Odeon Publishing House: Current Profile and Media Image
Blažek, Radek ; Halada, Jan (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
1 Abstract The main goal of this bachelor's thesis is to present Odeon, an important Czech publishing house. The first chapter covers the history of Odeon since its founding in the 1920s by Jan Fromek during a renaissance in the communist era to the problematic privatisation in the 1990s. The first chapter ends in 1999 when Bertelsmann bought Odeon's trademark. The next chapter describes Odeon in its current state. Nowadays Odeon publishes many different book genres; senior editor Jindřich Jůzl chracterises it as literary fiction. I present all four editions of Odeon: Světová knihovna (World's Library), Nobelova cena (Nobel's Prize), Česká řada (Czech Edition) and Knihovna klasiků (Classics Library) including various prominent writers and important books that Odeon holds the rights to. A description of marketing and public relations is also included. A discussion of literary reviews and readers' praise for the books of Odeon makes up most of the third chapter. Reception was usually positive and complimentary of Odeon's quality. The last chapter looks into the Czech book market, Odeon's position in Euromedia Group and I compare Odeon with its main competitors which according to Jindřich Jůzl are Argo, Host, Paseka, Kniha Zlín and Mladá fronta publishing houses. In this thesis I learned that Odeon is a...

Bír Šawíš, Malá Oáza: Ostraka a další nápisový materiál
Dospěl, Marek ; Bárta, Miroslav (advisor) ; Ast, Rodney (referee) ; Coppens, Filip (referee)
MAREK DOSPĚL Bīr Shawīsh, Small Oasis: Ostraka and Other Inscribed Material ABSTRACT The present dissertation is primarily a publication of a group of primary sources. These sources come from the recent archaeological exploration by Charles University in Prague of the site of Bīr Shawīsh in the Baḥrīya Oasis ("Small Oasis" in Classical Antiquity) in Egypt's Western Desert and consist of inscribed material written in Hellenistic Greek or koinē. Their majority belongs in the family of documentary texts, while a smaller group consists of informal inscriptions. Both texts and inscriptions are written or incised on fired potter's clay supports and can be dated to around 400 CE. The core of this dissertation consists of an annotated edition of these texts and inscriptions (Chapter 3), immediately followed by a synthetic and interpretative Chapter 4 in which the cardinal issues inherent to the published material are treated in detail. An important part of the edition are the analytical indices and appendices. Chapter 1 serves as a general introduction to the work; Chapter 2 presents the historical and archaeological context of the edited inscribed material. The dissertation ends with Reference Bibliography and Plates of individual text-bearing artifacts. This work is the first comprehensive treatment of a group of...
Critical Edition of Selected Christmas Songs of V. K. Holan Rovenský
Böhmová, Veronika ; Andrlová Fidlerová, Alena (advisor) ; Martínek, František (referee)
The thesis proposes a commented critical edition of five songs from the Christmas part of the Capella regia musicalis hymnal (Knihopis 1458), edited by Karel Holan Rovenský and published by Jiří Laboun the elder. The attempt to apply interdisciplinary linguistic-musicological approach results in an outcome that reflects the relation between language and music. However, the main focus of the thesis lies in the language characterization of the edited texts. Its main goal is to contribute to the scientific research of the baroque language in hymnography production and to make the songs accessible to the general public.
The image of war and militarism in the 16th - 17 century through the eyes of Czech nobles
Opavová, Tereza ; Šedivá Koldinská, Marie (advisor) ; Holý, Martin (referee)
The main subject of the diploma thesis is the view of the war and the military through the early modern opinions of lower nobles, especially by Henry Hýzrl from the Chod (1575- 1665) and Sigmund Chotek of Chotkov (1521-1603). The time frame is set from the 16. to 17. century. Views on contemporary defence of the country are reconstructed on the basis of previously unreleased military debate which is titled Kriegsdiscurs über der hochlöblichen Cron Bohemia Landtdefension by Henry Hýzrl from the Chod. This debate is partly accessible in academic edition at the end of the thesis. The next source, for understanding the intellectual world of the Czech nobility during the wars with the Turks, is military instruction by Sigmund Chotek of Chotkov. The work is based on military debate by Henry Hýzrl from Chod. It is a completely unique view of the war through the view of the Bohemian nobleman.

The Profile of Contemporary Publisher:HOST
Lukášová, Barbora ; Halada, Jan (advisor) ; Čeňková, Jana (referee)
In this thesis I try to outline running and production of the contemporary publishing house Host. The publishing house Host was established in 1990s' but the magazine Host, whose legacy the publishing house carries, has been working for several decades. The publishing house Host and the magazine Host have been coexisting simultaneously and shared almost the same editorial team. For that reason it is not quite possible to separate one from the other. In the first part of this thesis I introduce the initial existential period of the magazine Host from 1920s' to its samizdat publication in 1980s'. In the next part I try to ouline the beginning of the publishing house Host leaded by Dušan Skála in early 1990s'. The current shape of the publishing house and the magazine has been formed since the second half of 1990s' under the leadership of Tomáš Reichel and Miroslav Balaštík. In the main part of my thesis I try to describe the contemporary work of the publishing house Host which I make mostly through its book production. I also try to point out the transformation of the publishing house Host from a narrowly focused publishing house to a publishing house whose production can excite even a mass readerʼs interests. The aim of my thesis is primarily to introduce comprehensive description of publishing...
Bedrich Smetana's Diaries.
Mojžíšová, Olga ; Ottlová, Marta (advisor) ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (referee) ; Jakubcová, Alena (referee)
Deníky Bedřicha Smetany představují rozsahem i výpovědní hodnotou unikátní pramenný soubor.
