Design of settlement structure of contemporary city in historical context.
Macholánová, Petra ; Obrtlík,, Jan (referee) ; Májek, Jan (advisor)
The diploma thesis deals with an urban study on the territory of Červený kopec, specifically in the part of the territory of Stráň. It is a locality stated as a brownfield Kohnova cihelna. The proposal aims to make the most of the potential of this site, which lies in its proximity to the city center, the neighborhood of the national natural monument, a significant area of greenery and the views that this place provides due to its topographic situation. A new city district is proposed on the area of 18 hectares, which would cover one of the "brownfield holes" on the map of the city of Brno and at the same time help against the outflow of population to the outskirts of the city and against the creation of urban satellites. Numerous public opinion polls show that they would like to live close to the city, but at the same time especially young families long for their own house in a quiet countryside location. Therefore, a compact development of terraced houses, terrace villas and blocks of flats with private courtyards is proposed here, complemented by quality public space and civic amenities. This new city district would offer housing for about 3,500 new residents.

The design of housing complex uses a slightly rising terrain. In the areas where the terrain rises almost steeply is not design any building, because there would be a problem with the traffic transportation. Urban solution is a bit simple. Communication passes through the center of area and serves as a residential street with a visual axis on the steeply rising terrain. The proposed development is offset from existing homes on the street pasture. The urban solution designs terraced houses which is similar as in street Hlouskova and they are oriented north-south side. Two types of terraced houses, various widths and lengths, together form an interesting complex that does not look monotonously and endlessly. On the other site there are apartment buildings. Their ground plan is almost square and location is influenced by the shape of the area with the rising terrain along the alley. Apartment buildings include a parking garage accessible from the road. The concept of a terraced house is based on the intermediate atrium that provides contact between street, house and garden and is becoming the center of the house. Entry is through an open parking space on the street. The visual axis continues atrium to the garden. Apartment building uses an east-west orientation. The house is divided into eastern and western part. The eastern part is about half floor lower which uses a gradually rising terrain. On each landing is its own entry into the apartment thanks to this spatial arrangement. The house has 6 apartments, each apartment has a loggia that provides contact with the outside. The staircase is located in the middle of the house, the last flight of stairs leads to the walkable part of the roof, where there is a terrace with vegetation. Terrace is oriented to the west and it serves to entire apartment building.

This blueprint respects and derives benefit from the steep land, smoothly dividing two different worlds – the city and the landscape. The lenghtwise mass, presenting terraced estate, closes the gardens of current houses on Pastviny street. It creates imaginary entry into a free landscape. There are detached houses ascending freely towards the woods. They are rotated in the line with centerlines, which are made by current build-up area. The whole concept of terraced houses is based on the motif of bay, which also appears in apartment blocks. It is inserted in the space between houses, therefore there is a view from the first floors into the garden through a glassed-in dining room. The contact among the street, house and garden is made. The complex consists of six detached apartment blocks with fifty five flats and shared underground parking lot. Apartment blocks are divided into two hives, counting three blocks each. Almost every flat has at least one private outdoor space – front garden, loggia or terrace. The main idea behind this blueprint is the turning of the entry doors towards the common outdoor area, where people could meet. All the blocks could interact with each other thanks to this area. Loggias, bow-windows and terraces placed vertically on exterior of the blocks allow the view of surrounding landscape. These components appear couple of times in this complex and they make the whole mass more plastic. They enliven it. The surrounding of the apartment blocks is filled with green vegetation. The green vegetation and front gardens concur.
