Privatization of banks in Slovakia and its impact on bank market
Soták, Branislav ; Půlpán, Karel (advisor) ; Slavíček, Ján (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with the transition and privatization of banks in Slovak Republic. In the beginning, it describes the theoretical background of financial transition. It then copes with the emergence of two-tiered banking and privatization and its implications for the uprise of a Slovak specific corporate governance model, in which banks played a crucial role. The third part investigates problems of the development of the banking sector until late 90s, mostly the vast non-performing loan portfolio. These problems eventually led to a banking crises, that was necessary to be solved via costly restructuring and privatization of banks with the entry of strategic foreign investors, the fourth part describes the process. The last part is dedicated to an empirical analysis of the impact of various ownership forms on the cost efficiency of banks in the sample of Czech and Slovak banks in the period 1996-2005. To estimate the efficiency we use the stochastic frontier approach with the translog specification of the cost function. The results support the hypothesis that privatized banks are more cost efficient than stateowned banks.
Perspectives of the Cuban Transition to Democracy
Fungačová, Hana ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (referee)
Diploma thesis "Perspectives of the Cuban Transition to Democracy" tries to analyze the current situation in Cuba and answer a question if the transition to democracy is possible and if so, in which period of time. It also tries to confirm or disprove two hypotheses set ahead: 'the transition to democracy is possible but only in a long period of time' and 'there will not be any changes during Fidel Castro's life'. This paper also tries to depict some theoretical models of the transition to democracy, brief history of Cuba which is indispensable for understanding of the current situation in Cuba and the perspectives of the future transition as well. The thesis also comprehensively deals with characterization of the current Cuban regime and its main representatives, analysis of the civil society and the inner opposition in Cuba and also with the international situation and its main actors which are able to to influence the current situation in Cuba and its future transition as well. There are also depicted some scenarios and factors of the future transition and briefly described some essential subsequent reforms though the application of some theoretical approaches on the analysis of the particular situation in Cuba.
The Hungarian uprising 1956 in light of transitological theories
Slezáková, Radka ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Kučera, Rudolf (referee)
The aim of this diploma degree thesis called The Hungarian uprising 1956 in light of transitological theories is an application of these theories on a process which took a place in a period 1953 - 1956 and ended in uprising in 1956. These events happened before the creation of the transitological theories. The application of these theories provides politological analysis of the whole process, examines the transitological theories, above all their universality. In the first part, transitology as politological analyses is outlined, including its creation and development as well as the authors and their studies which supported the development of these theories. I emphasized the best known theories from Samuel Huntington and Adam Przeworski. The second part is focused on analyses of position of opposition outside regime, reformers and hardliners in regime using these theories. I paid my attention to Soviet Union. The soviets tanks repressed the Hungarian uprising in the end. Despite this fact I studied if the year 1956 could have constituted the democracy or some hybrid form of democracy. I analyzed this idea with application the transitology theories on Hungarian example. On the basis of these theories I reached the conclusion that the situation in 1956 could constitute some form of hybrid democracy....
Construction of masculinity and femininity by transsexuals who have not undergone sex reassignment surgery
Chovancová, Martina ; Pospíšilová, Marie (advisor) ; Hrešanová, Ema (referee)
The diploma thesis examines the construction of masculinity and femininity of young transsexual individuals who have not undergone surgical gender reassignment. The work is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part builds on the theory of gender stereotype and the research of Gagné and Tewksbury, according to which transsexual individuals try to suppress their feminine or masculine selves as expected, while maintaining relationships. Furthermore, the work is based on Mandal's and Jakubowski's study, which confirms the theory that transsexual women live more in a gender stereotype than transsexual men who live in accordance with their original and new gender roles. In the practical part, a qualitative survey is carried out using the method of grounded theory, and six transsexual respondents were interviewed using semi- structured interviews: three transsexual men and three transsexual women. The sample is selected from transgender individuals who have not undergone operative gender reassignment and have decided to share their story on social networks. The aim of the research part is to find out how transsexual people without operative gender reassignment construct their masculinity and femininity. The main finding was that transsexual individuals who chose not to undergo sex...
