The depiction of the changing consciousness of women in three novels of the turn of the century
Potočková, Kristýna ; Veselá, Pavla (advisor) ; Roraback, Erik Sherman (referee)
The aim of this work is to document how the substantial change in the social status of women that took place at the turn of the twentieth century is reflected in three novels of that period, The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James, The Awakening by Kate Chopin and The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, and in the lives of the authors. The essential and common themes of these texts are marriage and motherhood, the two institutions which reflect the most the changing consciousness of women. The historical background of the period provides evidence for the division of roles in the marital institution, which was strongly established in the preceding centuries, and for the unequal position of women in general, resulting from the male superiority, mostly fortified by men's financial dominance. The heroines, akin to the authors, come from the upper or upper-middle classes which were the most active in the feminist movement because these classes had time and education to assess the situation and propose transformations. Art and sexuality are in various ways essential to the process of self-realization. The creative and sexual drives can be both an opportunity for a woman's liberation as well as an incentive for rejecting to submit to men that is enforced by men's habit of collecting works of art (inclusive of women) or...

Exile journal Sklizeň
Kmochová, Radka ; Holý, Jiří (advisor) ; Špirit, Michael (referee)
The chief subject of this work is an annotated bibliography for the exile magazine Sklizeň. Besides the bibliography the work also contains an introductory reflection which, in part, focuses more generally on exile and the situation of Czech culture in exile after 1948, and in part introduces the magazine itself in more detail. Since the magazine was published for over ten years, the bibliography is relatively substantial. Each contribution is complemented with an annotation and has its own bibliographical reference number. Classified advertisements, unsolicited material and illustrated and text supplements are not referenced. Missing headings of some contributions, apart from minor items, are replaced in the annotation by the opening words of the item. For minor items, which often consist of only one sentence, the headline is not replaced by the opening words but the content of the item is given briefly in note form. In the part of an entry relating to the content label of the contributions we occasionally quote the editorial comments published in Sklizeň. We have chosen extracts which show the history of the text in more detail or convey the content of the articles. Three full stops indicates passages left out. The bibliography of the articles is supplemented by: an index of authors; a subject index by...

He concludes the problem of "culture versus nature" duality on the example of philosophical and historical research on the cultural basis of ecological crisis. He follows describing the birth of early conservationist movement (H. Thoreau, J. Muir), ecological ethic (A. Schweitzer) and transformation of this concepts into various fields: ecofeminism, social ecology (M. Bookchin) and deep ecology (A. Naess). Author reflects the position of environmental issues in the academic discussion as well as the incorporation of the ecological concepts into sociological theory (environmental sociology). In the final part of the paper the issue of individual life-style reflection of the environmental problems is opened, using the conception of "voluntary simplicity" (D. The paper is finished with critical views on the "voluntary simplicity" phenomenon, the issue of "privatization of the ecological crisis" and commercionalization of the ecological lifestyle.

Companies in private international law
Štaňko, Andrej ; Brodec, Jan (referee) ; Pauknerová, Monika (advisor)
Companies in International Private Law Private companies are acting in the international context much more intensively than in any time before. There are many ways how to act on the international market. One of the solutions is to establish a branch or a representation office instead of establishing a brand new company. The right to act in the international context using branch companies is known as the freedom of establishment. There were numerous discussions and cases concerning the topic of the freedom of establishment. The main dispute arose on the ground of the different approach between two main theories - the seat theory and incorporation theory. The diploma thesis in your hand covers main issues concerning the freedom of establishment and it also discusses the case law provided by the European Court of Justice. The author uses the comparative view of the seat and incorporation theories. With a greater detail to the Czech law, the issue of the foreign companies' recognition is discussed. The Czech law recognizes foreign companies even in the form in which it is no longer possible to establish new company in the Czech Republic. In this regard basic elements of the bare trust estblished under the law of Guernsey are discussed. The case law of the European Court of Justice opened Europe's...

Typology of Quasi-states
Riegl, Martin ; Hnízdo, Bořivoj (advisor) ; Romancov, Michael (referee)
Subject of my diploma thesis is typology of quasi-states. I primarily clarify and explain the defnition of sovereign states. After that I focus on the definition of quasi-state, which is in its fundamentals a deviation from a sovereign state. I define four basic categories of quasi-states based on analysis of international community during the active presence of UN, which reflect missing attributes of gregariousness at individual quasi-states. These are not meeting the geographical (experiental) charakteristics of gregariousness, partial limitations or full absence of internal sovereignty, partial limitations or full absence of external sovereignty or limitation of both internal and external sovereignty. I section these four categories into further subcategories. These break up the quasi-states according specific characteristics in given subcategories. There is a general description of characteritical trait at each subcategory that belong into the subcategory. Subsequently brief analytical case studies are being produced for each subcategory. Their objective is to clcarify specific traits of each subcategory and substantiate the presumed typology I conclude that in the times of UN we can witness steep growth of sovereign states, which have been very weak already at the time of its establishment. This...
