4-Coalition- anomaly or the expression of the systemic tendency? Case study of the Czech party system
Hanáček, Vladimír ; Bureš, Jan (advisor) ; Koubek, Jiří (referee)
v anglickém jazyce: This study focuses on the analysis of former Czech political project of "4-Coalition", which was established by four Czech oppositional parties (KDU-ČSL, US, ODA and DEU) in the years 1998 - 2002. This analysis is done through the case study, which focuses on the development of "4-Coalition" in its three developmental stages: from the cooperation of the sovereign parties, throw the formalized platform of party cooperation to the project of "4- Coalition" as a peculiar actor of the Czech politics. The analysis of ideological background, program and personnel questions shows the potential tensions, that arose inside of "4- Coalition", gives them in the appropriate historical context and analyses its causes. These tensions together with the external factors are viewed as a fundamental cause of the final failure of the project of "4-Coalition" and its disintegration. The aim of this study is to answer the question, whether it is possible in party system perspective to speak about "4-Coalition" as a potential third pole of the Czech party system, or whether it is anomaly, which the systemic tendency to the bipolar configuration doesn't infringe. With regard to the continuing relevance of only one left-right dimension of the party competition and the completion of the project of so...
The Influence of Natural Resource Dependency on US Foreign Policy. Case Study: the Persian Gulf War
Ducháč, Tomáš ; Žídková, Markéta (advisor) ; Binhack, Petr (referee)
The goal of this work is to analyze what role the dependence on natural resources played in US foreign policy in the Persian Gulf War. Natural resources and especially oil were inseparable component of the US economic development from the second part of the 20th century. Regardless of the continuous effort of government administration the US was not able reduce its dependency on import of foreign resources. The reliance on world market and the effort to control its dependency through the control of natural resources located beyond the US boarders led to the projection of these issues to the US foreign policy. The first chapter of the work is theoretical and deals with the views of particular authors on the determinants of US foreign policy in regard to natural resources. The situation of the US was characterized by hegemonic position, which enabled the US to pursue its interest on a global scale. The second chapter analyses the development of US natural resource dependency in respect to the US economy from the beginning of the 20th century to the Persian Gulf War. The chapter identifies the most important natural resources and the strategic significance of the Persian Gulf. The final chapter evaluates the role natural resources had on America's decision to enter the war.
Geopolitical impact of China's search for energy on the Indian Ocean and South China Sea
Rodd, William ; Hrishabh, Sandilya (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
This thesis examines the geopolitical consequences of China's search for energy resources on the Indian Ocean and South China Sea. It provides a brief outline of the energy situation of the world as a whole, specifically how it is becoming a more globalized and singular market. This change is occurring at the same time as a pronounced shift away from the traditional measurements of 'power' towards 'softer' more subtle definitions. There is a brief section outlining the geopolitical teachings of Alfred T. Mahan, specifically how he advocated seapower primarily for the purpose of providing the stability and security necessary for trade. Chinese analysts have been embracing the teachings of Mahan, but also interpreting them in a way that justifies the naval buildup Beijing has been embarking on in recent years. The paper briefly looks at the potential sources that China could turn to meet its energy needs, but concludes that it will have to rely on oil for the foreseeable future. It then attempts to define overall Chinese interests, specifically how nearly all of these relate somehow to energy security, thus underlining the importance of this topic to leaders in Beijing. The last half of the work delves into a geopolitical analysis of the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, and how militarization in the...
The war in Mexico and its possible solutions
Tomišková, Lucie ; Kochan, Jan (advisor) ; Žáková, Gabriela (referee)
For ten years, the Mexican government is fighting against the drug cartels. The beginnings of the drug war began in 2006 when Felipe Calderon officially declared war on organized crime in Mexico, also known as the war on drugs. The aim is to analyze the various actors involved in the drug conflict, determine their status and individual roles. The entire work is also meant to evaluate possible solutions, the positive and negative aspects and summarize final thoughts. The first part contains an introduction to the origins of the drugs and the implementation of the drug production in Mexico. Another chapter is devoted to the actors themselves: the Mexican government, drug cartels and the US. Emphasized is especially their role in the conflict and their development. The second half of the work deals with the drug war itself, about its progress and obstacles. The final chapter describes possible solutions through which the Mexican government could win the drug war.
The effect of diplomacy in the field of international relations - a case study of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis
Madarászová, Alexandra ; Lehmannová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Voráček, Emil (referee)
Diplomacy is the primary tool for solutions of international conflicts. Its importance can be seen in many historical events, where important political figures were able to agree on compromises and jointly prevent war. Whether it was the Peace of Westphalia terminating the 30-year war conference in Genoa and then signed the Treaty of Rapallo on the readmission of Germany and the Soviet Union in a global world, or the creation of integration structures (NATO and the United Nations), whose primary objective was to maintain international peace and security, all events were a matter of diplomatic means preferences against those military. Thesis deals with this issue applied in the case study of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. The author focuses on the role and importance of diplomacy in this conflict, its possibilities and limits in its possession and the ways in which diplomacy could prevent current tentions. A significant part of the work lies in the international position of the EU Member States to the conflict and split view prevailing in the US.
Risk Analysis of Sino-American Military Conflict: The Trends in China-US Military Relationship
Šetina, Martin ; Maslowski, Nicolas (advisor) ; Rolenc, Jan Martin (referee)
The ascent of China to a global power status has created a new wave of theoretical discourse on what this means for the future of international relations. The general consensus on a unipolar order of international relations is slowly giving way to discourse. The time of polarity shift in the system is associated with a likely conflict between the descending hegemon and the ascending power (Snyder 2002; Mearsheimer 2010). This theoretical background suggest that in the future, we might witness a military conflict between the US and China. On the other side of the spectrum is a more optimistic view of China's rise, which emphasizes the role of economic interdependence and the extreme cost of any aggressive foreign policy that would escalate the conflict potential between China and the US (Ikenberry 2008; Kang 2007; Fravel 2010). This assumption of a future military conflict between the US and China is at the center of this research. In the following pages I will explore the idea of a military conflict between the US and China in an in-depth analysis of the most contested and conflict-prone issues between China and the US: the future of Taiwan and the Senkaku Island dispute.
