Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries
Prchal, Tomáš ; Durdisová, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Kubelková, Karina (referee)
Poverty is a serious problem of the contemporary world. According to the World Bank statistics more than 1/6 of the world's population suffers from extreme poverty (with daily income less than 1,25 dollars). The main tool of poverty alleviation is the official development aid, which is based on transfers of funds from developed to developing countries. The aim of this thesis is to assess, by how far has the development aid been succesful in reducing the poverty. The analysis of two regions -- East Asia and Sub-saharan Afrika -- will serve this purpose. In East Asia the poverty was reduced by 750 million of people within 25 years. However, the role of development aid was found to be negligible. Sub-saharan Africa, despite large volumes of aid, didn't experience any decrease in poverty incidence at all. The analysis implied that official development aid is not a way out of poverty. The solution is to integrate developing countries to international trade and to follow convenient economic policies establishing an environment favourable to business and foreign direct investments.

Collaborative Planning in Modern Supply Chain
Nýdlová, Olga ; Halík, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Utzel, Christian (referee)
This master thesis describes and proves how companies can improve their operational performance and supplier relationships by using modern collaborative and planning practices, specifically the Collaborative Planning Forecasting and Replenishment (CPFR) concept. The theoretical part depicts main developments in supply chain planning over time, shows common challenges in the world of supply chain and offers possible solutions in terms of collaborative supply chain planning practices. The practical part analyzes the CPFR process between one of the leading providers of telecommunications services T-Mobile and its major mobile handset supplier Nokia. The concluding part defines gaps between an ideal to-be process of supply chain collaboration and the status quo process. Status quo benefits of current CPFR processes are described as well.

Essays in Applied Microeconomics: School Admission Mechanisms and Corporate Bankrupcy
Knot, Ondřej ; Roland, Gérard (advisor) ; Švejnar, Jan (referee) ; Filer, Randall (referee)
In my dissertation, I address two topics in applied microeconomics. First two chapters deal with the functioning of school admission mechanisms and their affects on student school choice behavior. Third chapter deals with the question of optimal bankruptcy law design. Pupil-school matching mechanisms play a critical role in the schooling system. They affect the behavior of students and-through the information they convey-also the behavior of the schools and the authorities responsible for education policy. In the first chapter (joint with Daniel Münich), using a computational simulation model, we analyze the functioning of an admission scheme used in the Czech Republic as a prototype of decentralized, ability-based admission schemes widely used in the world to assign pupils to upper-secondary schools. Our findings show large incidence of strategic misrepresentation of school preferences among applicants, large differences between revealed and trued demand, and large incidence of justified envy in the resulting matching. We point out several implication this could have for functioning of schooling systems. In the second chapter, I empirically study the behavior of students under the Czech pupil-school matching mechanism. Using district-level data on demand for public gymnasia, I find significant evidence...

Anti-Corruption Mechanism in Economic Models of Corruption
Krajčová, Jana ; Ortmann, Andreas (advisor) ; Frank, Bjorn (referee) ; Spagnolo, Giancarlo (referee)
This dissertation consists of three chapters that, theoretically and experimentally, address the effectiveness of anti-corruption mechanisms. In the first chapter, I analyze the effects of monitoring on an agent's incentives in a two-period principal-agent model in which the agent decides on his effort and corruptibility. The agent's type and strategy are unknown to the principal. I compare incentive-compatible wages under three different scenarios: 1) the principal does not monitor and only observes output; 2) the principal monitors the agent's effort choice; and 3) the principal monitors the agent's corruptibility. I find that monitoring of effort improves the sorting of types but it might also give the agent more incentive to be corrupt. Monitoring of corruption does not improve the sorting of types but it negatively affects the agent's incentive to be corrupt. In the second and in the third chapter I analyze experimentally how promising as anti-corruption measures leniency policies really are. Buccirossi and Spagnolo (2006) had conjectured, based on theoretical work, that ill-designed legal environments might, in fact, produce results that contradict the intentions of the designers of the leniency policies. And, indeed, I demonstrate, for the first time as far as I know, that real-world subjects...

Impacts of drug trade in select states of Latin America
Kmetíková, Nina ; Písař, Pavel (advisor) ; Lipka, David (referee)
In the introduction of my thesis, devoted to the drug trade in select states of Latin America, I will address the topic of cocaine and its history. This is important for understanding the significance of the drug in the world, and -- especially in Latin America -- for comprehending that in these countries cocaine has such a strong tradition that attempts to prevent the cultivation of coca and subsequent trade with the drug will probably never succeed. I will further examine the economic and social situations in countries of Latin America and emphasize the fact that people there often have no other alternative than to engage in criminal activities, again for the most part related to cocaine. I will evaluate anti-drug policies in select Latin American countries and their effectiveness -- or rather ineffectiveness -- and conversely attempt to describe how great an influence the narco-mafia has on the economics and politics of given states and on their representatives. I intend to focus my thesis primarily on three Latin American states: Colombia, as the largest supplier of cocaine; Mexico, which is the primary transit country, through which drugs travel from Colombia to the United States, and Brazil, where children's gangs connected with drugs form.