Syntactic and FSP aspects of the existential construction in Norwegian
Dubec, Pavel
The aim of the present thesis is to analyze the Norwegian existential construction (presenteringskonstruksjonen) with regard to syntax, static semantics, dynamic semantics, and functional sentence perspective (FSP). The thesis first introduces the firbasian FSP theory in general, demonstrating the concepts on Norwegian examples. Then the theories most relevant for the study of the existential construction are summarized. The analysis is carried out on a sample of 1000 instances (500 taken from fiction and 500 excerpted from academic prose), and focuses mainly on the notional subject, the verb, and a possible adverbial. The syntactic analysis includes the position and the structure of the notional subject and adverbials. In addition, the lexical semantics of the head words and static semantics of adverbials were observed. The FSP analysis focused on the FSP functions of the individual clause elements and the FSP patterns the existential construction may realize. In addition, the dynamic semantic roles were studied in relation to the static semantic roles. The aim of the analyses is to find out in what circumstances the existential construction may realize the presentation scale or the quality scale, and what functions the construction may perform. The thesis observes the application of FSP on real...
The role of preceptor nurse in the transition period at the selected workplace
Polidarová, Zuzana ; Heczková, Jana (advisor) ; Jeřábková, Lenka (referee)
Introduction: A nurse preceptorship is essential in the transition period (TP) of novice nurses. Especially in intensive care workplaces, where training for highly specialized and demanding care is provided. TP thus becomes a sensitive period in which the employee decides whether to remain in the workplace or even in the profession. Methodology: This is qualitative study with the main focus of the survey on the specific experience of preceptors with TP management. Data collection was performed using semi-structured interviews with preceptor nurses in one selected workplace of intensive care. Data analysis was performed in 4 steps, open coding and sorting of data into categories and subcategories were used. Results: Six main topics were identified: Preceptors' experience from their own transition, TP organization attributes, Evaluation and feedback, The role of the preceptor nurse, Critical moments and Factors influencing the TP. The experience of trainers from their own TP is a significant predictor for their individual way of training and leading novice nurses. Evaluation and feedback have a culture and should be performed regularly in cycles to achieve the purpose. The preceptor has many roles, participates in the creation of social relationships with the novice, he himself strives to establish...
Preconditions of Democracy: How forced democratization depends on transformation and state-building characteristics
Kraft, Michael ; Hays II, George (advisor) ; Laryš, Martin (referee)
Military Democratic Intervention is a common strategy of foreign interaction especially since World War II. However, the question why some interventions are successful in implementing democracy and others are still not answered satisfactorily. Whereas the scientific debate so far focused on mission specific characteristics including variables such as personnel or financial equipment of interventions, the underlying assumption of this work is that external democratized countries need to exhibit the same preconditions as countries internally democratized. Therefore, the transition and state-building literature is investigated and five clusters of preconditions for successful democratization is developed. With a Qualitative Comparative Analysis, a dataset comprising 27 cases, eight variables and the outcome variable, the author provides evidence for the significance of all five clusters. Most importantly, the level of human development and modernization as well as the predecessor regime type and the experience with democratic experience strand out. Further, the combination of the variables of high GDP, an ethnically homogeneous society and a democratically ruled neighborhood are identified as variables sufficiently influencing successful democratization after a military intervention. These results...
Waveguide-SIW transitions
Bednarský, Vojtěch ; Láčík, Jaroslav (referee) ; Špůrek, Jan (advisor)
This work deals with the design of waveguide transitions. In this work I describe two usually used types of waveguides and that is classical rectangular waveguide with standardized designation WR-10, which is designed for working frequency 94GHz. The second type will be a waveguide integrated into the substrate called SIW. In the first part, numerical models of waveguides are calculated and transitions are created. Numerical models are simulated in CST Microwave Studio. Transitions are constructed in two types. Horizontal transition and orthogonal transition. The results of the first part are obtained dimensions of parameters from numerical models and S-parameters of transition sets.
Liminality and career termination among professional ice-hockey players
Neuman, Michal ; Numerato, Dino (advisor) ; Háková, Lucie (referee)
The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of termination of professional ice-hockey career. In particular, it focuses on the period of one's life, which comes after the termination or the decision about the termination of the career. It uses the concept of liminality, which allows focussing on the transition from the sport to post-sport life. Within the analysis, 6 semi- structured qualitative interviews have been done with the former professional ice-hockey players. Those were chosen for different characteristics, for the sample to be miscellaneous. In the transition period, the bachelor thesis focuses on the manifestations of liminality in particular. Those are for example the ambiguity of the individual, the anti-structure, the revaluation, rethinking one's self and the society and the experimenting with the new possibilities, which come to light in this phase of transition. The entry to the new social structure is also dealt with in this thesis. The involvement within the new structure is viewed by the concept of resocialization and the construction of identity. The analysis uses the method of qualitative content analysis with the usage of deductive category application. That means prior formulated categories were used and those were being connected with the text. At the end of this thesis, the...
