Postmodern Themes and Strategies in The French Lieutenant's Woman

The thesis focuses on postmodern themes and strategies employed in The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles. The aim of this work is to discuss the postmodern themes and strategies, analyse these elements in the novel, and show what constitutes The French Lieutenant's Woman as a work of historiographic metafiction. The thesis also aims to show the main differences between the traditional nineteenth-century realist fiction and the innovative postmodern genre of historiographic metafiction.

The Origins of the Psychological Prose of Václav Řezáč

In my diploma thesis Beginning of Psychological Prose in Václav Řezáč's Work I go after developement psychological motives and themes in work one of the unique czech writers. I also concern for procedure, which is typical for psychological prose. In my diploma thesis I am interested only in a 1928 - 1940 period, when Řezač started writing his first short stories and lately focused on writing novels (Větrná setba 1935, Slepá ulička 1938, Černé světlo 1940). Černé světlo has assured him the forefront position in czech psychological prose. Summary of developement Rezáč's prose in a 1928 - 1940 period I mention in Conclusion. Psychological elements occur already in Řezáč's first short stories. His novel Větrná setba (1935) deals with a protagonist, the adolescent boy, who sinks into moral decline during the First World War. Novel takés advantage of psychological themes such as Oidipus complex, conflict of thought and acts. The protagonist does not like himself. Větrná setba draws on Šrámek's novel Stříbrný vítr (1910). Slepá ulička (1938) is sociál novel with psychological elements. For the first time author works with many storylines, lyric style gives way to epic style. Turkish Love in Germany. Intercultural Conflicts in the Form of the Novel and Film

The topic of dissertation is the view and the understanding of term ?love? in Turkish-German coexistence. The dissertation is divided into two main sections. The first one contains general information about life of Turks in Germany. The history-overview of migration to Germany precedes this description. In the theoretical section there is also described the meaning of intercultural life, intercultural literature and intercultural movie. This section is based especially on the studied literature. The second section of dissertation includes analysis of literature work and movie from the view of characters-characteristic and their understanding of term ?love?. Also we can find here the description, how each character copes with the feeling ?to be in love?. The goal of the dissertation is to show intercultural life in the context of the basic human feeling?in the context of love.

The One and the Other Side in the Novel by Alfred Kubin

This diploma work occupies itself with the novel Die andere Seite by the writer and illustrator Alfred Kubin. The work consists of two separate parts. In the theoretical part, the author?s biography and individual literary movements of the end of the 19th century are dealt with. In the practical part, the attention is given to the interpretation of the characteristics of fictitious worlds in which the plot of the novel is set. At the same time the functions and roles of individual persons, places, and motifs of the novel are explained. The work is complemented by a short analysis of the illustrations with which the author himself provided the book. The goal is to analyse both the literary as well as the graphical depiction of fantastic realities of the novel. Another aim of the work is to reveal possibilities of the interpretation of the novel?s title.

In the thesis "Spanish American Novel of Dictator: Roa Bastos and Vargas Llosa" we attempted to investigate two concrete representatives of the genre of the novel of dictator, Augusto Roa Basotos' "Yo el Supremo" and Mario Vargas Llosa's "La Fiesta del Chivo", and to present the thematic and narrative elements common to the literary works of the genre of the novel of dictator.

Czech translations of the Stranger by A. Camus

The purpose of this paper is to carry out a detailed analysis of two existing translations into Czech of Camus's novel l'Etranger (The Stranger). The first translation by Svatopluk Kadlec was published in 1947, the newer one, by Miloslav Žilina, was first published in 1966. The position of Albert Camus among French authors is not easy to define. Although he was a recognized author, he never ceased to be a stranger among them, as he was of Algerian origin and clearly preferred his native country to France. At the same time, he could never see himself as a genuine Algerian because he was a part of the French minority having power over Algeria at the time. Camus's life is full of such contradictions. For instance, he was said to be a follower of the philosophy of existentialism, embodied by Jean-Paul Sartre, although he was rather trying to oppose this labelling. He thought of himself as an advocate of left-wing ideals he had defended by participating in the Anti-Nazi resistance but refused to accept the revolutionary principle promoted by Sartre. Many of the left-wing intellectuals were also surprised by his equivocal attitude to the Algerian war. Russian picaresque novel

