Narrative strategies and the themes of Bildungsroman genre in Patrick McCabe's The Butcher Boy, Roddy Doyle's Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, Seamus Deane's Reading in the Dark and Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes
Bindasová, Barbara ; Pilný, Ondřej (referee) ; Wallace, Clare (advisor)
The approach and use of Bildungsroman in the context of Irish contemporary literature is subject to lively development and invention on the behalf of the writers, thus offering an interesting and wide field of study for the literary criticism. This study of four representative works serves only as an introduction into the subject and does not, by far, cover the whole area. Nevertheless, Patrick McCabe's The Butcher Boy, Roddy Doyle's Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, Seamus Deane's Reading in the Dark and Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes manage to cover and demonstrate the variety and richness of this genre in Irish literature. Each of the writers tackles the subject with distinctive innovation, each picking a different theme as the centre of their respective novels.

New documents
Douša, Jan ; KOLÁŘ, Viktor (advisor) ; BÁRTA, Jaroslav (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate on specific examples the most current documentary approaches in photography since 2000. The selection focuses on authors whose initial stimulus for their work comes from the fascination with the complexity and visuality of the outside world and from the urge to reflect on this fascination through the medium of photography. Purely conceptual and other approaches that use documentary photography merely as a platform for criticism and analysis of the medium of photography (with its relation to aesthetization or objectivity) are not included in this thesis. The selection of authors, due to the limited nature of the thesis, is not exhaustive. The thesis does not aim to serve as an overview, rather it presents a personal selection of representative authors balancing a wide scope of documentary approaches in their work. The latter include reinvented formal approaches derived from the tradition of the New Documents exhibition which I consider to be an important milestone in the post-war history of documentary photography, but also entirely fresh approaches, or new symbioses thereof. Historical context and critical discourse originating in the 1970s, which questions the documentary functions of photography in combination with aesthetization, create a background for the analysis of contemporary authors.

Spirituality in Seriously Ill and Dying Patients
Špaček, Martin ; Lachman, Jan (advisor) ; Keřkovský, Pavel (referee)
This thesis focuses on spirituality particularly in relation to dying and death. It aims to provide an introduction to spirituality for health care professionals - especially physicians - as well as to discuss possible ways of addressing spiritual concerns in complex care of patients. The secularization of modern society and technological advance in medicine have extensively marginalized death and dying. However, hospice movement and palliative care reintroduced a new model of "good death" and revived interest and recognition of spirituality of seriously ill and dying patients. Despite multiple official recommendations including World Health Organization statements spirituality has a low profile both in our society and health care system, spiritual issues are generally not considered in medical education or in training of allied professions. Spirituality - as well as religion - is a complex phenomenon and may be discovered and expressed in wide variety of ways, depending on cultural and religious traditions. Medical staff should be able to identify and address spiritual issues of importance to their patients, not only in the end-of-life issues but also during the course of treatment. The Irish Peasant Novels of Emily Lawless Hurrish: A Study & Grania: The Story of an Island
Bonnerová, Kateřina ; Wallace, Clare (advisor) ; Pilný, Ondřej (referee)
The Anglo-Irish writer, Emily Lawless (1845 - 1913), has not, in the period following her death, been a very well-known, or widely appreciated, author. At the end of the 19th century though, she was popular with the English reading public, mainly because of her two contemporary Irish peasant novels, Hurrish: A Study and Grania: The Story of an Island, in which she managed to awaken English society to the plight of the impoverished Irish peasant. As Emily Lawless has not been widely studied nor written about only until recently, my access to resources, both primary and secondary, is very much limited. For this reason, I was able to acquire only one of the novels (Hurrish) as a printed publication, while the other novel Grania was available to me only in an electronic version. While William Linn's dissertation "The Life and Works of the Hon. Emily Lawless, First Novelist of the Irish Literary Revival" has been a valuable source of all the details of Lawless's biography and writings in general, the critical articles have been only a few. These include the 1980s first critical "appreciations" after years of neglect, by Elizabeth Grubgeld and Betty Webb Brewer, and more recent essays of James Cahalan, Jacqueline Belanger and Heidi Hansson. This thesis will attempt to introduce the writer in terms of life...

Zdeněk Wirth, the first two periods of life
Uhlíková, Kristina ; Hlobil, Ivo (advisor) ; Biegel, Richard (referee) ; Štulc, Josef (referee)
Synopsis The work covers the first two periods of life of the art historian Zdeněk Wirth. Wirth was one of the most influential figures of Czech cultural history of the first half of 20th century. He significantly infuenced domestic art history, he became one of the most active trendsetters as regards Modem Style in architecture in Bohemia, and, last but not least, he had merit in a distinct strengthening of position of the club-based and state care of historical monuments. In the period between the two World Wars Wirth was able, due to his high position, exercise influence over other areas of Czechoslovak culture and science - history, archival science, librarianship, museums, art education, intemational cultural contacts, theatre, cinema. Wide range of his activities enabled not to discuss only questions related directly to his personality, but, at the same time, to consider overall development of domestic care of historical monuments in the period in question. Taking into account Wirth's scientific and organizational activities, the work examines also intellectual development of art historical sphere in our milieu then, functioning of art historical clubs and organizations, editor' s office practice of selected art historical periodicals, theoretical foundations of domestic conservationists and...

