Barbora Skálová Whose side are you on? Radical Left in postwar Finland - on the phenomenon of Marxism-Leninism outside the Eastern Bloc Abstract The dissertation aims to explore the phenomenon of a radical left movement - Taistoists - which at the turn of the 60s and 70s for a short period of time dominated the student and cultural circles in Finland. The dissertation strives to shed light on the reasons for the uprise of the - in European context unique - pro-Soviet, Marxist-Leninist and "anti-anti- establishment" youth movement, and on its influence on home and foreign policy of Finland in terms of so-called Finlandization. The work also puts the movement into the Czechoslovakian context, mainly in relation to the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion. The dissertation discusses the theoretical anticapitalistic background of the movement and compares it to the theoretical background and political practice of coeval New Left movements in Europe and the USA. The experience of the members of the movement has been elaborated in the oral history part based on personal interviews. The oral history chapter aims to offer an explanation and a broader perspective of the taistolaiset phenomenon presented by direct witnesses and participants of the movement.

Parakratos in Post-Civil War Greece: Reality and Interpretation

Based on a historiographical, archival and media analysis, this doctoral thesis explores the phenomenon of parakratos (translated as deep state or parastate) in post-civil war Greece (1949-1967). Research perspectives are fourfold: Firstly, parakratos is discussed in the context of academic debates on parapolitics and the concepts of the dual state, the security state and the deep state; and presented as a Cold War parallel power mechanism, analogical to Italy and Turkey. Secondly, parakratos is analysed as part of domestic political reality through the prism of the historical events documented in Greek historiography. In this sense, the thesis concentrates on the emergence and operation of clandestine military groups and parastate ultra- nationalist organisations against the backdrop of the Greek political, legal and social environment. Both phenomena are elaborated on through the lens of the inefficient Greek political and administrative system, a deeply divided society, the politicisation of the public space, and the persistence of clientelist networks constructed upon political loyalties. The media image of the 1956 and 1960 Summer olympic Games in the Czechoslovak press

This diploma thesis named "The media image of the 1956 and 1960 Summer Olympic Games in the Czechoslovak contemporary press" follows the media coverage of the XVI. Summer Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 and the XVII. Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960, in selected Czechoslovak periodicals. To establish a media image, the diploma thesis utilises a qualitative content analysis, comparing the transformation of Olympic news reporting in Melbourne and Rome. It focuses on media content and its permeation through the communist ideology. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and methodological part. The theoretical part begins with the historical development of Czechoslovakia after 1948, when the Communists seized power, and then characterizes the "melting period". The thesis also inquires into the development of media in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s with an emphasis on media legislation, including the introduction of selected periodicals: Rudé Právo (Red Law), Svobodné slovo (Free Word) and Československý sport (Czechoslovak Sport). The methodological part maps how the Czechoslovak press informed its readers about the Olympic events in Melbourne and in Rome. Media coverage of Korean war by the journal Rudé právo

This Diploma thesis deals with the media coverage of the Korean war in the Rudé právo daily, in that period the official newspaper of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. Its main goal is to ascertain the rate of influence of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, of rigorous censorship of the regime and Soviet Union dictatorship upon informing about events of the Korean war, which was the first conflict ever where the United Nations army, consisting of several states, was fighting together. For this purpose, by studying secondary resources I am first of all describing conditions leading to the war and determining the most important events of the war, including for instance landing of the United Nations forces in Incheon, China involvement or distinct phases of armistice negotiations. The crucial part of this thesis is the portrayal of these events in the newspaper, including monitoring of tens of issues between late May 1950 and early October 1950. Regarding the facts ascertained by that time I am switching to five days cycles of newspaper monitoring, which has by the end proven to be absolutely sufficient for creating a comprehensive image.
