The use of deminutives in English translations of fairy tales by Karel and Josef Čapek.

The topic of this bachelor thesis is the occurrence of diminutives in English translations of selected fairy tales by Karel Čapek. The subject of examination is the occurrence and function of diminutives in selected authorial fairy tales and their English translations. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part, the author defines the term diminutive, explains the functional usage of diminutives in Czech as well as their formation by diminutive suffixes, and summarizes the basics of translation theory. The author also compares and explains the language processes of word formation of diminutives in English. The main purpose of the practical part is a comparative analysis of the use of diminutives, their frequency, reasons for their occurrence and their translation equivalents in authorial fairy tales and their English translations.

Trinominal compounds in French

The subject of the diploma thesis is a characteristic of the French N+N+N compounds of the type "relations parents-enfants" with the use of existing typology for other languages, mainly for Italian. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part defines the concepts of composition and composite, their distribution based on different criteria. They described graphic, morphological, syntactic, and semantic properties of compounds. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the practical research in the corpus and subsequent analysis of the acquired data. The last part contains a draft classification of French relational compounds.

Peripheral Old Czech names for Owls

This paper focuses on the interpretation of the Old Czech peripheral ornithonyms vap, vapek a puňek. Based on an analysis of the context for the evidence, and with the help of more recent sources and an analysis of the morphological structure, several findings have been made: a) the Old Czech vap is a deverbative formed from the Croatian vapiti, which provides further proof of contact between the two languages during the Middle Ages, b) the formant -ek performs a complex function in the names of animals, as it may simultaneously carry a diminutive and an agentive meaning, while including the information that the word is the name of an animal, c) the distribution of the names of animals was loose in earlier times, with one term frequently relating to several referents, whereas one animal commonly bore several names.

Linguistic levels of speech of the computer games players

This master thesis extends the main topic of the bachelor thesis Speech of the Computer Games Players (also by Eliška Schönbauerová) and it will further research a new type of sociolect; the speech of computer games players. This sociolect has been researched just on the basic level, and so the author seeks to focus on other, yet unexplored linguistic levels of said sociolect: morphology, word-formation, phonetics, lexicology, syntax and stylistics. The goal is to deeply explore and research gamers' sociolect and to better understand the process of adapting Anglicisms in the system of contemporary Czech language. The theoretical part is based on available professional literature. This thesis also contains materials gathered by the author from gamers or they are available online.

The bachelor thesis focuses on reduplications in German language and its Czech language equivalents. The thesis is divided into theoretical part and practical part. The theoretical part describes general definition of word formation, traditional and non-traditional word formation types, the concept of reduplication and its classification. The practical part focuses on reduplication in German language and specific Czech language equivalents with meanings. Reduplications are more specifically described in each subchapter, which are demonstrated from German press examples.

Linguistic analysis of names of herbs in English and Spanish

The subject of this Bachelor's Thesis is a linguistic analysis of the names of herbs in Czech and Spanish. It's focused on the word-forming methods and the motivation of creating these naming units. It provides the reader with a presentation of many common names of several herbs, in which are express various features, using a metaphor. These were also created by using various word-forming methods. This thesis is composed of two main parts. In the theoretical part there is described the process of formation of new naming units and each of the word-forming methods, which both of the languages have. The second and analytical part is focused on the analysis of concrete common names of herbs. The goal of the study is to create a sufficient sample of these names, in order to observe certain tendencies and probabilities in the formation of new names of the herbs and also differences in these processes in both of these languages.

Prefixation in Contemporary Spanish

This diploma thesis takes a comprehensive look at the matter of prefixation in contemporary Spanish and it is therefore divided into two parts. In the first one, we occupy ourselves with the area of constructional morphology and tackle theoretical matters. From the more general topics of word formation we then proceed to prefixation itself which we then attempt to define and describe in more detail. We outline the issues of concept delimitations, definition of prefixation, classification of prefixes and other controversial matters related to this process in the Spanish language. The second part of the thesis is of a more practical nature. There, we focus on the semantic meanings (locative and gradative) some prefixes may acquire. We then concentrate on specific prefixes (entre-, inter-, sobre-, super-), their distribution among word classes, and finally, using InterCorp, a parallel language corpus, we study Czech equivalents of selected elements.

Composition in contemporary Spanish

The diploma thesis "Composition in contemporary Spanish " focuses on compounding as one of the most important processes in word formation. The purpose of our thesis on level of theoretical linguistics is to provide clear typology of Spanish compound words. On level of linguistics research our objective is to analyze current development of Spanish compound words. In theoretical part of our work we defined compounding together with derivation and parasynthesis as main word-formation processes that contribute to the growth of Spanish lexicon. Apart from these processes we also defined other important terms connected to this topic and essential for good understanding of it as lexical base, morpheme, word formation rules and their restrictions, pruductivity or blocking. We decided to classify Spanish compound words according to their orthographic character into two main groups - ortographic and syntagmatic compounds. In addition we subdivided these two groups; ortographic compounds were classified according to word class of the final compound, syntagmatic compounds were classified according to their internal structure. Neology in contemporary French

This master thesis is dealing with the preference of certain categorical structures (VN compounds, nominal syntagmas N de N, N à N and their English equivalent) to denotate a new referent. Its aim is to describe current trends of denominative instrumental neology. The thesis is dividend into two parts: teoretical and practical. Theoretical part provides a brief characteristics of the concerned fields: neology, neologism, compounding, nominal syntagmas and productivity. Practical part includes survey and compares its results with corpus analyses and data obtained from Google browser.
