The impact of caring for a person with dementia on the perception of old age and aging
Trešlová, Debora ; Hasmanová Marhánková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Spalová, Barbora (referee)
This work focuses on the themes of old age, ageing and dementia. It seeks to explore how people who are caring for a loved one with dementia construct their ideas about the illness and how their experience of caring translates into their ideas about old age and ageing. These themes are discussed against the background of the third age, active ageing and the social imagination of the fourth age as conceived by Gilleard and Higgs. The thesis shows how the respondents form their ideas about their own old age in the context of third age culture, what aspects of old age they consider most important, and conversely what constitutes for them an image of a bad old age. At the same time, this thesis captures the respondents' experience of caring for their parent and how they construct ideas about this illness on the basis of this experience. The specific aspects of the disease of dementia are discussed in the context of key elements of the social imaginary of the fourth age and its most debated concepts, including the concept of personhood. The problematic aspects of the disease are reflected in the experience of caring for a loved one with dementia, and reflected in the fear of the disease in terms of their impact on the relationship with the parent, the nature and need for care.
Clinical variability of rare dementias: manifestations and possible reasons
Tesař, Adam ; Rusina, Robert (advisor) ; Baláž, Marek (referee) ; Hort, Jakub (referee)
Clinical variants of dementia are limiting their diagnosis and can leads to underdiagnosing or substitution of two different diseases with the same symptomatology. The aim of this study is a better understanding of a factors involved in the clinical variability of rare dementias. Progressive supranuclear palsy and Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker syndrome caused by mismatch mutation P102L in Prion protein are used as model diseases. In this thesis, we firstly demonstrate the influence of the distribution of neuropathology and its spread on the clinical phenotype of the disease. Although a single neurodegenerative disease increases the risk of neurodegenerative comorbidity, this other neuropathology does not affect the phenotypic presentation of the primary disease. Monogenetically inherited proteinopathies can have a different clinical subtype, which is not only conditioned by causal protein polymorphisms, but can be influenced by the wild type allele of causal protein. A more accurate understanding of the symptomatic variability in dementias will allow a better focus of a drug studies and, in the future a treatment, but it will also lead to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Keywords: dementia, Progressive supranuclear palsy, Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker...

Ethics and Power in Social Health Services
Hradcová, Dana ; Holmerová, Iva (advisor) ; Bittnerová, Dana (referee) ; Parry Martínková, Irena (referee)
The following text is an ethnographical study of relations in which care is shaped. On the example of care homes with special regime I describe how power is made and how different ideals are enacted in care of people with dementia. Through the analysis of daily activities' micro practice, I introduce two possible ways (modes of ordering) of care for frail elderly with cognitive impairment. The first of the modes is based on an enactment of ideals introduced into the practice by the Social Services Act and related system of quality standards: autonomy, individualisation, activation, and inclusion. It relies on standardisation of procedures, detailed specification of actions and management by objectives. The second mode of ordering, which could be located in the stories from care homes, is founded on an inevitable human dependency and vulnerability, and on general human need of giving and receiving care. In it, relationships and care improvisation here and now play the key role. My ethnographic fieldwork has shown that in everyday practice these two ways of doing good care co-exist - they complement each other, overlap and sometimes clash. People in care homes, striving for the better and the best care, either keep together, or hold apart these different and non-coherent ways of care. In discourse of...

Jechová, Štěpánka ; Ondrušová, Jiřina (advisor) ; Čedík, Miloslav (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the effects of music therapy on the lives of people with Alzheimer's disease and is divided into five main chapters. The first chapter deals with the terminological definitions of dementia, informs about risk factors, symptomatology and presents other types of dementia. The next chapter introduces the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, lists the forms, progression of the disease and possible methods of diagnosis of the disease. The third chapter deals with the importance of activating clients with dementia and lists the suitable forms of activation. The following fourth chapter examines the use of music therapy on people with Alzheimer's disease. It further describes types, forms, models, musical means and musical instruments of music therapy. The final, practical part consists of a description and my findings from two music therapy sessions, which took place in the Day Care Center of the Farní charity Příbram. Part of the work also includes a case report of a client with Alzheimer's disease, enriched with the forms of natural activation used in the home environment.

Papežová, Vanda ; Šteffl, Michal (advisor) ; Větrovský, Tomáš (referee)
Title: Estimation of normative values for the semantic verbal fluency test in older adults over 50 Objective: The aim of the diploma thesis was to create normative values for the semantic verbal fluency test (animal category) for older adults over 50 years, depending on the level of education achieved. Methods: The diploma thesis is constructed as a cross-sectional study. All data were obtained from the international project Survey of Health Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The descriptive statistics of participants were produced with calculated means and standard deviation for continuous variables and percentage for categorical variables. The median and interquartile range for age and semantic verbal fluency test (animal category), and 2nd , 7th , and 16th percentile as the cut-off points for verbal fluency test (animal category) were calculated for participants divided into ISCED - 97 education levels and for each country separately. Results: Data from 64,242 participants aged 66.4 were analyzed, and the female ratio was 55.8 %. All respondents were older adults over 50 years old from 20 European countries. Figures and tables show that all percentiles as cut-off points increased linearly with levels of education. Other result is that the performance in the test gradually decreased with...
