Curse or Blessing: natural resources and economic growth - comparison of the development of Botswana, Nigeria, Norway and Canada in early 21st century
Zubíková, Adéla ; Chytil, Zdeněk (advisor) ; Zeman, Karel (referee)
This thesis seeks to verify the concept of so-called resource curse at the beginning of the new millennium. The theoretical part defines the symptoms of the alleged curse, curse transmission channels and criticism of the concept. Compared to other studies dealing with the theme of the resource curse this work is not focused on just one transmission channel. The practical part verifies several hypotheses established by comparing research papers on impacts of natural resources. The validity of the Prebisch-Singer hypothesis, Dutch disease symptoms and a negative impact on political institutions (inclination toward authoritarianism, high level of corruption, high government spending, low efficiency of economic and political decision-making and low investment in education) is verified. For the analysis have been selected two African countries (Nigeria and Botswana) and two advanced countries (Canada and Norway). The last part of this thesis provides policy implications. The results confirm the Prebisch-Singer hypothesis for selected commodities in the long term and some of the symptoms of Dutch disease at the beginning of the new millennium. Hypotheses regarding the impact on the political institutions have not been confirmed, since the results varied across the countries. The high vulnerability of the countries to movements in commodity prices was found.

Do they really matter? Impact of NGOs on European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR)
Kárníková, Anna ; Rovná, Lenka (advisor) ; Weiss, Tomáš (referee)
This master thesis analyses factors determining success of civil society organisations lobbying for the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights. The research focuses on the reform of the instrument between 2006 and 2007 which took place within the overall reform of EU's external action instruments. The EIDHR is delivered mainly through civil society and is thus an important source of funding for civil society organisations. Additionally, due to the central position of NGOs in the instrument's delivery, their input is crucial for ensuring strategic quality of the instrument. In order to exert influence, the organisations have to penetrate the complex decision-making system. This thesis scrutinises their strategies as well as analyses the institutional framework and its impact on the civil society organisations. The research builds on several complementary theoretical approaches including theory of lobbying, political opportunity structures or new institutionalism. Using the process-tracing method, this thesis analyses causal mechanisms linking interests of civil society groups and changes in the EIDHR programming documents. In order to test the hypotheses it looks into three sub-cases studies focusing on three different areas of EIDHR: democracy promotion, peacebuilding and human rights defenders.

Relation among cloudiness, meteorological conditions, and orography in the region of Krušné hory Mts.
Rajtmajer, Jakub ; Müller, Miloslav (advisor) ; Sedlák, Pavel (referee)
The work deals with relation of cloudiness and orography with regards to meteorological conditions. The Flow over mountains affects the clouds according to the atmospheric stratification and velocity of flow in addition to the shape and the size of the obstacle. The next influence is the intensification of radiation. During daytime it affects cumulus clouds, during nighttime mainly fog and low clouds. Datasets of cloud cover from meteorological stations with different altitude and location considering the position of mountain ridge are used to evaluate cloudiness of Krušné hory region. These are Gera- Leumnitz, Fichtelberg, Kopisty, Milešovka. Annual cycle of cloudiness is characterized by two minims, first at the end of April, second at the beginning of September. The most uniform distribution of cloud cover during the year appears at the station with highest altitude - Fichtelberg. The influence of orography discussed in theoretical part occurred mostly in interaction of radiation, geomorphology and anthropogenic activities in Mostecká pánev region because meteorological station Kopisty dominates in cloud cover from November to January, from March to September it has the lowest cloud cover. key words: cloudiness, orography, Krušné hory, stability of stratification, flow, radiation

Homegrown stereotyping: the shaping of Canadian consciousness through television broadcasting
Prosečová, Lenka ; Kolinská, Klára (advisor) ; Jindra, Miroslav (referee)
To define Canada and the Canadian nation is no easy task. From a historical perspective, Canada is a very young country: until 1949 there was no Canadian citizenship, the Canadian flag appeared as late as 1965, and it wasn't until 1967 that the Canadian national anthem could be heard. Although Canada would thereafter finally seem to have been able to establish its distinct identity in opposition to its mother country, Canadian patriotism has continued to be problematic. Despite years of efforts to form a pan-Canadian identity - characterized especially by Pierre Trudeau's attempts to institute federal bilingualism and a pan-Canadian identity rooted in liberal individualism - the existence of a self-conscious Canadian nation remains questionable. Within the Canadian Anglophone population there seems to be no unified notion of a panCanadian nation and thus no innate nationalism. Furthermore, for the rest of the world, Canada remains a mystery, an "Unknown Country."] Arthur Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven, assessed the situation as follows: "after 1919 most creative people, whether in painting, writing or music, began to have a guilty feeling that Canada was as yet unwritten, unpainted, unsung [ ... ],,2 Indeed, efforts were made to "capture" Canada in paintings, photography, in poetry and prose, in...
