Adaptations of the novel The Hound of Baskervilles: The triumph of the television serie's sociopath

This thesis focuses on the various adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyles novel The Hound of the Baskerville and accentuate the episode The Hounds of Baskervilles from the BBC TV series Sherlock. Thus, this thesis is decribing the theme, which was not fully covered in Czech literature. The author used different sources, books, internet pages and cinematographic pieces. The thesis consists of two parts. In the first part the author is focusing on the theory of adaptation, Doyle's life and art, The Hound of the Baskervilles book and the TV series Sherlock. In the practical part the author narrates about the episode The Hounds of the Baskervilles and searching for definition of the adaptation process, which the makers of this episode used. This part also answers the question, why is this episode so popular and key for the whole series. The crucial final part of the thesis summarizes the main principles, which authors and film makers can use during the process of the adaptation. Story building in serial format focusing on the Chernobyl miniseries

This diploma theses titled Story building in serial format focusing on the Chernobyl miniseries analyses the serial Chernobyl coproduced by American HBO and British Sky aired in 2019. Chernobyl miniseries gained public recognition and still ranks as one of the highest-rated TV shows in history according to movie databases in the Czech Republic and abroad. It also received wide media coverage from different newspapers and movie servers. The miniseries has five episodes it describes primarily the human aspect of a horrifying disaster in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986. The main aim of this theses is content and dramaturgy analysis, description, and development of individual characters and themes. This diploma thesis also focuses on the story building of a serial in terms of theoretical concepts and aspects typical for making serials and series. Moreover, the thesis mentions particular Czech and international reviews of Chernobyl.

Differences in the perception of female characters in various media versions of The Witcher

The subject of this diploma thesis is the perception of female characters in various media adaptations of The Witcher from the perspective of audiences that show signs of fan affiliation. The research focuses on the two most recent adaptations, i.e. the third game The Witcher: Wild Hunt and the serie The Witcher on the Netflix platform. The research took the form of in-depth interviews with a total of nine participants and focused on the role, characteristics, relationships and motivations of female characters in order to find out how respondents perceive these areas in adaptations. The first part of the diploma thesis deals with the theoretical basis related to popular culture, audiences, game and film studies and gender in media. It also presents the world of The Witcher, the selected characters and the critique of adaptations. The next section of the thesis deals with the research methodology. The grounded theory was used as a method of work and multiple levels of coding and categorization were conducted. These categories are then presented in the empirical part of the thesis together with a demonstration of the respondents' statements followed by data interpretation and discussion. The subject of the bachelor thesis "Serial, today's phenomenon" is the analysis and description of serials broadcast in prime time. In the first part the thesis defines the concept of prime time. The changes in broadcast formats over the years are described at the end of this chapter. The next chapter defines the serial production in Czech republic, Europe and in America. The thesis describes the serials broadcast in prime time during 2019 in the third chapter. It briefly introduces some broadcast serials, which are divided by types, and mentions all the serials that were broadcast. In the last chapter there is an analysis of broadcast serials.

Most! series and its impact on the czech TV drama and media

This diploma theses deals with the Most! series presented by the Czech television in 2019. The purpose of this theses was to find out how the Most! series distinguished from standard Czech series production. In the theoretical part of this theses the Most! series has been put in the Czech series context and concrete distinctions have been investigated. It has been found out, that the most important distinctions have lain in characters, creatively used filming locations and the main theme. Also it has been found out that the Most! series can be considered quality TV so it was endowed with higher quality than other Czech series. Practical part of the theses has been divided into two parts. The purpose of the first part has been to investigate the media reflection of the series using quantitative methods of research. Alongside this research another quantitative analysis of the Czech series Policie Modrava has been made to gain data to comparision. It has been found out that the Most! media reflection contained more published articles from wider media spectrum and it differed mainly in topics and journalistic genres. The Concept of Family in the Czech Society and its Media Image in "Ulice" TV Show: Similarities and Differences

This diploma thesis focuses on the concept of family in Czech society and on the media image in the series "Ulice". The aim of this thesis is to find the two concepts, then compare and contrast them. The research is qualitative, the used methods are content analysis and in-depth interview. The thesis begins with a theoretical part, where topics related to media constructions of reality, series "Ulice" and Czech family are explained. The theoretical part sets grounds for creating hypotheses. In the practical part, the last completed series of the series "Ulice" is analysed. The content of the viewed episodes is analysed using content analysis, followed by a verification of the hypotheses based on the theoretical part. A media image of family in the series "Ulice" is created based on the results of the content analysis. Subsequently, in-depth interviews are conducted with five Czech families, who are chosen intentionally. The concept of the Czech family in society is compiled based on the data from those interviews. Media image of the Most! series in selected Czech media

This bachelor's thesis deals with the media image of the television series Most! It is one of the most successful projects of Czech Television in terms of the number of viewers and the media interest in the series was great. The series was exceptional not only for its viewership but mainly for the topics it presented, such as xenophobia, racism, and gender issues. The story takes place in the North Bohemian town of Most. This thesis will briefly introduce the series itself, its plot, creators, and actors. However, the main part of the thesis consists of quantitative and qualitative content analysis of selected media. The aim of quantitative content analysis is to obtain data on how often and to what extent media wrote about the series, what topics the media most often addressed in connection to the series, and so on. The aim of qualitative content analysis is to analyze selected texts in more detail. Part of the work is also the statement of the creator of the series.

The bachelor's thesis Comparison of the original sound and Czech dubbing in the TV series Friends deals with the analysis of differences in the original sound and in the dubbing of the American TV series Friends. The Friends series is an American sitcom that aired on NBC from September 22, 1994 to May 6, 2004. The series focuses on the lives of six friends between the ages of 20 and 30 who live in Manhattan, New York City. During the ten years of broadcasting, the show received many awards and became one of the most popular television shows in history. The series has thus become a phenomenon that still affects and entertains viewers around the world. In the Czech Republic, a dubbed version of the TV show began broadcasting on Ceska televize in 1996. The Czech dubbing of the series was directed by Ales Sobotka, led by the creative group of Alena Polednakova and Vladimir Tisnovsky. There are many arguments for and against dubbing or subtitling TV shows. What determines dubbing or subtitling, as the main method of television translation in a country, is influenced by a complex number of factors, such as price, availability of relevant technology, literacy level etc. The overall meaning and context may therefore be quite different from the original version if the translation is dubbed or subtitled. This study focuses on the analysis of the media image of journalists and editorial work in Czech serials filmed after 2000. Through qualitative narrative analysis it aims to interpret the depiction of editorial characters and stereotypes that these characters bring. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the reader is acquainted with the problems of several thematic areas. There are defined basic concepts to understand the topic, especially concepts of construction of reality and media representation. The theoretical part also defines the journalistic profession and the genre of the series. The practical part analyzes how selected samples represent the profession of journalist. The series examined are Dokonalý svět (TV Nova, 2010), Reportérka (ČT, 2015) and Redakce (TV Nova, 2004). The work examines how these series reflect the work of the editor, the hierarchy and functioning of the editorial office, journalistic procedures, gender and the lifestyle of journalists.
