Psychosocial situation of siblings of chronically ill children

Chronic illness of a child has an influence over the whole family system. Despite this fact healthy siblings have been overlooked by the majority of research. Some foreign studies declare that this population is in higher risk of developing psychsocial problems. The purpose of this thesis is to conduct a closer study on psychosocial characteristics of the siblings of children with diabetes mellitus type 1. The main concern of the theoretical part is the review of current literature dealing with the topic of siblings of chronically ill child and their families. The conducted research included quantitative and qualitative methods exploring sibling psychosocial problems and prosocial behaviour, self-esteem, siblings attitude towards illness and family functioning. The results stress out the important relationship between sibling adjustment, self-esteem and individual and family characteristics. The results also present the main themes connected with siblings feeling of fear, sadness and anger, with applied coping strategies and perceived rewards and costs of the illness for family. The role of older siblings and their influence on development of younger siblings

When analyzing the development of children and adolescents, the most attention is usually paid to parents. Other older members of a family, however, have an important role, too. The crucial, yet often neglected person (at least in Czech literature), impacting the development of an individual, is his or her older sibling. The subject of the theoretical part of this thesis is to clarify the specifics of a sibling relationship as well as to describe the role and the sphere of influence of the older sibling considering all the factors that come into the relationship between two siblings. The empirical part consists of the description of the research project and the results of the research, whose aim is to discover the specifics of a sibling relationship with a particular focus on the upbringing styles of the older sibling; to find differences between the upbringing methods of parents and the upbringing methods of older siblings; and to find out to what extent the gender and the age difference between siblings determines their mutual relationship. Healthy siblings of children with physical disease (focused on oncological disease)

This thesis is dealing with up to now greatly neglect topic of healthy siblings of children with oncological disease. It is indicative of hard adaptation to this diagnosis not only for patient and his parents but also for his sibling. The aim of the theoretical part is an exploration of mainly foreign literature about this topic and summarize its present information. The first chapter is focused on demands of oncological disease and its impact on family life. Next chapters are engaged in specific problems of healthy sibling resulting from oncological disease in family and their potential negative results or benefits. Also it is outlined how the adaptation of a sibling of an ill child is contingent and how it is posibble to make it easier. The aim of the research project in the practical part is an exploration of psychosocial function and perception of oncological disease in family of healthy adolescent siblings in Czech population. The bachelor thesis discusses how the biological children of foster parents accept their new foster siblings and fostering of their parents from the view of the foster parents. The aim of this work is to find out if and how the biological children accept their new foster siblings, what are their relationships like, what are the problematic aspects of these relationships and how to prevent them.

The present Bachelor thesis deals with the general approaches and diverse forms of bilingual education of siblings in a bilingual family. The different research approaches will be defined in the work and their specific differences will be described. In the theoretical part of the Bachelor thesis is the comparison of scientific studies about the so-called mixed bilingualism from the perspective of different linguists. On section is dedicated to refute myths about early bilingualism that bear scientific grounds. The practical part of the Bachelor thesis is based on the collection of information in multilingual families with at least one parent whose native language is not the language of the social environ of the children. Part of the analysis is to create an accurate profile of the families in order to better describe and distinguish the specific results of the different families. The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to state important factors that can lead to an advanced symmetrical or asymmetrical use of the languages for bilingual children, as well as to inspire bilingual families with the case studies on what approach can be used to raise bilingual children.
Psychosocial situation of siblings of children with disabilities

The thesis deals with a psychosocial situation of siblings of children with a pervasiv disorder. The labour surveys new findings about the autism and an effect of autistic child on its sibling in the theoretical part. The part devoted to the autism is mostly focused on neurobiological findings of this disease. The part about siblings is specialised in pieces of knowledge from available researches and describes the present condition of scientific knowledge. The empirical part describes a psychosocial situation of siblings of autistic children. A qualitative method was used during the research. The main used method is a test called "FAST" (Family System Test) and a follow-up interview. The diploma work goes towards a deeper understanding of a psychological and social situation of a healthy sibling. Detailed studies of cases which indicate possible risks resulting from living with an autistic child are presented in the project. There are also mentioned tendencies of further research progress. The bachelor work titled "Pros and Cons of being an Only child" examines the quality of life of only children and their perception of this role. It contains theory pertaining to this problem as well as qualitative research of six only children in the case study design. An individual in-depth interview method was used.
Leisure healthy siblings and their participation in family life with a sibling with a disability

This diploma thesis deals with the position, leisure time and life of a healthy sibling in a family which takes care of a family member with disabilities. The theoretical part is divided in four chapters, which are aimed at a family, a family with a disabled member, healthy siblings, constellations between siblings, the definition of leisure time, particular developmental psychological characteristics of healthy siblings and disabled siblings and also the actual division of disability. The practical part is based on qualitative research. Due to the semi-structured interviews it attempts to differentiate how the quality of leisure time and especially their own personal life is perceived by healthy siblings themselves.
Sister between brothers

This bachelor thesis deals with position of sisters in the sibling group of boys. The aim of this work is to gain insight into relationships between siblings especially into those between siblings of opposite sex and discover how growing up only with brothers affects the sister. The theoretical part is focused on various aspects of sibling relationships such as birth order, age gap between siblings and their gender. By using qualitative approach, the practical part tries to capture the experiences of girls who grow up in a sibling group of boys, its impact on them and relationships between them and their brothers. This part also tries to discover how girls experience the absence of a sister and if they look for someone to replace her with for example a close friend or a female relative. For research, the half-stuctured interview with four female respondents was used.
