Middle European Military Camps in 1550-1650

The subject of this thesis is the problematics of the military camps of Christian armies in the Central Europe between 1550-1650. We focus on the camps of the Habsburg Monarchy and German lands, yet some space is given to the situation in Poland and Hungary. The introductory chapters consist of a characterization of the source material and an overview of the present state of research. Furthermore, excursuses into several topics related to the military camps of the early modern period are made. Thus, characterizations of the crucial war conflicts of the period, contemporary strategies and tactics, principals, composition and equipment of the armies, of the ranks, and of the life of soldiers are provided. The core of this work is an interpretation and comparison of treatises written by military theorists, who dealt with the problematics of camps, namely of the works by Jan Tarnowski, Guillaume du Bellay, Leonhardt Fronsperger, Lazarus von Schwendi, Giorgio Basta, Johann Jacobi von Wallhausen, and Raimondo Montecuccoli. Additionally, an analysis of the military orders of the Roman emperor Maximilian II and of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf is supplied, followed by memoirs and diaries of soldiers of that era, and contemporary literary fiction. Several Aspects of the Danish Phase of the Thirty Years' War, PhD dissertation, Charles University in Prague 2014 Summary In Czech and European historiography of the early modern period, the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) is one of the most discussed topics. Among Czech historians, there has always been an understandable emphasis on the revolt of the Bohemian estates, also known as the Bohemian phase of the war (1618- 1621). The Danish phase (1625-1629) is considerably less popular. The winners had already been or - to be more precise - seemed to be almost determined, and the further developments of the war did nothing to change the fate of the Czech lands. Analysis of the second half of the 1620s is therefore dominated by other topics - the recatholisation process, exile waves or the character of Albrecht von Wallenstein. Foreign historiographers also seem to downplay Denmark's influence. It is as if King Christian's unsuccessful attempt to fight the Emperor was only biding everyone's time until the "Lion of the North", Gustav II Adolf of Sweden, makes his great entrance. "And these soldiers have come to us..." The town of Slaný during the Thirty Years War as seen through the papers of its municipal government.

During the Thirty Years War the life of the inhabitants of Central Bohemian Town Slaný was (like the life in other central European towns in this period) mainly influenced by soldiers and various war events. Nevertheless, many changes in their lives were brought by the pawn and subsequent sale of the town to nobleman Jaroslav Bořita z Martinic. This thesis is mainly focused on the municipal administration, especially on war events impacts on the town government and also on the new elements in municipal administration related to the change of its legal status, respectively on encroachment of the new manorial lords on the municipal administration. It also deals with mechanisms used by municipal officials (authorities) to protect the lives and property of town's inhabitant against the rampage soldiery. It is not omitted the interactions occurred between the townspeople and soldiers including self-preserving mechanisms and adaptation strategies that allow them cope with soldiers presence as well.

Village Pátek during 20th century

This bachelor thesis deals the village Pátek during the history. The main part of thesis is 19th and especially 20th century. Are important events that had a major impact on the lives of citizens. The beginning is describes several events from earlier period, which significantly changed the character of village. In the century are then collected separately and described some important points in the village, consisting primarily of buildings (mills, school) or economic sectors (fish farming), which at that time played an important role, whether cultural or business, the lives of the villagers. The focus works are the memorial books and chronicles, to a lesser extent, the recorders of the meeting of the National Committee. To complement and improve some information was also used in the memories of several witnesses.

Czech Lands' Thirty Years War Mercenary's Life

This thesis deals with life of mercenaries during the Thirty Years' War. It is focused on the situation in central Europe and especially in the Czech lands. The main part of the thesis concentrates on the appearance of military camps which is reconstructed based on normative sources, ego-documents, folk songs and period artistic literature, paintings and drawings. To introduce the topic I describe various types of soldiers in the Habsburg army and the subordination of the army. One chapter is meant to work as a guide through the life of a mercenary - about his living in the army from his recruitment up to his discharge. We mention the material equipment and soldiers clothing as well. Women were a usual part of the army, therefore I also pay attention to them. The main topic of the work is military camp, therefore a description of its appearance is given, describing the arrangement of all its parts. I mention tents, markets and inns. I also deal with camp life's negatives, for example with diseases or activities condemned by the contemporary moral. Military law is briefly described as well. I also mention administrative officers who are responsible for the aspects of military life related to the camps. In the end there is also integrated a chapter about the civilian view on mercenaries and the war...

Telč in seventeenth century

The topic of my bachelor's work is the history of the town of Telč in the 17th century. I chose this historical epoch mainly for the reason that little attention was devoted to it in previous research of Telč history. First, I evaluate the works that have been written about Telč so far. I try to assess the approach of their authors and I investigate which historical period of the town they considered to be the heyday of time. I also focus on their view of the town in the 17th century. Subsequently, I incorporate Telč to the urban network in early modern times. I compare its size not only to towns in the Telč County but also to the size of urban settlements in Bohemia and Moravia. Afterwards, I introduce the members of Slavata family individually and their relationship to the town. Then, I concentrate on the impact of the Thirty Years War on the town and the situation thereafter. Finally, I reconstruct the appearance of the town administration on the basis of extant sources, its functioning and relationship to the castle lords in the last chapter.

The disaster of Netolice. Influence of battle at Záblatí on everyday life in the domain

Submitted work aims to capture the changes in lives of ordinary people in the Netolice domain over the years 1618-1620. Using personal correspondence and sources of registration nature it is documented how the war conflicts influenced the population of South Bohemia during the early phase of the Thirty Years War. The aim of the study is the reconstruction of war events in the period from the beginning of the Estates Uprising till the battle at Záblatí. Attention is also paid to changes in the everyday life of villagers living in the South Bohemian battlefield. Those occurred primarily through changes in rustic farms and town households. The everydayness of inhabitants transformed also through social, economic and property changes. Changes are documented by way of comparing the pre-war situation with the post-war environment in which the then man tried to live and survive. The entire work is summarized in the conclusion, which recapitulates discovered findings and provides additional options for further research.
