. It presents the efforts of sports associations to combat racism and promote inclusion in the field of sports. In the section on the connection between culture and sport, it examines the transformation of sport and its very function within culture. It then describes the role of the media in sports. The next chapter focuses on the influence of the media in shaping and reinforcing racial stereotypes in football. The theoretical part concludes by introducing the media under study. In the practical part, the thesis focuses on the depth of information presented, emotionality, representation of perspectives, multimedia and audience engagement. The results of the analysis are applied to the research questions and a conclusion is drawn.

Audio Drama in Czech Radio: From Radio Plays to Radio Drama Podcasts

This master thesis traces the development of radio plays and other drama works produced by Czech (Czechoslovak) Radio. First, it presents the development in this field from its beginnings about a hundred years ago to the present day. In the practical part (mainly due to the lack of material from earlier times) it then focuses on radio production from the 1960s onwards. The research focuses on whether and how drama radio production reflects the social and socio- political issues of the time period. This thesis uses particular radio plays and other works to show how they reflected these themes or how they constructed them in their own way depending on the time period. The qualitative analysis examined 22 original radio plays, 6 episodes of 1 radio series, and 3 episodes of 1 drama podcast. The theoretical basis for the research is provided by chapters on social construction of reality, the representation of reality in media, and a summary of Miloslav Petrusek's reflections on the sociology of literature, which we apply to the field of radio drama.

Ethical Principles of Czech Journalists in Reporting about Terrorism

An emergency situation like terrorism brings many dilemmas to media ethics This thesis focuses on the question of how selected Czech journalists ethically cover the topic of terrorism, even though the Czech Republic has not experienced a major terrorist attack of the kind seen in Western Europe after 2015. First, the concept of terrorism and its forms and trends are described, then the relationship between terrorism and the media is presented. To illustrate how codes of ethics think about such events, three Czech audiovisual media codes and three foreign ones, available in English, are compared. In the empirical part, the paper focuses on data from qualitative research and follows the principles of grounded theory. Interviews with eight journalists provide insight into how they think about ethics when reporting on terrorism, what rules they have developed and what other ethical areas they draw rules from. Among the principles they name, verifying information, not publishing explicit footage without reason, or trying to suppress information about a terrorist. Another finding is that selected journalists perceive that terrorists want to gain visibility through the media and by reporting on the acts, journalists help fulfill their cause.
