Psychological principles in techniques of social engineering

Social engineering is type of attack, usable against an organization or individual. It focuses on weaknesses of human factor. In recent times, characterized by anonymity, fast pace and focus on technologies presents this way of attack a dangerous threat. Human factor tends to be underestimated in defense, into which organizations invest large amounts of money. Even though social engineering has been written about many times, most of work has been focused more on technical part, and explaining techniques of social engineering has been left out. The goal of this paper is explaining these techniques from psychological point of view, and using that as a basis for defense for organizations, threaten by social engineering attack. In first part, this work describes two main themes -- social engineering and social psychology. Afterwards, it describes principles, which are used in social engineering attack, and ways in which social engineering uses them. In second part are these information used to analyze several practical examples of social engineering attack. Then, they are used to formulate practical advices to defend against social engineering attack.

The VIII th “Social Processes and Personality” conference was devoted to the memory of Prof. Liduška Osecká, the eminent methodologist within the Czech and Slovak psychology and the former director (1993-1999) of the Institute of Psychology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, who would reached her 60th September 6, 2005. Within the traditional topic of the conference - basic and applied research in personality and social psychology - the conference’s main theme was the research methodology in psychology. Seventy-eight contributions (35 oral presentations and 43 posters) were presented at the conference, their substantial part is included in this conference anthology.

Department of social science. Head of bachelor thesis: PhDr. Miloslava Hiršová Ph.D. The bachelor thesis deals with the possibilities of use psychological knowledge during entrance procedure. On the basis of statements of selected personnels the identified options are compared with practice. The thesis is divided into two parts. The process of an entrance procedure, creating the first impression and non-verbal communication are described in the theoretical part. The summary of theoretical knowledge is at the end of this section. In the practical part the theoretical knowledge is applied to the selected personnel clerks in personnel department. The questionnaires are personnel professionals who deal with recruitment.
