Against adaptation: toward transdisciplinarity and minor cinema
Petříková, Linda ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (advisor) ; Nováková, Soňa (referee) ; Burt, Richard (referee)
Against Adaptation: Toward Transdisciplinarity and Minor Cinema Linda Petříková Abstract Over the past decades, the field adaptation studies has been trying to break new grounds and escape the confines of the predominant fidelity discourse. This thesis wants to propose new perspectives that have been widely underrepresented, at least in the Anglo-American context, drawing attention to the great relevance to adaptation of the writings of French critical thinkers, most notably Gilles Deleuze and his two-volume publication on cinema and Jacques Rancière and his continuation/reevaluation of Deleuze's film-related concepts. Without directly addressing questions of adaptation, the way both philosophers think about cinema is inseparable from their thinking about literature and indeed about other arts and media, exemplifying new transdisciplinary approaches to adaptation this thesis hopes to encourage. Even though it might seem counterintuitive, considering the efforts of adaptation studies to cut the roots it has grown within literary departments, I chose three Shakespearean adaptations for the case studies as I believe that such focus will enable us to see more clearly the significance of interstices as much as of the links the films form with the text. Jean-Luc-Godard's King Lear, Orson Welles's Chimes at...
A Contribution to the Propaganda of the British Empire in Film in 1918-1939
Veselý, Jiří ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Valkoun, Jaroslav (referee)
The aim of the bachelor thesis is to analyse propaganda of the British Empire in the film between the years 1918 - 1939. The British Empire was weakened after World War I., but still became an expanding area and had decisive role in the world politics. The power and the authority of the Empire were often presenting on exhibitions, in the theatre, on paintings, posters, in schoolbooks, in literature for children, on radio or in the much developing film industry. People of all ages were attracted by films and cinemas could affect people either with propaganda's film or with adventure films. In my thesis I look closely on the age of New Imperialism in Great Britain and consider why it was the film industry where values typical of 19th century such as militarism, patriotism or Social Darwinism remained even after the World War I. Further I focus on how British cinematography dealt with the rising Hollywood production and explore the influence of government support (Cinematographic Film Bill, film department of Empire Marketing Board, film production of General Post Office) on British film production. The aim of the thesis is examining the theme of British propaganda in the film in the Czech surroundings. Next aim is explaining reasons which head towards to propagate the values of the British Empire in...
Time in Film. Comparison of the Conception of Jan Mukařovský and Gilles Deleuze
Kadlecová, Vladimíra ; Fišerová, Michaela (advisor) ; Michalovič, Peter (referee)
The topic of my diploma thesis is a comparison of speculation about a film from two perspectives. Firstly, it deals with the approach of Jan Mukařovský, a Czech structuralist, who was one of the first in the Czech context to explore the time concept in a film. Secondly, it considers the approach of Gillese Deleuze, who was accredited with the new view on the time-image in a film, however, much later than Jan Mukařovský. The aim of the paper is to explain the way the approaches of Mukařovský and Deluze relate to other approaches of thinking about time in films, the influence of other concepts of their time that they both theoretically based their views on, as well as specifying the films that became the starting points of exploring the time in films. The method of comparison is divided into three aspects, as three comparison levels.
Energy efficient building of cinema and gallery
Kučírek, Pavel ; Jelínek, Ondřej (referee) ; Blasinski, Petr (advisor)
The aim of the master project is to design a new building of the cinema with gallery and to design technical equipment. The building is „L“ shaped, the half of the building is single-storey and the other half is two-storey, there is no basement. The most important rooms are on the ground floor – gallery, cinema, foyer and staff rooms. On the second floor there is projector room, sound engineer room, recording room and other sound adjusting rooms. The vertical loadbearing and non-loadbearing walls are designed from aerated concrete blocks, horizontal structure are cast-in-place reinforced slabs, the roof is flat. There is a reinforced concrete staircase that leads to the second floor, the building is insulated by ETICS. There are 4 HVAC units designed in the building, units are controlled with monitoring and controlling unit, also there are photovoltaics and rainwater storage systems designed. The project and visualizations were made in the ArchiCAD, MS excel, DEK, Halton HIT, AeroCAD software. Experiment validates measured data with mathematical analytics model that I used in 7 theoretical models of ventilator controlling possibilities to achieve energy savings. Re-sults will be compared and assessed.

Jandová, Eva ; Kopec, Jakub (referee) ; Vítek, Jiří (advisor)
The aim of this work is to research the relationships between abstract musical space and physical space, to explore the various possibilities of connecting sound, light and matter in space, their interaction and unfolding over time. The knowledge and outputs will later be applied in the design of a cultural object providing a visual and acoustic experience with an emphasis on human perception.
Within and Without: Ideology, Cinema, and Yugoslavia in the 1960s and 1980s
Basanovic, Pavle ; Šístek, František (advisor) ; Žíla, Ondřej (referee)
This thesis analyzes the socio-political function of cinema in Yugoslavia during its two most vibrant eras, the 1960s and 1980s. Film in Yugoslavia existed on a materially state centered model yet presented an ideological plurality in its filmic representativeness that offers a richer and more dynamic understanding of the Yugoslav state. This thesis proposes that by looking at Yugoslav film from its inception following world war two until its dissolution in the early 1990s reveals a fascinating ideological trajectory reflected in the evolving contours of the socio- political and economic make-up of Yugoslavia.
Air conditioning of the cinema
Kučírek, Pavel ; Jelínek, Ondřej (referee) ; Blasinski, Petr (advisor)
The topic of this bachelor’s thesis is design of three air conditioner units for cinema with technical utility rooms, base for workers and gallery. The devices are designed to meet the operating, hygienic and functional requirements for internal microclimate. The main role of air conditioning devices is air supplying for visitors in sufficient amount, eliminating thermal loads in summer, covering thermal losses and humidification during winter. The theoretical part is focused on internal microclimate.
The comparasion of the status of journalists in the American and the Czech audiovisual pop culture
Svoboda, Martin ; Láb, Filip (advisor) ; Malý, Radek (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to compare the use of journalists as characters in Czech and US audiovisual industry, primarily cinema. As expected, the work finds that Czech cinema cannot compare with American in volume. Also, different history has led to a completely different position of journalists in culture and popular culture in both regions. The thesis tries to introduce both systems and look for reasons of absence of journalistic characters in Czech cinema. It also examines the way in which cinema is able to communicate at all and what demands can we have on the dialogue between piece of art and us. The thesis deals with the transformation of journalistic profession into genre and archetype in American mainstream cinema. The ambition of the work, which in many respects compares the present with the absence, is to describe the space in which the observed presence and absence take place. The main difficulty in elaborating the topic is the marginal size of the Czech market compared to the American and even more marginal use of the journalist as a prominent figure in it. Therefore, the thesis tries to explain why the situation with the help of professional literature rather than mapping the explicit presence of journalism in narratives of Czech and Czechoslovak films. Since Czech cinema has in many...