One of the types of the novel genre is a picaresque novel which became very fashionable in Europe at the end of the 16th century. This form originated in Spain from where it spread to other European countries. Due to different developement in Russian literature, novel and thus also the picaresque novel appeared later. However, some picaresque features can be found in the "stories from life" from the 17ili century. Novel, which started to be developed in Russia at the beginning of the 19th century and reached its peak already in the middle of this century, is influenced by the traditional Russian genres (stories from life, chozenija, hagiography), a branch of moral-picaresque literature and also by the novel Gil Blas written by the French novelist and playwright Alain-Rene Lesage. The most important work of 'Gil-Blas-like' type is the Russian Gil Blas written by Vasilij Trofimovich Narezny who was inspired by the French novel. Picaresque novel was also reflected in the work of Faddei Venediktovich Bulgarin whose scandalous novel Ivan Vyzighin started a heated debate about trash literature that was joined also by Pushkin. Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice in three Czech translations

This is a theoretical and empirical work. It principally encompasses an analysis, description and comparison ofthree translations of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice, by František Noska (1946), Božena Šimková (1949) and Eva Kondrysová (1967). The introduction briefly sets out the reasons for the selection of the theme and outlines the goal of the work. The work also concentrates on the circumstances surrounding the emergence of Pride and Prejudice and the reception given to Jane Austen' s novel. Particular attention is paid to the periodical context and the related changing critical responses to, and views on, the value of Jane Austen's literary work in an Anglo-Saxon and Czech environment. The work inter alia strives to identity how the Czech reception differs from the Anglo-Saxon one, and what features are specific to the Czech reception. Jane Austen' s work i s pro ven to ha ve attracted incomparably less attention in the Czech cultural sphere than in the Anglo-Saxon milieu, primarily for cultural and political reasons. Henrik Tikkanen (1924 - 1984) and Christer Kih1man (bom 1930) are so called Fin1and-Swedish writers: they belong to the Swedish minority in Fin1and and they both write in Swedish. In genera1 they are viewed as authors who describe - and often go into rather intimate detail s - the "Fin1and-Swedish decadent upper c1ass". In the autumn 1975 Tikkanen pub1ished his autobiographica1 text Brandovagen 8 Brando Tel. 35 and Kih1man brought out his novel called Dyre prins. Both of the books are reviewed in the main Fin1and-Swedish newspapers and subsequently they provoke some discussions, whi1st the 1argest po1emics is risen in the beginning of 1976 by the te1evision appearence ofboth writers. Antonio Lobo Antunes (1942) is not only a writer who, in a very personal way, depicts contemporary Portuguese society: he is also an artist who cares about the aesthetic value of his works refining permanently his tools in view of transforming the art of the novel. We decided thus to reflect on the creative process in Lobo Antunes' works giving a more accurate definition of their generic features. The writer himself opened a way for us to reflect, having entitled some of his works by an explicit generic or parageneric reference: An Explanation of the Birds (1981), Act of the Damned (1985), Treatise of the sours Passions (1990), The Inquisitors' Manual (1996) and Don't Go So Fast Into That Dark Night (2000), referred to as a poem. The starting point and the basic methodological tool of our analyses is Genette's theory of the paratext and the so-called generic modulation, which is based on genre theories developed by J. M. Schaeffer, Aguiar e Silva, Fowler, Genette and Reis. These tools allow us to explore not only the semantic link between a title (or a generic indication) and a literary text, but also the signs of the architextual, generic and discoursive layers.
