Struggle for the right to the city: Alternative spaces in post-socialist Prague
Pixová, Michaela ; Sýkora, Luděk (advisor) ; Jehlička, Petr (referee) ; Ferenčuhová, Slávomíra (referee)
The dissertation focuses on spaces in post-socialist Prague which transcend the hegemony of capitalist social and spatial relations and provide alternative spaces for non-profit culture and grassroots activities used and operated by students, artistic and creative communities, alternative subcultures, and NGOs. The author presents 14 case studies focused on these spaces, whose existence in the city is threatened. Referring to Marxian urban theory and the concept of the right to the city, the author critically investigates the democratic character of the social structures which are based on the contemporary socioeconomic model, and interprets the way in which the imperative of capital-accumulation, combined with the legacies of the totalitarian past, constrain the development of open democracy and civil society, and the creation of diverse, vibrant, progressive, and socially inclusive urban environments. The empirical part of the dissertation outlines the process of creating and operating alternative spaces in Prague during a changing political-economic context, and describes in detail, alternative spaces that existed in Prague in the early 21st century. The author discusses these spaces in relation to two different regimes, which existed in Czech society before and after the Velvet Revolution in...

Drbal, Vlastimil ; Royt, Jan (advisor) ; Vavřínek, Vladimír (referee) ; Olszewski, Marek Titien (referee)
The thesis deals with selected aspects of iconography of Syrian mosaics in Late Antiquity (3th - 6th centuries AD). This topic is studied both in the context of the Late Antique history, art and society and in the context of the general research of Late Antique mosaics. The Late Antique Period in Eastem Mediterranean is concidered on one hand a period linked clo sely with the Classical period, on the other hand it reflects - influenced by the Neoplatonism and Christianity - some new trends. In the first chapter, I define the Late Antique period and the Late Antique art. I draw the attention to the fact of continuity of the Antique civilisation in the Eastem Mediterranean, especially in Syria. I sketch the history of Syria in this period, depicting the characteristic features of this territory. I focuse on the archaeological sites were we can find the mosaics further described in detail (Apamea, Palmyra, Shahba-Philippopolis). I also show an outline of the Late Antique mosaics in the Mediterranean and in Syria as a framework for the undermentioned mosaics. Then, I generally characterize what is the basis for the interpretation of the mosaics in that period. The mosaic panels show at first sight the same scenes of the Pagan myths or other scenes of the famous Pagan figures (e.g. Socrates). Only after an...

The ways of the contemporary Tunisian poetry
Lišková, Iva ; Oliverius, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Kučera, Petr (referee) ; Petrová, Jana (referee)
The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to outline the main trends in the contemporary Tunisian poetry, present it in its variety and colour, and testify to its parity with larger Arabic national literatures. Making use of different theoretical frameworks offered by the modern literary science, the major part of the thesis is given to interpretation of selected poetry collections written by different authors over the period from the early 1990s to the present day. The interpretation is divided into five "currents" reflecting five distinctive sources of inspiration, which, nevertheless, often merge and overlap. The first chapter of the analytical part is interested in collections responding in one way or another to the political situation in Tunisia or other Arabic countries. The second chapter focuses on collections that link the classical Sufi poetry heritage with modern poetic trends. The third chapter is given to surrealism. Covered by the fourth chapter, another "current" of the contemporary Tunisian poetry is fed by fairy tales, legends and myths of both Arabic and other origin. The final analytical chapter follows the current of lyrical love poetry.

Czech techno subculture on change of the century
Zeman, Daniel ; Pargač, Jan (advisor) ; Tomandl, Miloš (referee)
Techno subculture has often been discussed in public and media in the last decade. Police intervention during CZECHTEK 2005 raised the question within the excited discussion: "What is the essence of techno"? The overflow of unprofessional explanations published in media, following the incident, created the demand on serious explanation of the phenomenon. This work tries to explain the phenomenon of subcultures genesis with the help of theory outlined by Van Gennep and further extended by Victor Turner, i.e. subcultures are understood as archetypal continuation of initiation rituals in modern industrial society. Techno party is a ritual way how to create the anti-structure area and establish a liminoid environment in which the adolescents realize their relativity through the changed status of mind and they develop the attitudes to each other as well as within the society. As any social phenomenon fulfils more functions at the same time, this interpretation must be considered as one of the possible explanations. Furthermore also the work of Michel Maffesoli and the idea of neotribalism are taken into consideration. This work also reflects the evolution of subcultures from the beginning to the present and at the same time it reflects the studies of the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in Birmingham and...
