Title: Curves of constant width Author: Miroslav Němec Department: Department of Mathematics Education Supervisor: RNDr. Antonín Slavík, Ph.D., Department of Mathematics Education Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to familiarize the reader with the notion of the width of a given plane curve, and with curves having the same width in all directions. We focus our attention especially on those curves that are constructible using straightedge and compass. The chapters presenting the definition and measurement of curve width, as well as the construction of curves from circular arcs, are accessible to high-school students. We also briefly mention other related topics, such as the solids of constant width. Keywords: Width of a curve, constant width, construction, properties

Casting of manganese steels and their use
Dufka, Martin ; Šenberger, Jaroslav (referee) ; Pernica, Vítězslav (advisor)
Austenitic manganese steel, often referred as Hadfield´s steel after its discoverer, has an irreplaceable place in foundry due to its specific properties. Due to local pressures and shocks, surface of castings is hardened, but the cast core retains its toughness. Thus, manganese steel is used for castings of highly stressed machine parts that are subject to abrasive wear. This bachelor thesis is concerned about methods of production, chemical composition, influence of some alloying elements on properties and structure of steel, heat treatment, material properties, reinforcement mechanisms and types of individual deformation reinforcements. Further attention is paid to the most frequent use of manganese castings in practice.
Equipment for activites in unkempt winter terrain

The topic of this study is an equipment used in unkempt terrain of winter mountains. The study is of a purely descriptive nature. It describes the whole scale of equipment used for skialpinism, freeride, backcountry, telemark and trekking. Its content is divided into several chapters according to purpose and utilization of a single types of this equipment. First part describes an equipment for the moving in winter terrain itself, second part deals with an equipment connected with a security and rescue operations. Third part is devoted to backpacks. Following chapter describes an outdoor wearing, next one is focused on an equipment needed for spending the nights in winter nature. A separate chapter then describes other supplementary equipment and finally the last part is devoted to the description and characteristics of an equipment for mountain climbing. Each chapter mentions a concrete examples of an equipment available today.
Generating functions and their use in the theory of probability
Hujer, Peter ; Omelka, Marek (advisor) ; Bubelíny, Peter (referee)
Generating functions are suitable mathematical apparatus to describe the distribution of random variables. In this paper we introduce frequently used types of generating functions, their basic properties, uniqueness and benefits of use. We use this established mathematical apparatus for some known continuous and discrete distributions, but also the unusual practical examples. Then we fully utilize the strength of generating functions to solve interesting problems, often associated with creation of the theory of branching processes, an important area of probability theory.
Polyethylene wear particles around joint replacements - their properties, distribution and possible mechanism of their adverse biological effects
Zolotarevová, Eva
This PhD thesis in essence rounds off the range of queries asked several years ago when the task was set by Doc. RNDr. Zdenek Horak, PhD. The original isolation procedure for polyethylene wear particles, identification of some of their physico-chemical properties and manipulation accordingly has been successful in the process of this thesis accomplishment. It became possible to quantify the particles at relative as well as absolute scale. The thesis managed to disprove the published opinion that centrifugation can affect the morphology of isolated particles. The issue of distribution of polyethylene wear particles around hip endoprothesis has been solved at two levels: "macroscopically", the distribution of wear particles in zones around endoprosthesis was showed (this thesis does not include these data). Furthermore, at the "microscopic" level, the distribution of wear particles in granuloma tissue from the zones surrounding endoprostheses with most particles has been determined. The granuloma tissue formed in zones with most particles because of that. It was observed that the common term - osteoagressive granuloma - used by orthopedist is rather misguided. Granuloma is not aggressive to bone tissue. On the contrary, the granuloma formation reduces the effective amount of wear particles with...

CHARLES UNIVERSITY IN PRAGUE FACULTY OF SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY PRAGUE 2010 Supervisor: Doc. MUDr. Jiří Gallo, PhD. Supervisor-consultant: Prof. RNDr. Gustav Entlicher, CSc. Eva Zolotarevová Summary of PhD Thesis POLYETHYLENE WEAR PARTICLES AROUND TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENTS - THEIR PROPERTIES, DISTRIBUTION AND POSSIBLE MECHANISM OF THEIR ADVERSE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS PRAGUE 2010 The research project was supported by the Grant project of National research program II. (no. 2B06096) of the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports named "Observation and minimization of UHMWPE wear in joint replacements". Front-page picture: Polyethylene wear particle isolated from granuloma tissue surrounding total hip replacement; Electron microscope microphotograph; particle size app. 90 x 80 µm; retouched Eva Zolotarevová Introduction Introduction For many people all over the world a replacement with an implant of irreversibly damaged joint is often the only way how to come back to normal life without pain and mobility limitation. Nowadays, greater and greater requirements are asked of quality of all replacement components, especially in terms of quality of used materials. Biomechanical properties of hip and knee replacements have been already solved. The most often used materials for manufacturing joint...
