"Not in our name": The Melilla Tragedy as a case study of partisan media coverage of migration in the Spanish southern border
Vidal Rico, Marina ; Neag, Annamária (advisor) ; Macková, Veronika (referee)
The term "Melilla tragedy" is usually used to refer to the events of the 24th of June 2022, when the attempted crossing to the Spanish side of the Melilla border by a group of around 2.000 Sub-Saharan migrants resulted in at least 25 deaths. Hoping to contribute to the understanding of the coverage of migration in polarized media environments, the present study looks at articles focused on these events published by Spanish national media across the political spectrum. Through a Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis approach, 16 opinion pieces published by El País, El Mundo, El Confidencial, and elDiario.es were critically examined in search of relevant conclusions on the influence of media partisanship in the media's reporting on the Southern border, and differences between the short and long-term reporting on the events. Results of this analysis point to ideology-based differences in the portrayal of migrants and the border and an overall tendency to talk about migration from a political standpoint, even more so in the long term.
Anti-pandemic measures in a comparative perspective (Spain - Czech Republic)
De La Cruz, Christopher-Alexander ; Handrlica, Jakub (advisor) ; Adamec, Martin (referee)
Anti-pandemic measures in a comparative perspective (Spain - Czech Republic) Abstract The pandemic of the covid-19 disease, caused by a previously unknown type of coronavirus known professionally as SARS-CoV-2, hit our country in early March 2020. At that time, perhaps no one could have guessed what awaited us all in the coming months and years. As this was a pandemic on a global scale, we were not the only ones facing the toughest stress test of modern healthcare emergency regulations. In its own way, the Kingdom of Spain, for example, was also dealing with a pandemic in the following two and a half years, and I have decided to compare the Czech approach to that. In the first part of my master's thesis, I discuss how the legal systems of both countries were prepared for a health emergency of this magnitude. In order to establish a general framework, I first highlight the main legal differences between the Spanish and the Czech state. I then discuss the theoretical grounding of states of emergency. Next, I go through the legal framework at the constitutional level, followed by the statutory and sub-statutory levels, comparing the different norms and trying to find parallels between them. I observe in particular the great fragmentation of the legal regulation of health emergencies on the Spanish side and the...

The thesis compares the historical development of representation of women, given factors, and indicators and attitudes of political parties in Spain and Ukraine. Based on the results of is comparison, it was exemplifies that the high proportion of women in the Congress of Deputies of Spain is a consequence of the established gender policy of the state and the imposition of compulsory electoral quotas, and sanctions for its violation. In conclusion, there are recommendations for Ukraine to improve the current state of the issue.

Spanish International Trade Policy under Francisco Franco's Regime
Sharabati, Abdel Fattah ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Jeřábek, Martin (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the trade policy of Spain in relation to other countries during the reign of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco. It analyzes the changes in the position of strategic partners for Spain between 1936-1975, i.e., during the Franco era. The main variable in this process should be the change of the international political scene from the turbulent 1930s, through the Second World War, to the post-war period, i.e., the Cold War and the division of the world into "East" and "West" and the period of decolonization. Although General Franco's government could be described as totalitarian or clerical-fascist and suppressing any liberal- democratic tendencies on the domestic scene, especially in international politics, Franco was able to move very deftly and get the most out of most political negotiations with foreign partners for Spain. Therefore, even the Spaniards themselves are very contradictory in their assessment of the period of his reign. In analyzing Spain's developments on the international stage, many of the variables that have influenced Spain's direction, both directly and indirectly, must be taken into account. Among these variables we can include, for example, various contracts, agreements, but also sanctions or embargoes.

Vondruška, Tomáš ; Menclová, Barbora (advisor) ; Mejstřík, Martin (referee)
This bachelor's degree thesis deals with the political role of FC Barcelona in modern Catalonia a its reaction to the 2017 independence referendum. The timeline of the work is from the year 2012 till 2017. The main data is gathered from the club's online media and other international media. The beginning chapters consist of nationalism and nationalism in sport and then its connection to football. It is followed by a quick political review of Catalonia in the analysed years and the relationship between FC Barcelona and Catalonia throughout history. The thesis focuses on relation between an apolitical subject such as a football club and a stateless region and its role in the independence fight. The result is that the club stands in a neutral position towards politics, but it works with many other organisations with the aim of spreading the Catalan culture and overall situation worldwide. The fans of the club with their nationalistic flags also spread the fight with the help of televised matches. FC Barcelona supported the referendum but without favouring any side. This neutral stance towards politics is described only as a defence of democracy and the freedom of speech. These are the values the club showed throughout its history and now swears to continue in the same way.
Comparation of separatist organizations ETA and IRA
Klouček, Petr ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Doboš, Bohumil (referee)
This thesis focuses on two separatist organisations, the Basque ETA and the Irish IRA. The thesis uses the method of comparative analysis, therefore, it aims to find out what were the similarities and differences between the separatist organisations. Among other things, the thesis looks at the development of Basque and Irish nationalism and examines the historical background of both conflicts, as the origins of both conflicts are very important for the comparison itself. Both the Basque ETA and the Irish IRA are in fact the best known modern separatist organisations that were active in Europe in the second half of the 20th century, and it is safe to say that they left their tragic mark on both Spanish and British territory, alternately changing the political situation in both countries. Although the thesis also explores and develops Irish and Basque nationalism, the primary aim of the thesis is to compare ETA and the IRA, from the period of their emergence. The temporal dimensions of the comparison will be slightly different for the two organisations, as ETA will be examined from 1959, the year of its foundation. For the IRA, the beginning of the modern conflict is 1969 and the formation of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA for short), but the origins of this organisation go back to the...