NEW ON THE „OLD“ – Brno, Bratislavská - Stará Corner
Vašut, Radka ; Bořecký, Petr (referee) ; Mléčka, Jan (advisor)
The specified plot is located close to the historical city centre of Brno, Zábrdovice, more specifically in the 'Bronx' area of Brno. This area has its own specific character, differing from the rest of the city. During the successive historical development the area has acquired a specific nature without typical city blocks. It is concentrated towards the inner courtyards, where various still functional services are located. The overall concept of the new urban development follows the current unique structure. My intention was to create a small 'town' within the city. A set of structures predominantly with residential function is included here. As a growing interest in living in this area is expected in the future, my effort was to design a great variety of housing that would be able to meet the demands of wide range of people. This diversity also complies with the requirements of anticipated future residents from different social or age groups. The whole concept is based on linking the buildings to their interior courtyards, which has been intended to become the heart of the project. The flats are mostly entered from the outside, from the open passages to the courtyards, or from the upper floor terraces. This way the anonymity of the local residents is reduced, while their safety and quality of community life increases.

Streamlining Production Processes in the TCPA Welding Shop
Vejvodová, Veronika ; Martínez, Felipe (advisor) ; Pivodová, Pavlína (referee)
The thesis deals with approaches to improving processes and with application of one to a selected production process. Currently, streamlining processes is of interest to many companies, not only manufacturing ones. The relevance of the topic is also evidenced by the number of publications devoted to this very issue. The aim of the thesis is to propose improvements in manufacturing processes in the welding shop through Jiskuhen activities used in Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile Czech s.r.o. The first part of the thesis defines terms related to processes and their management, followed by description of some of the widely used improvement approaches and their basic assumptions. The other part of the thesis focuses on the description of Jishuken activities and their subsequent practical application within the company. The thesis offers concrete proposals for improving processes and also recommendations for the management of these activities. This thesis demonstrates the philosophy of continuous improvement in the company, which serves as a reference point for other companies in the area of streamlining of processes.

Influence of albendazole on cell proliferation in vitro
Fišerová, Kateřina ; Szotáková, Barbora (advisor) ; Jirkovská, Anna (referee)
Charles University in Prague Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Biochemical Sciences Candidate: Bc. Kateřina Knoppová Supervisor: Doc. Ing. Barbora Szotáková, Ph.D. Supervisor specialist: RNDr. Věra Králová, Ph.D. Title of diploma thesis: Influence of albendazole on cell proliferation in vitro Albendazole (ABZ) is a benzimidazole anthelmintic widely used for the treatment of parasitic diseases in man and animals. The mechanism of action is based on inhibition of microtubule polymerization by binding of ABZ to the β-subunit of tubulin in parasites. As a result, it subsequently leads to the disruption of vital functions of the parasite and to its death. After elucidation of this mechanism, ABZ was tested as a potential anticancer agent. It has been shown that it is able to inhibit proliferation of some cancer cell lines. In this study, we examined the effect of ABZ on cell proliferation in vitro. For the purpose of our experiment we used cell lines derived from colorectal carcinoma - SW 480 and SW 620 together with a cell line NCM 460 isolated from normal colonic mucosa. The cells were treated with ABZ in the concentration range of 0.01 - 10 µM for 24, 48 and 72 hours. Cell viability was determined using WST-1 assay and Neutral Red Uptake Test (NRU). ABZ inhibited cell proliferation...

Growth and differentiation of human osteoblast-like cells on TI-6AL-4V alloy modified with anodization

Titanium and its alloys are widely used as hard tissue implants for their high biocompatibility and suitable physical properties. Along with other surface treatment methods, anodization technique is known to enhance osseointegration. The aim of this study is to evaluate the adhesion, growth and osteogenic differentiation of human osteoblast-like SAOS-2 cells on Ti-6Al-4V samples anodized in electrolytes composed of a stable volume of KOH (336.48 g/l) and variable volumes of liquid glass (124.47 g/l, 84,12 g/l and 37.38 g/l; samples s5, s6 and s7, respectively). Non-anodized Ti-6Al-4V samples, cell culture polystyrene (PS) and microscopic glass coverslips served as control materials. On days 2 and 4 after seeding, the cell number did not differ significantly among the tested samples. However, on day 7, the cell number on s6 samples reached the lowest values, which could be attributed to a non-homogeneous TiO2 film on s6 samples formed during anodization. Nevertheless, the osteogenic differentiation, estimated by the intensity of fluorescence of collagen I in cells grown in a differentiation medium, was the highest on s6 samples. On s5 samples, coated with homogeneous TiO2 films, both cell numbers and intensity of fluorescence of collagen I was relatively high. The bone matrix mineralization, evaluated by Alizarin Red staining, was the highest on s5 samples in standard culture medium, and similar on all tested samples in differentiation medium. Thus, the surface modification of s5 samples could be considered the most suitable for application in bone implants.
