This diploma thesis deals with the status and development of Czechoslovak sport journalism in daily newspapers between years 1918 and 1928. It is based on studies of five period newspapers - Národní listy, Lidové noviny, Národní politika, Právo lidu and České slovo. One part of the analysis focuses on the people who wrote sport articles in those newspapers, if the sport journalism was their only specialization. Diploma thesis Journalists and Public Opinion Polls: Media Representation of Public Opinion in the case of the First Direct Presidental Election in Czech Republic deals with an issue of media representation of public opinion polls and journalists' attitudes towards these polls. From the theoretical point of view this thesis focuses on definition of concepts such as public and public opinion, examination of how these concepts are approached within public opinion polls and investigation of possible influence of mediated public opinion polls on recipient of media messages. The main part of this thesis describes results of academic studies that address an issue of media coverage of pre-election polls. Analytic part is divided into two parts. The first part deals with media content analysis, the second one deals with journalists' attitudes towards polls. We can conclude that interviewed journalists are rather skeptical about public opinion polls while this scepticism is not followed by critical interpretation of pre-election poll results. This conclusion rises a question why journalists' sceptical attitude doesn't correspond with media coverage of polls that was found rather uncritical. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Štěpánková, Anna ; Němcová Tejkalová, Alice (advisor) ; Hájek, Roman (referee)
This thesis deals with the safety of war correspondents, especially during the first Chechen war. In the beginning of a theoretical part, I describe the conflict from a historical perspective. I mention its precedence, course and aftermath. Then I describe the war through the eyes of war correspondents, who had witnessed the war and described their experience in books. I am also concerned with a development of the protection of the war correspondents. I mention laws, declarations and studies that have dealt with their safety both in the 20th century and in recent years. Furthermore, based on a research of the literature I examine the preparation courses for military conflicts, safety rules and equipment that they had during wars. I primarily focus on the conflict in Chechnya. An analytical part is based on interviews with three Czech journalists who worked in the first Chechen war. I talked with them about safety rules that they had followed, facilities that they had been provided with, their financial situation, and overall problems that they had had to deal with. The journalists were supposed to compare the conditions under that they had been working with the ones of their foreigner peers. I also asked them how they had psychically recovered from the war experiences. The agenda is also...
Legal protection of journalists in an armed conflict
Benešová, Barbara ; Bílková, Veronika (advisor) ; Balaš, Vladimír (referee)
The diploma thesis is concerned with the protection of journalists in armed conflicts. From my point of view this topic is relevant in connection with the recent war in Iraq and many other conflicts of local character. Many professionals in the world deal with this issue but in our country almost nobody opens it, with a few exceptions. The aim of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive overview of the protection of journalists in armed conflicts - it means the applicable legislation and also proposals of new regulation. The main question is whether applicable law is adequate to provide an appropriate protection for journalists and news media personnel in armed conflicts. I suggest a new convention, which contains a special status for journalists and determines a protective emblem for them, should be adopted and in this thesis This thesis is composed of thirteen chapters which are subsequently divided into subchapters. It consists of two main parts. The first one focuses on applicable rules - especially Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949. The beginning of this part is concerned with the interpretation of the term "journalist" and then briefly describes a history of the protection of journalists in armed conflicts. These two chapters are followed by the third one, which...

Czech Union of Journalists during The Prague Spring
Suková, Jana ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Končelík, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor thesis describes the Czech Union of Journalists in the Prague Spring. The aim is not only to analyze details of the situation in the Union of Journalists, who in 1968 went trough a major ideological change, but also on the issue of the journalists in the long term. I want to focus on the development of Union in 1968 and attempt to find answers to these questions: When did the Union became the authority that supported the reform ideas of the late 60's? Why there was a break between the members of the journalistic organization? In addition this work should uncover the relationship between the general development of the situation in Czechoslovakia and the Union of Journalists, to explain some of the attitudes of journalistic organization at the time. Finally, the work does not neglect neither media area as Czechoslovak Television, Czechoslovak Radio and all printed materials which were always shaped mainly by journalists. Therefore this work deals with the close relationship between the Union of journalists and media in general. Especially, this relationship in my work is raised during the first days of the occupation that Czechoslovakia affected on 21st August 1968, during which the media, thanks to relentless work of journalists, has become indispensable organizers of social events.
